To detect a price change in screenshots, extract visible text with OCR, identify the likely offer price, normalize it, and compare it with the previous observation for the same product, variant, currency, and offer conditions. OCR supplies text and often its location in the image; it does not decide which of several amounts is the current product price. Keep the original screenshot and send ambiguous cases for review.
Build a price-change detection pipeline
- Capture comparable pages. Record the product identifier and variant, page URL, locale, and capture time. Keep the capture schedule and browser conditions consistent where practical.
- Preserve the evidence. Store the original screenshot with its metadata and the raw OCR response. Retaining these makes it possible to audit a detected change or improve the extraction rules later.
- Run OCR. Submit the image to an OCR service or a suitable local engine. OCR converts visible image text into text data; for example, Google Cloud Vision returns detected text and word-level bounding boxes. Google Cloud Vision text detection documentation
- Find candidate amounts. Parse text that resembles a currency amount, then use its position and nearby words to prioritize candidates in the product title or offer area. A page may also show a crossed-out list price, subscription price, installment amount, shipping charge, coupon, or unrelated price. These are candidate-selection challenges, not values OCR can resolve by itself.
- Normalize carefully. Convert equivalent formatting to a comparable representation while preserving the raw text and detected currency. Decimal and thousands separators vary by locale; do not strip punctuation or infer currency without a rule tied to the page’s locale or product data.
- Compare with the prior observation. Compare only records for the same product and variant, currency, and comparable offer conditions. Store both the normalized value and its source observation.
- Route uncertainty to review. Flag weak OCR results, multiple plausible prices, missing currency, or changed offer wording instead of silently reporting a definitive price change.
This is an application design pattern, not a ready-made price-tracking feature or an accuracy guarantee from an OCR provider. The cited vendor documentation does not establish an error rate or head-to-head performance for product-page screenshots.

Choose an OCR mode for screenshots
Google Cloud Vision distinguishes two image-text modes. TEXT_DETECTION detects text in images and returns the full extracted string plus individual words and bounding boxes. DOCUMENT_TEXT_DETECTION is designed for dense text and returns a richer page, block, paragraph, word, and break structure. For a typical web-page screenshot, start by evaluating general image text detection, then validate against screenshots from the sites, languages, image quality, and price formats you actually need to monitor. Google Cloud Vision OCR modes
Google says Cloud Vision can extract text and handwriting from images in different languages. Its OCR use-case page describes immediate processing for up to 16 images and asynchronous batch processing for up to 2,000 images per request. Those are service capabilities, not a recommendation for how often to capture a page. Google Cloud OCR use case

AWS Textract is another service to evaluate: AWS describes it as extracting printed text, handwriting, layout elements, and data from scanned documents, and its Detect Document Text API uses OCR. The cited material does not provide comparative results for product-page screenshots, so it does not establish that Textract or Cloud Vision is more accurate for this task. Amazon Textract
Capture screenshots consistently
OCR can only interpret what appears in the supplied image. If a page loads a different variant, currency, or offer on one capture, comparing the resulting numbers can create a false alert. Decide in advance which page state represents the offer you want to monitor, and keep the product and locale metadata alongside each image. If a page changes dynamically, use a consistent capture point and inspect cases where the expected offer area is absent.

For a do-it-yourself browser capture, a repeatable browser automation setup can save the page as an image before OCR. Preserve the capture time and URL, and avoid treating a failed load or challenge page as a price observation.
Or skip the browser setup: use ScreenshotNeo
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request captures a URL as an image or PDF; the returned image can then enter the OCR and comparison pipeline above. Its clean-shot options can accept cookie or consent banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, with each step configurable. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents.
The following cURL call saves a screenshot of a product page as WebP. Replace the example URL with the page you are monitoring and provide your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details.

Estimate OCR usage costs
Google Cloud Vision pricing is usage-based and may depend on payment currency and tier; check the current pricing page before deploying. As accessed in 2026, Google listed the first 1,000 units per month as free and Text Detection and Document Text Detection at $1.50 per 1,000 units for units 1,001 through 5,000,000, with a lower listed rate above that tier. Google Cloud Vision pricing
Google’s OCR use-case page showed an estimated monthly cost of $27.36 when accessed in 2026. That worked example assumes 15,000 monthly Cloud Vision OCR API calls plus related infrastructure; it is not a general estimate for every screenshot-monitoring implementation. Google Cloud OCR use case

Troubleshoot misleading or missing changes
- No price detected: Check whether the screenshot shows the intended page state and whether the offer is rendered visibly in the image. Review the raw OCR output before changing parsing rules.
- Several prices detected: Use bounding boxes and nearby text to prioritize the offer region, but flag unresolved alternatives for review. Do not select the numerically lowest or most prominent amount by default.
- A false price-change alert appears: Verify product variant, locale, currency, and offer conditions across both observations. Then inspect the stored screenshots and raw OCR text for changed page content or formatting.
- Numbers parse differently across locales: Apply locale-aware separator rules and preserve the original recognized string. Do not convert a value until its currency and number format are sufficiently established.
- OCR provider choice is unclear: Test each candidate on representative screenshots from your target sites and languages. The cited Google and AWS materials do not provide a benchmark for this exact use case.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does OCR tell me which amount is the current offer price?
No. OCR recognizes text; your system must select and validate the candidate price using context, layout, and product or offer rules.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can Cloud Vision or Textract be assumed to be more accurate for product screenshots?
No. The cited sources describe capabilities, not comparative accuracy on product-page screenshots. Validate with representative pages from your own monitoring set.
