A lightbox is a panel layered over a webpage, often with a dimmed backdrop. To close one, try its visible close button or press Escape; to confirm it is truly modal, check whether focus stays inside it and the page behind it cannot be used. Appearance alone is not proof of modal behavior.
How to recognize a lightbox
Look for a panel sitting above the page, often accompanied by a darkened backdrop. That visual treatment is a clue, not a guarantee: a panel can look like a modal without actually restricting interaction with the rest of the page.

For a native HTML dialog, inspect whether a <dialog> element is open and whether the page opened it with showModal(). Unlike a dialog opened with show(), showModal() places it in the top layer, supplies a ::backdrop, and makes the rest of that document inert. See MDN’s showModal() reference.

The latter communicates modal scope to assistive technology, but it does not by itself trap keyboard focus or disable background controls. Those behaviors need to be checked separately; see MDN’s aria-modal reference.

How to close it and check the result
- Use the visible close control. Activate the button or other clearly labeled control provided by the overlay.
- Try Escape. Native modal dialogs support Escape dismissal, and the WAI-ARIA modal dialog pattern lists “Escape: Closes the dialog.” Custom overlays may behave differently, so verify the result rather than assuming. WAI-ARIA Authoring Practices: Dialog (Modal) Pattern
- Test keyboard focus while it is open. Focus should move into a modal. Press Tab and Shift+Tab: focus should remain within the dialog rather than reaching controls behind it.
- Check focus after dismissal. When the overlay closes, focus generally returns to the control that opened it. This makes keyboard navigation easier to resume. MDN: dialog role
- Check the page behind it. A modal prevents interaction with underlying content. With a native dialog opened by
showModal(), the rest of the same document is inert. If the dialog is inside an iframe, this does not make the containing page outside that iframe inert.
Do not assume that clicking the backdrop will close the overlay. That behavior is not universal; use the provided close control or test the widget’s documented behavior.
Native dialog or custom overlay?
| What to check | Native <dialog> with showModal() |
Custom overlay |
|---|---|---|
| Modal state | showModal() opens the dialog modally; show() does not. |
Inspect its implementation and test whether it actually behaves modally. |
| Background interaction | The rest of the same document becomes inert. | The implementation must prevent interaction with background content. |
| Keyboard focus | Focus is managed within the modal; verify return to the invoking control after close. | The developer must provide appropriate focus movement and containment. |
| Close behavior | Escape can dismiss a modal dialog; provide an explicit close mechanism as well. | Do not assume Escape, a close button, or backdrop-click behavior without testing. |
| Semantics | The built-in dialog element provides dialog semantics. | Appropriate dialog semantics and accessible naming must be supplied. |
MDN describes the dialog API as widely available across browsers, with availability across browsers since March 2022. Check MDN’s browser-compatibility data for any legacy or embedded browser you need to support.

If it will not close
- Try the visible close control, then Escape. If neither works, the custom widget may not implement those behaviors or may override Escape handling.
- For a developer audit, inspect the DOM and event behavior; there is no universal selector or API that identifies every custom lightbox.
- Check whether focus can leave the overlay and whether background controls remain usable. A visual backdrop or
aria-modal="true"alone does not establish working modal behavior. - If the overlay is in an iframe, distinguish the iframe’s document from the containing page when checking what remains interactive.
