How to Detect and Remove Unauthorized AI Agents in Your Browser and Cloud Apps

Find unauthorized AI access by checking browser extensions, connected OAuth apps, and service identities, then revoke access through the control that granted it.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To find and stop an unauthorized AI agent, check every place it could have access: your browser extensions or active browser tasks, connected OAuth apps, and organizational service identities or API credentials. Verify the app’s permissions, owner, users who approved it, and activity records; then revoke or block access through the relevant browser or cloud-provider controls.

Why one check is not enough

An AI agent may get access through several different routes. A browser extension can read or interact with website content; an OAuth-connected app can access services such as email, files, or calendars; and an organizational service identity or API credential can grant access without appearing as a browser extension or familiar consumer app.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

These routes have different owners and controls. Removing an extension will not revoke an OAuth grant, and revoking an app’s consent will not remove an extension from a browser profile. Investigate each layer that applies to the affected user, device, and organization rather than relying on an AI-themed app name or a single security screen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no universal indicator that proves an agent is unauthorized. The stronger evidence is the combination of who owns it, what permissions it has, who authorized it, what activity it performed, and whether that access matches an approved business purpose.

Use the same distinction when deciding how broadly to respond. A suspicious extension may affect one browser profile; an app grant may belong to one user or be shared across a tenant; a service credential may be used by an integration rather than a person. The right containment action depends on the mechanism and scope, not simply on the label “AI agent.”

Start by identifying the affected account and preserving evidence

Before changing access, note the browser profile and device, the affected user account and cloud tenant, the approximate time you discovered the issue, and any app or extension names involved. If compromise is suspected, preserve relevant audit, sign-in, and activity records before making changes, when your incident-response process allows it. Those records can help establish how access was granted and what happened afterward.

For an organization, identify who is responsible for the user account, browser management, identity provider, and affected SaaS service. A browser user may be able to remove an extension, but tenant-wide OAuth controls and service credentials may require an administrator. Keep the investigation scoped: access may affect one browser profile, one user, a shared app, or an entire tenant.

Build a short timeline as you investigate: when the concern was discovered, when a grant or extension appeared, which user authorized it, and what later activity is visible. Record the app’s owner or publisher, requested scopes, and any reply or redirect destinations shown in the administrator console. These details give the responsible owner or incident responder something specific to verify, and help avoid removing the wrong integration.

How do I detect an unauthorized AI agent in my browser?

Review installed extensions and their access

Open the browser’s installed-extension list and review extensions that you do not recognize, no longer need, or cannot connect to an approved owner. In Chrome, you can open chrome://extensions to view installed extensions and manage them. In other browsers, use their extension or add-ons settings; labels and administrative controls vary.

For each questionable extension, compare its stated purpose with its permissions. Pay particular attention to permissions that let it read or change website content, or access broad sets of sites. Chrome extensions need host permission to access a page and may use host permissions to manipulate page content with JavaScript, so broad page access deserves scrutiny. It is a risk signal, not proof of malicious behavior: an extension may need access to do its job, but the scope should make sense for that purpose.

  • Can you identify the extension’s owner and a business or personal reason for installing it?
  • Do its website permissions match the sites it needs to work on?
  • Was it approved under your organization’s browser or software policy?
  • Is there activity or a recent installation that aligns with the time access became a concern?

Do not decide based on a product name alone. A legitimate extension can have unnecessarily broad access, and an unapproved tool may use a name that does not mention AI.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assess an extension against both its declared purpose and the access it actually requests. For example, an extension described as helping with a limited browser task deserves a closer look if its permissions cover many unrelated sites. Conversely, broad access by itself does not establish that the extension is malicious; it tells you to verify the owner, approval status, and need. If you cannot identify an accountable owner or a valid reason for the permission, escalate the question rather than treating the product label as the answer.

Check for an active browser task

An AI feature operating in a browser may act within an authenticated session. That means it could encounter pages where you are already signed in, rather than requiring a separate sign-in to each service. Treat tasks involving sensitive accounts, business systems, personal data, or financial actions as higher impact, and monitor what the browser is doing.

If a Chrome auto-browse task is doing something unwanted, Google’s instructions are to use its Stop or Take over control. Stopping or taking over an active task is different from uninstalling an extension: check both the task and the installed-extension list if you are unsure where access comes from. Google cautions that “Chrome’s safeguards for auto browse described above don’t guarantee protection against all risks.”

Browser agents also handle content from pages and tool outputs. Such content can contain malicious instructions, so do not assume that an agent’s task is safe simply because it was started in a familiar browser or on a site where you are already signed in. Keep a person involved in sensitive actions and watch for unexpected navigation, changes, or requests for additional access. Treat this as a reason to monitor carefully, not as proof that a particular task has been compromised.

Remove or restrict a suspect extension

  1. Open the browser’s extension-management screen and identify the extension you intend to remove. In Chrome, use chrome://extensions.
  2. Disable the extension first if you need to interrupt its activity while confirming the correct item, or choose the browser’s remove option if it is clearly unwanted. Browser labels may differ by version.
  3. In a managed organization, ask the browser administrator to review or apply the organization’s extension policy. A user may not be able to remove an extension that is installed or controlled by policy.
  4. Revisit the extension list after the change and confirm the item is no longer enabled or installed. If it reappears, investigate the management policy or other installation mechanism rather than repeatedly removing it.

