Design software to stay quiet during focused work, let users control nonessential interruptions, and reserve immediate alerts for genuine emergencies. When an interruption is necessary, make its relevance clear and help people return to the task they left.
Give users control over nonessential interruptions
Make it easy to postpone or suppress routine notifications, reminders, and content changes. Provide controls people can find quickly, allow them to tune interruptions by type, channel, or timing, and give them a place to review anything deferred.

WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 2.2.4 states: “Interruptions can be postponed or suppressed by the user, except interruptions involving an emergency.” This is a Level AAA criterion, not a requirement at every WCAG conformance level. It does not mean every software product must disable all notifications. WCAG is a web-content accessibility standard, and the criterion addresses user control over interruptions within its scope. W3C’s explanation of SC 2.2.4 describes an emergency as a sudden, unexpected situation requiring immediate action to preserve health, safety, or property, including preventing data loss or loss of connection.

Control automatic movement and updates
Notifications are not the only source of interruption. Moving, blinking, or scrolling content and automatically refreshed information can displace what someone is reading or doing. WCAG 2.2 SC 2.2.2 covers specific cases:
- Moving, blinking, or scrolling content: If it starts automatically, lasts more than five seconds, and appears alongside other content, provide a way to pause, stop, or hide it unless the movement is essential.
- Automatically updating content: If it appears alongside other content, provide a way to pause, stop, hide, or control the update frequency unless the updates are essential.
These are scoped criteria, not a blanket ban on animation or live updates. Choose a control suited to the content: for example, let a reader pause a moving banner or choose how often a live feed refreshes. See W3C’s explanation of SC 2.2.2 for the criterion’s conditions and exceptions.
Make alerts relevant and choose timing carefully
An interruption has a cost beyond the moment it appears: the user must decide whether it matters, process it, and recover their place. Microsoft Research reports that, in the setting it studied, irrelevant instant messages took longer to process and led to longer task-resumption times than relevant messages. A separate study reported that notifications arriving during evaluation, planning, and execution were harmful in its task context, while delivery early in the task—before deep engagement—was better.

These findings support testing for relevance and task phase; they do not establish a universally best notification schedule. Consider what the person is doing, whether the message relates to that work, how urgent it is, and what the user expects. Let people tune notification behavior, then measure interruption, task completion, and recovery in the product’s actual context. Do not rely on a single study to decide that one time is best for everyone.
Help people resume where they left off
Some interruptions cannot be avoided. Reduce their lingering cost by preserving task state and making the next step visible when the user returns. Keep the original context available where possible rather than forcing someone to reconstruct it from memory.

- Tell people what information or materials they will need before they begin, so an interruption is less likely to leave them uncertain about what comes next.
- Avoid unnecessary distracting elements around active work, and make deferred information easy to review without reopening every notification individually.
W3C’s cognitive accessibility guidance on interruptions recommends user controls over reminders and content changes, choices about interruption types and timing, and simple ways to pause or review later. It also points to headings and breadcrumbs as aids to refocusing. This pattern is supplemental guidance, not a WCAG conformance requirement.

- When does it arrive relative to the task and the user’s level of engagement?
- How intrusive is its modality in this product and context?
- How easily can the person return to the interrupted task?
