A reliable physical robot test starts with a clearly bounded task and intended use, then records the robot, setup, procedure, measures, and failures well enough for another team to repeat it. Test the integrated system as well as useful components, include variation that reflects deployment, and verify simulation-based conclusions on hardware when the claim concerns real-world performance.
What should a physical robot test establish?
First state the decision the evaluation is meant to support: comparing systems, tracking a software revision, assessing task completion, measuring safety, or estimating robustness to changes. Then define the task boundary and operating envelope: what the robot must do, in what environment, with which objects or people, and under what conditions.

Without those boundaries, a score is hard to interpret. A result from one fixture, object set, or lighting condition does not by itself establish performance in a different deployment. NIST’s Physical AI and Data Generation for Robotics project describes the practical gap between embodied-AI research and what manufacturers can implement, and develops methods and measurement resources relevant to that gap.

How should the task be broken into measurable parts?
Measure both the overall task and the capabilities that help explain its outcome. NIST’s Performance Assessment Framework derives robot tests from task requirements and an assembly-operation taxonomy, then combines component measurements into system performance models. Its framework treats perception, mobility, dexterity, and safety as measurable areas.

Separate task success from diagnostic measures
For a manipulation task, an observable sequence might be detecting and locating an object, approaching it, grasping it, transporting it, and completing a placement or assembly action. Define task-level success separately from intermediate outcomes such as localization quality or grasp success. The overall result answers whether the task was completed; component measures help identify where and why it failed.
A robot’s result belongs to the integrated system, not just its learned policy or a single sensor. NIST’s robotics measurement-science program describes a robot as a system involving sensing, state estimation, planning, and action, and calls for measurement of components and the overall system. For embodied AI, record the physical platform, sensors, end effector, controller, and learned decision component as part of the evaluated configuration.
What setup details make a test reproducible?
Record enough information to reconstruct the physical conditions and software configuration. NIST’s assessment work describes testbeds spanning arms, mobile bases, hands and grippers, and sensor systems; its manipulation program identifies end-effector tests and assembly task boards as standards-development areas.

- Trial conditions: initial robot and object states, reset procedure, task instructions, environmental conditions, and trial order where order effects may matter.
A gripper is one component of a grasping test, not a complete test system. Select it in relation to the grasp type, payload, robot compatibility, mounting, and measurements required by the protocol. NIST’s grasping and contact-safety program lists end-effector performance testing and assembly task boards among its relevant work areas.
How should the procedure and results be recorded?
Write the protocol so an independent team can run it without relying on undocumented judgment. NIST’s 2021 NISTIR 8345 HRI workshop report identifies transparency, repeatability, reproducibility, and trust as goals for independent assessment. In practice, that means the procedure and per-trial record are part of the evidence, not administrative extras.
- Prepare the test: specify the fixture, reset steps, initial conditions, task instructions, and checks that confirm the setup is ready.
- Set decision rules: define retries, timeout and stopping rules, safety controls, human interventions, and how each type of failure is categorized.
- Run and log every trial: retain the configuration, conditions, outcome, interventions, and failure details for each run, not only the aggregate score.
- Report the measures: define each metric, its units and denominator, and how missing, interrupted, or invalid trials are handled.
Keep the primary task outcome alongside diagnostic measures relevant to the task: perception quality, grasp or manipulation outcomes, mobility performance, time or throughput, contact or safety measures, and recovery behavior as applicable. Avoid an opaque composite score that conceals failure modes. If a composite is needed for a decision, explain its components and retain the underlying results.

Which variations should a robustness test include?
Choose variation because it represents the intended deployment, not simply because it makes a benchmark harder. NIST’s agility work identifies unexpected events, obstacles, failures, and part or environmental variation as evaluation concerns.
- Change objects or parts in ways expected in the target workflow.
- Include relevant environmental differences, such as layout or surface changes.
- Test obstacles, unexpected events, or recoverable failures when these can occur in use.
- State explicitly which variations were tested and which remain outside the test’s scope.
Report performance by condition when an overall average could hide an important weakness. A test with many nominal repetitions but no deployment-relevant variation may establish consistency only for that narrow setup.
How should physical and simulated evaluations be paired?
Simulation is useful for developing scenarios, screening approaches, and running controlled experiments. It is not, by itself, proof that a policy will perform similarly on hardware. The appropriate design depends on the claim being made:

| Evaluation approach | What it can support | What it does not establish alone |
|---|---|---|
| Simulation only | Repeatable exploration of scenarios and simulated-system comparisons. | Physical performance or that simulated rankings predict hardware rankings. |
| Physical testing | Observed outcomes on the specified hardware and test conditions. | Performance in untested environments or configurations. |
| Matched simulation and physical tests | A direct comparison between simulated and physical outcomes under a declared protocol. | Universal transfer beyond the tested tasks, systems, and conditions. |
The 2019 paper “Sim2Real Predictivity: Does Evaluation in Simulation Predict Real-World Performance?” studied PointGoal navigation. In its original Habitat challenge setup, success had a Sim-vs-Real Correlation Coefficient (SRCC) of 0.18; after simulation-parameter tuning in that study, the value was 0.844. These figures describe that experiment, not a general simulator accuracy range. The result illustrates why a predictive-simulation claim should be tested by comparing matched tasks or policy rankings rather than assumed.
The 2020 RoboTHOR paper likewise describes paired simulated environments and physical counterparts for embodied-AI evaluation, and reports a gap between simulated and physical benchmark performance. NIST’s agility program describes a combined virtual/real testbed and a simulation-to-real pipeline; its ARIAC documentation describes dynamic simulated manufacturing tasks that can inform future agility metrics and methods. These efforts position simulation as one part of an evaluation program, alongside physical validation.
How should human interaction and safety be handled?
If the task includes people, contact, shared workspaces, or collaboration, define the interaction and safety questions as part of the test rather than treating them as general background conditions. NIST’s manipulation program describes standards work on test methods for measuring forces and pressures in human-robot contact, while its HRI workshop addresses holistic assessment in real-world teams.

How can teams judge whether a test is useful?
Before treating a result as evidence for a deployment decision, check whether the test is relevant to that decision and whether another team could interpret it. A useful protocol makes its coverage and limits visible:
- Task relevance: Does the task and operating envelope resemble the intended use?
- Repeatability and transparency: Are conditions, steps, metrics, and failures documented sufficiently to reconstruct the evaluation?
- Coverage: Does it measure both relevant components and integrated behavior?
- Robustness: Are the tested variations and excluded cases clear?
- Physical validity: Is the conclusion based on hardware, simulation, or matched tests in both?
- Diagnostic value: Can the result explain limitations and failures, rather than only produce a single score?
- Safety relevance: Do the measures address the actual human interaction and operating context?
There is no universal trial count, confidence threshold, acceptable sim-to-real gap, or single standard protocol established by the NIST and research sources discussed here. Set these choices for the decision and task, justify them in the protocol, and avoid presenting them as universal requirements.
