Use three signals together: a controlled screenshot capture, a visual image diff, and OCR text plus bounding-box comparisons. Pixel differences show where rendering changed; OCR identifies added, missing, or edited text; OCR geometry helps reveal text that moved or changed size. Review the results against an approved baseline rather than treating every difference as a regression.
Build a repeatable screenshot comparison
A comparison is useful only if capture noise is kept separate from real page changes. Browser screenshots can vary with the host operating system, browser version and settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Use the same capture environment as the baseline wherever practical.

Fix the capture conditions
- Pin the browser version and CI image or operating system; keep device scale and viewport dimensions fixed.
- Use consistent fonts and page state. Wait for fonts and dynamic content to settle before capture.
- Decide whether the comparison covers the viewport or the full page, and keep that choice consistent.
- Remove or mask irrelevant volatility such as timestamps, rotating ads, and animations. Playwright supports a screenshot stylesheet for hiding or changing page elements during capture.
Create and maintain the baseline
With Playwright Test screenshot assertions, the first run can create a reference screenshot; later runs compare against it. Commit reviewed reference images with the tests. A baseline update approves a new expected appearance—it does not establish that the appearance is correct—so inspect changes before accepting them.
Use pixels and OCR for different questions
Run an image comparison and OCR on both the baseline and current capture. A visual diff answers “where did the image change?” OCR answers “what text changed?” and OCR coordinates help answer “where did this text move?” Combining them is more informative than relying on either alone.

Visual comparison
Playwright screenshot assertions provide pixel-based comparison controls, including a perceptual pixel threshold and optional maximum-difference pixel limits. Tune them against representative captures from your own environment, and retain the generated diff for review. Raising tolerance too far can conceal small genuine changes; lowering it too far can flag rendering noise.
Text comparison
Run OCR against both images, then compare recognized strings by region or reading order. Report additions, deletions, and edits. Normalize only differences that are irrelevant to your checks: for example, whitespace can be normalized for text comparison if geometry is being checked separately. Keep confidence values and link each reported text change to the corresponding image crop, because an OCR mistake can resemble a real copy change.
Geometry comparison
Preserve OCR word, line, or block bounding boxes rather than keeping only extracted text. Match corresponding regions and compare their positions and dimensions. Tesseract TSV includes word coordinates, confidence, and text; hOCR can encode bounding boxes and confidence. Google Cloud Vision can return bounding boxes and page, block, paragraph, word, and break structure. These outputs let a test flag text that stayed the same but shifted, wrapped differently, or changed size.

Compare coordinates only when screenshot dimensions and scaling match, or normalize coordinates against image width and height. Otherwise, a change in capture size can make unchanged text appear to have moved.
Implement the comparison and review loop
- Capture: take baseline and current screenshots under the same browser, viewport, scale, and settled page state.
- Filter known noise: hide, mask, or style out regions that are intentionally volatile. Keep the excluded areas narrow so real regressions remain visible.
- Diff images: run the screenshot assertion or image-diff step and save its output. Calibrate thresholds using expected harmless variation and representative real changes.
- Extract OCR: process both images with the same OCR engine, output format, and segmentation approach. Preserve recognized text, confidence, and coordinates.
- Compare content and positions: identify changed strings and matched regions whose position or dimensions changed. Normalize coordinate systems before applying layout thresholds.
- Review evidence: present baseline and current images side by side with the pixel diff, text changes, confidence, and affected crops or boxes.
- Classify before updating: distinguish capture noise and OCR uncertainty from a real regression. Update the approved baseline only after a reviewer accepts the new appearance.
Choose an OCR path for the workflow
Choose based on deployment, output structure, languages and scripts, privacy, latency, cost, quotas, and the effort of operating the system. No universal winner for website-screenshot accuracy is established by the cited official documentation; test representative screenshots from your own pages before committing.

Troubleshoot common false positives and misses
Nearly every pixel changes between runs
Check whether the browser, OS or CI image, headless mode, hardware, fonts, device scale, or page state differs from the baseline environment. Stabilize those conditions and filter known volatile elements before loosening the visual threshold.

The diff flags a timestamp, ad, or animation
Mask or restyle only the known dynamic region during capture. Avoid broad masking: it can hide the layout or content change the test is meant to detect.

Inspect the crop and confidence, then verify the original image. If the detected text is low-confidence or ambiguous, classify it as needing visual review rather than automatically approving a baseline change.
OCR misses text in a small region or splits lines poorly
Use a crop-appropriate page-segmentation mode rather than assuming the default full-page mode is suitable. Check for skew and whether the screenshot provides sufficiently clear text.

Unchanged words appear to move
Confirm that both captures have identical dimensions and scale, or normalize box coordinates by image dimensions before comparing. Match corresponding words or regions rather than comparing unrelated OCR boxes by their raw order alone.
The threshold hides a real small change
Revisit the threshold against examples of both harmless variation and meaningful changes. A permissive pixel threshold can suppress a real difference; keep OCR text and box checks as separate signals rather than expecting one pixel setting to detect every regression.
