To detect disposable email domains without manually reviewing signups, check each address against a maintained domain list or send it to a hosted detection API. Both approaches automate screening, but their results are risk signals—not proof that an address is fraudulent or legitimate.
Choose a detection method
The two common approaches are a local lookup against disposable-domain data and a hosted API that checks an email address or domain. The available documentation confirms these features, but does not establish independent accuracy rates or identify a universally best option.

| Approach | What it does | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Local domain list | Checks the address’s domain against data maintained in your application or a library. | Update cadence, list provenance and license, exception handling, and how your system behaves if a refresh fails. |
| Hosted API | Sends an email address or domain to a service for a disposable-status check; some services also describe syntax or DNS/MX checks and risk scoring. | Coverage, false-positive handling, latency and availability, data sent to a third party, cost, and behavior when the service cannot be reached. |
The cited documentation does not independently compare these options on coverage, privacy, performance, or reliability. Choose based on your application’s requirements and verify the provider’s current terms and behavior before adopting it.

Use a local domain list
A local lookup can avoid a network request for every signup. The BillionVerify repository documents exact and wildcard matching, custom exceptions, case-insensitive input, whitespace stripping, and IDN conversion. It also says its dataset is aggregated from community lists and updated hourly; those are repository claims that may change, so verify them before relying on the library.
#1 Best Overall
Local data only recognizes entries represented by the dataset and matching rules. Before deployment, review the list’s license and provenance, decide how to maintain updates, and test exceptions for domains your service must accept. Plan for refresh failures so an unavailable update does not silently leave the application with stale data.
Use a hosted detection API
DISIFY documents email and domain checks, syntax and DNS/MX checks, and access to a public blacklist. isDisposable describes an API risk score using blocklist, MX, and domain-age signals. These are vendor-described features, not independent evidence that the services detect every disposable provider or avoid false positives.

Before sending signup data to a hosted service, assess what information is transmitted and how the provider handles it. Also define what your application should do when a lookup times out or returns an error: reject the signup, allow it temporarily, or route it for another check. The right choice depends on your service’s privacy needs and tolerance for signup friction.
Interpret list sizes cautiously
Published counts describe different datasets, not a definitive total of disposable email domains. Their definitions, sources, deduplication methods, and update times are not harmonized.

| Publisher | Reported size | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| BillionVerify repository | Approximately 213,000 domains | Repository-reported, changing dataset size in 2026; not a count of all disposable domains. |
| IPNOVA | 76,804 domains | Vendor-reported merged-list size in 2026; not directly comparable to other lists. |
| isDisposable API documentation | 160,000+ domains | Vendor-reported blocklist figure in 2026, not an independently verified count. |
Use counts only to understand what a publisher says its dataset contains. They do not establish which list has better coverage or how often a detector will misclassify signups.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Make the decision a risk-based one
A disposable-domain match can support a signup policy, but treating it as conclusive can block users whose addresses happen to appear on a list. Likewise, an address that is not flagged is not proof that it is permanent or trustworthy. The available sources do not provide independent benchmarks, false-positive or false-negative rates, or evidence that any approach catches newly created disposable services reliably.
