1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMake the consent state repeatable, capture the page at the checkpoint you actually want to test, and compare that screenshot with a saved baseline. If the banner is part of the experience you need to verify, capture it; if you only want to compare the page behind it, dismiss it through the normal UI or exclude only its region—and keep a separate check for the banner when its behavior matters.
Decide what the screenshot should verify
A visual regression test compares a screenshot at a chosen checkpoint with a stored baseline. The first decision is not how to hide a banner, but which state the test must cover.
- Banner-present state: Check its placement, text, controls, and effect on page layout. Make the initial consent state consistent between runs.
- Post-consent page: Dismiss the banner using its ordinary consent or close control before capturing. This gives a repeatable view of the page after consent, but does not assess the banner in that checkpoint.
- Both: Use separate checkpoints or assertions: one for the banner and another for the page after dismissal. This avoids reducing noise in the page comparison by losing coverage of the banner.
Playwright’s guidance for predictable overlays favors waiting for the overlay and handling it through normal interaction when that is the intended state. Playwright Page API documentation.
Make the consent state repeatable
- Set up a known starting state. Ensure the test begins with the consent state appropriate to the checkpoint. If the banner-present state is under test, start without a prior dismissal. If testing the post-consent page, start in a state where the banner appears so the test can dismiss it deliberately.
- Wait for the banner when expected. Do not capture while it is still loading or while the page is in an accidental intermediate state.
- Use the intended UI action. Click the normal accept, reject, or dismiss control that matches the test scenario. Avoid relying on a generic overlay handler as the only setup for a predictable banner.
- Capture at the checkpoint. Keep the consent decision and capture timing consistent across runs.
The exact control and setup depend on the site being tested; use the same meaningful consent choice that the test is designed to represent, rather than treating every banner dismissal as interchangeable.
Choose capture scope and comparison method
Capture only the area that corresponds to the question being tested: the viewport for the visible state, the full page for long-page coverage, or a specific region for a focused comparison. A screenshot comparison is useful only when its scope matches the intended coverage.

- Compare the banner: Keep it visible and compare its region or the full viewport, depending on whether its effect on surrounding layout matters.
- Compare the underlying page: Dismiss the banner before capture where possible. If it varies in a way irrelevant to this specific comparison, narrowly mask its region or temporarily adjust the screenshot with CSS.
- Review changes against the baseline: Inspect detected differences before accepting a new baseline. Accept only intentional changes; preserve the existing baseline when a difference indicates a defect.
Percy documents selector-based and coordinate-based ignore regions, as well as temporary screenshot CSS, for Playwright captures: Percy Playwright documentation. Applitools explains that ignored regions are excluded from visual assessment: Applitools ignore regions. Because ignored pixels are not assessed in that comparison, keep the mask as small as practical and do not use it to conceal changes that matter.
When to dismiss, capture, mask, or adjust CSS
| Approach | Use it when | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Dismiss before capture | The target is the post-consent page and banner behavior is covered elsewhere. | Creates a stable post-consent view, but that screenshot does not assess the banner. |
| Capture the banner-present state | Appearance, placement, copy, controls, or layout impact are under test. | Tests the banner directly, but requires a consistent initial consent state. |
| Mask only the banner region | The banner varies and is irrelevant to one underlying-page comparison. | Changes inside the masked region are invisible to that comparison. |
| Use temporary screenshot CSS | The capture setup supports CSS adjustments and a consistent view is needed. | The selector and styling must not alter page areas the test is meant to assess. |
Applitools describes viewport, full-page, and region capture options in its visual AI options documentation. Choose the scope based on what a regression would mean for the reader or user, not simply the largest available screenshot.

Review diffs without hiding regressions
Visual comparison reports differences; it does not decide whether they are defects. Review the changed areas and ask whether the difference is intended, whether it affects the state under test, and whether an ignored region is still justified. Accept a changed baseline only for a change you mean to keep. If the difference is a regression, fix the page or test setup and retain the prior baseline. Applitools outlines baseline review and acceptance in its visual testing overview.

ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL with one GET request and return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Its response reports the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and other MCP clients.

Troubleshooting inconsistent captures
- The banner appears in some runs but not others: The starting consent state is not consistent. Set up the intended initial state and wait for the banner before capturing or interacting with it.
- The screenshot catches a banner animation or incomplete page: Capture only after the expected UI state is ready. A premature screenshot can create differences unrelated to a visual change in the page.
- The underlying-page comparison still has noisy diffs: Prefer explicit dismissal when that matches the intended post-consent state. Otherwise, narrow the ignored region or adjust only the screenshot; confirm that the chosen treatment does not change the areas under test.
- A meaningful banner change is not detected: The banner may be masked or hidden in the checkpoint. Add a banner-present capture or assertion and compare that state separately.
- A baseline update would erase a real issue: Do not accept it automatically. Review the differences, correct the defect or setup, and retain the prior baseline until the change is intentional.