Removing an extension addresses that browser installation; it does not by itself establish whether the extension accessed data earlier or whether the same tool has separate cloud permissions.

For the specific question “How do I remove an AI extension from Chrome?”, start at chrome://extensions, identify the item, and use Chrome’s disable or remove control. If the extension is managed by an organization, the administrator may need to change the policy that installs or permits it. Then check whether a separate active auto-browse task or cloud grant exists: removing the extension alone does not stop those other access routes.

How can I tell which apps have access to my files, email, or calendar?

Inspect connected apps and OAuth grants

Use the identity-provider or SaaS administration controls for the relevant account or tenant to find connected or OAuth apps. Look for unfamiliar app names, ownership or publisher details, reply or redirect destinations, requested permission scopes, and the users who authorized each app. Then review grant events and subsequent sign-in or activity records where available.

Microsoft Defender for Cloud Apps documents investigation of risky OAuth apps through alerts and app details, including permissions and authorizing users. Its policies can notify administrators when apps meet configured criteria and allow permissions to be marked approved or banned. The exact screens and available controls depend on the provider, tenant configuration, and administrator role; Microsoft’s guidance is not a universal menu path for every cloud service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Interpret permissions in context. A scope that allows access to files or email may be reasonable for an approved work tool, but it becomes concerning if the app has no accountable owner, the user did not authorize it, or the requested access exceeds its stated purpose. Verify the app’s identity and business need with its owner, then compare actual scopes with the approved requirement.

When investigating, separate the questions “what can this app access?” and “what has it accessed?” Permission scopes describe the access that was granted; audit, sign-in, or activity records can help show the grant event and subsequent activity. Use both where the provider makes them available. A permission list alone does not prove misuse, and an unfamiliar name alone does not explain who approved the connection.

Look beyond apps with AI in the name

Search for all apps with relevant access, not just those labeled as AI agents or assistants. A connected app can have a generic name, and an AI-branded app is not automatically unauthorized. The useful questions are who approved it, which account or service it can reach, what permissions it received, and whether the activity is expected.

Also consider organizational service identities and API credentials. An agent or integration may operate through a service account or key rather than a user-visible OAuth connection. The Australian Cyber Security Centre recommends maintaining an inventory of AI accounts, service identities, and credentials. If those mechanisms are in use in your environment, include them in the investigation and identify their accountable owner.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, the practical approach is to inspect the connected-app or OAuth controls in the relevant identity or administration console, then examine scopes, authorizing users, and available audit or sign-in records. Do not assume the same menu names or coverage across products, editions, and tenants. Microsoft documents OAuth app investigation and governance, but exact controls remain provider- and tenant-specific. If you do not have administrator access, ask the organization’s identity or SaaS administrator to review the grant.

Revoke access and respond to possible compromise

Block or revoke the app through the provider

If an app is unapproved or confirmed risky, use the relevant provider’s controls to block or ban it, or revoke its consent. In Microsoft Defender for Cloud Apps, Microsoft documents banning app access as a remediation option. For other identity providers and SaaS services, use their current administrator documentation because control names and effects differ.

Before acting, make sure you have identified the correct app and scope. A control may apply to one user or to the organization, and blocking a shared business integration can interrupt legitimate work. If the app is clearly unauthorized or harmful, prioritize containment according to your organization’s incident-response process and notify the responsible administrator.

For “How do I revoke an AI app’s access to Google Workspace or Microsoft 365?”, identify the provider and tenant that issued the authorization, find the app’s OAuth grant, verify the app and the users who authorized it, and use the provider’s current control to revoke consent or block the app. In an organization, this may require an administrator. Check whether other users granted the same app access, because removing one user’s grant may not address other grants or an organization-wide app policy.

Assess credentials, sessions, and persistence

If there is evidence or a credible suspicion that an account was compromised, investigate more than the original app grant. Review potentially exposed credentials and, as appropriate, reset affected credentials and revoke affected API keys, sessions, and tokens. The Australian Cyber Security Centre recommends promptly removing unnecessary access and revoking affected keys, sessions, and tokens during incident response.

After containment, look for persistence: new permissions, newly created credentials, additional connected apps, or other changes that could preserve access. Where multiple users may have authorized the same app, identify them and assess each grant rather than assuming the first user was the only one affected.

Take care to distinguish routine cleanup from a suspected compromise. Removing an app that is no longer needed may be a straightforward access-governance task. If there are signs that credentials or accounts were exposed, coordinate the response through the organization’s incident process so that relevant records are preserved and related keys, sessions, tokens, and credentials are assessed together. Do not assume that removing the original app resolves a separate exposed credential.

