Get the browser version from a Puppeteer Browser instance
After launching a browser, call browser.version() and await its result:

}The method returns a promise for a string representing the controlled browser’s name and version. Puppeteer’s API reference describes it as a string representing the browser’s name and version: Browser.version().

The returned string can begin with Chrome/ or HeadlessChrome/; the documented examples include Chrome/61.0.3153.0 and HeadlessChrome/61.0.3153.0. Treat the format as display information, not an unchanging contract: browser releases may change it. Avoid code that depends on an exact prefix or fixed string structure.

Which browser does Puppeteer report?
browser.version() reports the browser attached to that particular Browser object. It works with a browser Puppeteer launched and with one it connected to. The browser you get depends on your launch or connection setup, not merely on the Puppeteer package version.
Default bundled browser
Puppeteer works best with the Chrome for Testing browser it downloads by default. The bundled browser is the ordinary choice when you want Puppeteer and its browser to work together as intended.

System Chrome or a custom executable
You can select a regular Chrome installation with the channel launch option, or choose a specific executable with executablePath. Those options can cause the reported version to differ from the bundled browser’s version. Puppeteer’s documentation says it only guarantees operation with its bundled browser; see Puppeteer configuration.

Check whether the version is supported
Identifying the version and confirming compatibility are different tasks. If you need to know whether the active browser matches Puppeteer’s documented support pairing, compare it with the current Puppeteer supported browsers table for the Puppeteer release in your project.

The table changes over time. As checked for this article, it lists Puppeteer 25.12.0 with Chrome for Testing 154.0.8037.57; those are release identifiers, not a permanent pairing. Starting with Puppeteer v20.0.0, its browser downloads have been Chrome for Testing; earlier releases used Chromium. Confirm the current mapping rather than relying on an old version number.

- The version differs from the one you expected: Check the launch configuration for
executablePathorchannel. Either may select a browser other than Puppeteer’s bundled download. - You are using
puppeteer-core: SetexecutablePathorchannelin the launch options to identify which browser should be launched. - You need to check compatibility: Compare the result against the supported-browser mapping for your installed Puppeteer release. The mapping is updated and should not be treated as timeless.
- Your parser stops working after an update: Do not assume a fixed prefix or version-string syntax. Keep the raw result for diagnostics and parse only what your own use case requires.
