Detect configuration drift by comparing each live production environment with a current, approved baseline, then alerting on meaningful differences and investigating them before remediation. A version-controlled infrastructure-as-code (IaC) definition gives you a repeatable desired state; a detector checks what it can see against that state. Detection is only as reliable as the baseline, resource coverage, and monitoring scope behind it.
What configuration drift means
Drift is a difference between a live environment’s current configuration and its desired baseline. AWS describes drift management as identifying and resolving that difference (AWS DevOps Guidance). The baseline must be clear and current: a comparison against outdated or incomplete definitions can report the wrong target, even if the detector works as designed.

Build a reliable drift-detection workflow
1. Define what is in scope
List the environments, accounts or projects, Regions, clusters, services, and configuration classes that matter. Decide which differences are intentional—for example, environment-specific capacity or endpoints—and which must remain consistent, such as security controls or approved runtime settings. Document exclusions instead of letting them become invisible blind spots.
For disaster recovery (DR), do not compare configuration values alone. Include service availability, capacity, quotas, and versions; a recovery environment can match selected settings yet still lack the resources or limits needed to run the service.

2. Establish and maintain the desired baseline
Keep intended infrastructure state in version-controlled IaC and make sure its definitions represent production. Route changes through reviewed deployment pipelines, and test changes in a separate staging environment before production. AWS recommends IaC for version control, testing, and repeatability, as well as staging before production (AWS DevOps Guidance).
If people can modify resources directly, treat those changes as exceptions to investigate. Determine whether a manual change was approved or an emergency fix, then reconcile the approved outcome back into the source of truth. Otherwise, the next comparison may flag a legitimate change—or a deployment may overwrite it.
3. Choose a detector that answers the right question
Separate a live-state check from a code-change preview. For an AWS CDK application, cdk drift checks a deployed stack by comparing actual resource state with the expected CloudFormation configuration. cdk diff compares the locally synthesized template with the deployed template; it previews template changes, not whether live resources have drifted. The AWS CDK v2 reference documents cdk drift <stack>; without a stack argument, it checks all stacks in the CDK app. Its --fail option returns exit code 1 when drift is detected (AWS CDK v2 drift command reference).

For broader AWS resource-configuration monitoring, AWS Config can discover supported resources, record configuration history, evaluate rules, and notify a configured SNS topic. Coverage depends on the Region and resource types you enable. AWS states that recording is best effort and can take longer than expected, so do not treat it as an instantaneous or universally complete view (AWS Config overview).
CloudFormation drift detection does not support every AWS resource type. Verify support for the resources behind the controls you depend on (AWS CDK v2 drift command reference). Likewise, AWS Config sees only supported resources within its enabled scope. Neither example establishes coverage of every runtime setting, application-level value, third-party system, or manually managed configuration. Define those boundaries explicitly.
4. Record findings and alert on useful changes
Make each finding actionable. Where available, retain the resource identity, changed fields, environment, detection time, actor or change mechanism, baseline version, and detector result. AWS Config notifications can include configuration-change or compliance-change information. Alert on unexplained or policy-relevant deviations rather than flooding responders with expected environment-specific differences. AWS recommends monitoring and alerting for drift across primary and DR environments (AWS Config overview; AWS Prescriptive Guidance: monitoring for disaster recovery).

5. Investigate before correcting
Classify the difference before changing anything. It may be an approved change not yet reflected in IaC, an emergency fix, a deployment defect, an unauthorized modification, or a stale baseline. Assess service impact and identify the responsible team. AWS DevOps guidance emphasizes clear communication and shared responsibility between platform and workload teams (AWS DevOps Guidance).

Where practical, remediate through the reviewed deployment path so the live environment and approved definition converge. Automate remediation only for well-understood cases, with appropriate guardrails and rollback. Preserve the finding and change record for audit, then run detection again to verify the result. AWS guidance recommends monitoring, automated remediation, and periodic audits (AWS DevOps Guidance).
6. Check consistency across environments over time
Verify that pipelines deliver approved changes to every required environment. Stagger primary and DR rollouts so a problem can be observed before it spreads. Schedule recurring comparisons and check that the monitoring service remains enabled for the intended Regions and resource types; a detector that has silently lost scope creates false confidence. For recovery readiness, compare versions, availability, capacity, quotas, and limits alongside configuration (AWS Prescriptive Guidance: monitoring for disaster recovery).

How to choose an IaC or monitoring tool
Choose based on the environment and the comparison you need, not the product label. AWS’s IaC selection guidance says CloudFormation or CDK can suit infrastructure managed entirely on AWS, while Terraform may suit multi-provider or hybrid and multi-cloud needs; the right fit depends on organizational requirements and operating model (AWS Prescriptive Guidance: choosing an IaC tool).
| Decision factor | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Provider coverage | Does the tool cover the cloud providers and hybrid systems in scope? |
| Inspection coverage | Which resource types and properties can it actually inspect, and what is excluded? |
| Comparison target | Does it compare live state, deployed state files, or generated templates? These answer different questions. |
| State and auditability | Can teams identify the approved baseline, who changed it, and how a finding was resolved? |
| Operations integration | Can it feed CI/CD, alerting, and guarded remediation workflows? |
| Ownership and fit | Do the team’s skills, operating model, and ongoing ownership match the tool? |
Before relying on a detector for a production control, validate it against representative resources and properties, confirm its scope in each relevant Region or environment, and establish how findings reach the team responsible for them. The AWS examples above establish AWS resource-configuration behavior; they do not establish commands or coverage limits for other clouds, Kubernetes, application configuration stores, or third-party SaaS.