Verify what the change actually did

Use provider audit, sign-in, or activity records to confirm that the intended grant or app access was changed, and check for later activity. Do not assume that revocation instantly ends every existing session or deletes data the app may already have copied. The reviewed official guidance does not establish a universal revocation delay or data-erasure guarantee; confirm the behavior for the specific provider and use incident-response tooling to assess prior access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verification should match the containment action. If you removed an extension, check the affected browser profile and any applicable managed-browser policy. If you revoked an OAuth grant, confirm the app’s status in the provider’s records and inspect other users’ grants. If you disabled a service credential, confirm that the relevant identity or integration no longer has that credential and review related activity. A successful change in one control plane does not establish that every other access route has been closed.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Choose the investigation path by access mechanism

Access route Evidence to examine Typical containment scope
Browser extension Extension owner, permissions, website or host access, installation and management status One browser profile, or managed-browser policy
OAuth-connected app Requested scopes, app identity and owner, authorizing users, grant and activity records One user’s grant, one app, or an organization’s app policy
Service identity or API credential Credential inventory, accountable owner, associated permissions, and relevant activity The affected identity or credential, with related access reviewed

This comparison helps avoid a common containment mistake: applying a control to the wrong layer. A browser extension is investigated in browser controls; a user-consented cloud app is investigated in identity or SaaS controls; and an API credential requires the owner and administrator to locate and manage that credential.

As you choose a path, compare five things: the access mechanism, the sensitivity and breadth of its scope, the evidence available, the containment scope, and what the provider can do to alert, restrict, revoke, and verify. Page access is not the same as access to email or files, and a user-level grant is not the same as a tenant-wide policy. The investigation should answer which mechanism is involved, how much access it allows, who approved it, what activity is visible, and whether the available control addresses just that grant or a wider set of users.

There is no universal prevalence figure for unauthorized AI agents in the official materials cited here, and example policy thresholds are not prevalence statistics. Do not use unrelated figures about AI adoption, OAuth apps, or browser extensions as a proxy for how common unauthorized agents are. Likewise, providers do not share one universal revocation delay; verify the behavior of the particular service rather than promising that access ends immediately.

Reduce the chance of another unwanted grant

  • Maintain an inventory of AI accounts, service identities, and credentials, with an accountable owner for each.
  • Grant only the access needed for a defined purpose and remove it when it is no longer required.
  • Use approval policies for high-risk OAuth apps and monitor permission changes and unusual activity.
  • Where organizational browser controls allow it, restrict extensions to approved items and make the approval owner clear.
  • Keep users in control of sensitive browser actions, especially when an agent is working in an authenticated session.
  • When investigating an incident, retain useful audit and sign-in records so you can verify both the initial grant and the outcome of remediation.

These controls should be applied at the provider and organization level that actually governs the access. Browser versions, extension policies, tenant configuration, token lifetimes, and revocation behavior vary, so use current documentation for the affected browser, identity provider, and SaaS service.

This is primarily an access-control and administration task: browser settings, cloud identity consoles, SaaS controls, and security administration tools are the relevant places to investigate. Generic hardware or antivirus software is not a substitute for removing a browser extension, revoking an OAuth grant, or rotating an affected credential. Organizations evaluating Microsoft Defender for Cloud Apps can consider its documented OAuth investigation, policy-alerting, and app-remediation functions, while checking current product fit and eligibility for their environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I detect an unauthorized AI agent in my browser?

Review installed extensions and their owner, permissions, and approval status; check for active browser tasks; and consider whether the browser is signed in to sensitive services. Broad website access is a signal to investigate, not proof of malicious activity. If a Chrome auto-browse task is doing something unwanted, use Stop or Take over, then check whether a separate extension or cloud app also has access.

How do I remove an AI extension from Chrome?

Open chrome://extensions, identify the extension, and use Chrome’s disable or remove control. If it is managed by an organization, an administrator may need to change the browser policy. Check separately for an active browser task or cloud permission, since removing the extension does not remove those other access routes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I tell which apps have access to my files, email, or calendar?

Use the identity-provider or SaaS administration controls to review connected apps and OAuth grants. Examine app identity and owner, permission scopes, users who authorized it, and available grant, sign-in, or activity records. Search beyond AI-branded app names.

How do I revoke an AI app’s access to Google Workspace or Microsoft 365?

Locate the app’s OAuth grant in the relevant provider or tenant, verify the app and the users who authorized it, then use the provider’s current controls to revoke consent or block the app. Organizational access may require an administrator. Review other users’ grants and verify the change in provider records; menus and revocation behavior vary.

Does revoking an app guarantee that it cannot use existing sessions or data it already copied?

No universal guarantee or revocation delay applies across providers. Check the service’s current documentation and audit or incident-response tools to determine what happened to sessions and previously accessed data. Revocation does not establish that data already copied has been deleted.

Should I buy antivirus or hardware to remove an unauthorized AI agent?

Not as a substitute for removing the access itself. Use browser controls for extensions, identity or SaaS administration controls for OAuth grants, and the responsible administrator’s credential controls for service identities or API keys.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Investigate the access route before acting: browser extension, OAuth-connected app, or service identity/API credential. Verify ownership, permissions, approvers, and activity, then remove or revoke access through the control that granted it. Check the other layers too, preserve records if compromise is suspected, and confirm the result in provider logs—because one removal does not prove every session, grant, or copied record is gone.
