To detect a price change, compare the same aligned price region across screenshots when its layout and rendering are stable. If the price may gain digits or change format, use OCR to read and compare the text instead. OpenCV can locate and prepare the image region; it does not read a new price by itself.

Build a repeatable screenshot comparison
- Capture comparable pages. Use the same product page, viewport, scaling, and capture conditions when possible. Reject unreadable or failed image files rather than comparing them.
- Locate the price. If its position is fixed, use consistent coordinates. If it moves, match a stable nearby patch with OpenCV.
- Crop and align. Compare only the price area, or a small surrounding region, so unrelated changes elsewhere on the page do not dominate the result.
- Select the comparison. For stable typography and formatting, compare aligned crops and flag visual differences for review. If the string can vary in length or format, run OCR and compare parsed values.
- Normalize OCR output. Standardize whitespace, currency symbols, decimal separators, and thousands separators using the page’s known locale before parsing. Locale conventions determine whether punctuation is a decimal or grouping mark.
- Calibrate and keep evidence. Test your image and OCR thresholds against representative unchanged and changed captures. Mask known dynamic regions, and save before-and-after crops with recognized strings so ambiguous alerts can be checked.
Locate a moving price region with OpenCV
OpenCV’s template-matching tutorial describes searching for a template image within a larger image. In this workflow, the template should be a stable visual anchor near the price—not the old price itself if the digits are expected to change.

OpenCV documents six template-matching methods. For the two TM_SQDIFF methods, the lowest score is the best match; for other methods, the highest score is best. The result map has dimensions (W-w+1, H-h+1) for a source image of width W and height H, and a template of width w and height h. Use minMaxLoc to find the best or worst score as appropriate to the selected method.
For example, with TM_CCOEFF_NORMED, select the maximum result and use its location as the anchor’s top-left coordinate. Add the known offset from the anchor to the price to get the crop origin. Check that the crop stays inside the screenshot bounds. This is a localization step only; OCR or a separate image comparison is still needed to determine whether the price changed.

If the anchor can appear multiple times, do not rely on only the single best location. Threshold the result map to collect candidates, then filter duplicate or implausible positions and verify the survivors. OpenCV’s tutorial uses 0.8 as an illustrative threshold for its demonstration; it is not a validated price-change cutoff.
Compare pixels or compare recognized prices?
Aligned crop comparison
Use a pixel or image difference when the price region is consistently placed and rendered. It answers whether the crop looks different, not necessarily whether its numeric value changed. Small shifts, browser rendering changes, and antialiasing can produce differences even when the price is unchanged. A flag should trigger review or a second-stage check rather than be treated as proof.

OCR and normalized values
Use OCR when digits, currency symbols, or formatting can vary. Tesseract describes itself as an open-source text-recognition engine; its documentation says official language-model data is available for more than 100 languages and 35 scripts. Those coverage figures do not establish accuracy on your particular product screenshots. Choose appropriate language data, inspect the extracted text, normalize it according to the relevant locale, and compare parsed values only after checking that the OCR result is plausible.

If the desired alert is “the displayed region changed,” image comparison may be enough. If it is “the numeric price changed,” OCR and value parsing are the closer fit. Neither approach has a universal threshold established here; validate on your pages and retain uncertain cases for review.

Common problems and fixes
- Every capture appears different: Check that viewport, scale, crop coordinates, and alignment are consistent. Mask changing areas around the price, such as nearby badges.
- Template matching finds the wrong object: Choose a more distinctive stable anchor, constrain the search to a plausible page area, and inspect candidate locations rather than accepting the top score blindly.
- One anchor appears in several places: Threshold the result map, filter duplicate detections, and validate candidates by position or surrounding context.
- Pixel alerts fire without a price change: Rendering variation can alter pixels. Tighten the crop, calibrate against unchanged captures, or use OCR to compare the recognized value.
- OCR confuses punctuation or currency: Confirm the page locale, standardize separators and symbols accordingly, and review the crop and recognized string before parsing.
- OCR misses or misreads the price: Verify that the crop contains the complete price at readable scale and use suitable language data. Treat uncertain results as review cases rather than silently converting them into a price.
- The screenshot cannot be decoded: Check that the capture completed and the file is a valid image before passing it to OpenCV; failed or blank captures are not meaningful comparison inputs.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
Restricting work to a small price crop reduces irrelevant pixel changes and keeps the comparison focused. Template matching searches across the source image, so limiting the search area to a plausible region is useful when page structure allows it. OCR adds a separate recognition step. Measure the time and review burden on your own pages; the cited documentation does not provide a price-screenshot benchmark, error rate, or accuracy figure.
Log the capture, selected crop, match location and score, OCR string, and final decision. This makes false alerts diagnosable and lets you tune thresholds using real unchanged and changed examples. Do not treat OpenCV’s tutorial threshold as a production setting.
