Make the device the primary place to read and edit notes; treat sync as the later exchange and reconciliation of durable local changes. Before choosing a library, define what counts as a conflict and what the app should do when devices disagree. Keep the landing page separate: it can be hand-authored static HTML and CSS, but GitHub Pages’ branch publishing uses Jekyll by default, so a strict zero-build setup must account for that behavior.
Start with the data contract, not the sync library
“Offline-first” means the user’s on-device copy is primary for ordinary reading and editing; those actions should not wait for a server round trip. Automerge’s official introduction describes users making independent changes offline and synchronizing them when connectivity returns. That promise depends on decisions the product must make before implementation.

Write down what a note contains and how it may change. A simple note might have a title, body, creation and modification metadata, and a deletion state; those are design choices, not requirements established by the libraries. Decide whether users can edit rich text, structured blocks, attachments, or only plain text, and whether edits are private to one user’s devices or collaborative with other people. Also define what deletion means when another device still has an older copy.
- Identity: how the app recognizes the same note on different devices.
- Change history: what information the sync process needs to tell which changes it has already exchanged.
- Conflict policy: whether overlapping changes merge, remain as separate versions, trigger a user choice, or follow a documented deterministic rule.
- Deletion: how a deletion is represented and what happens if an offline device later sends an edit to that note.
- Account and server model: whether sync requires an account, what service receives changes, and who operates it.
These decisions determine whether a library’s data model and sync approach fit. The documentation discussed below describes possibilities; it does not choose the product’s rules for you.

Choose a conflict policy that fits note editing
Reconnection is a reconciliation problem, not merely a network request. Android Developers’ Build an offline-first app puts the issue plainly: “If, when offline, the app writes data locally that is misaligned with the network data source, you must resolve the conflict before synchronization can happen.” Version metadata and a resolution policy are therefore part of the design.
When last-write-wins may be adequate
Android’s offline-first guidance describes version metadata and last-write-wins as a common strategy. It chooses the value treated as newer under the app’s rule. That can suit fields where the latest value is intended to replace the earlier one, but it can discard a meaningful concurrent edit to a freeform note body. This risk follows from the policy’s replacement behavior; it is not a measured result for this proposed app.

When automatic merging helps—and where it stops
Automerge describes local-first data structures that allow independent offline changes to be merged and presents its model for complex files as well as centralized-server synchronization. But automatic merge does not guarantee that every result matches user intent: Automerge’s documentation notes that concurrent changes to the same property may have no well-defined resolution. A product may need to show history, retain alternatives, or ask the user when an overlap is meaningful.

Yjs describes itself as a CRDT for collaborative applications, with network-agnostic transports and editor integrations. That makes it a candidate when its shared data types and integrations fit the document model. The available documentation does not establish an apples-to-apples performance comparison with Automerge or identify a winner for an unspecified notes app.

The table distinguishes what the cited project documentation establishes from what remains a product or implementation decision. Library capabilities and APIs can change; verify current documentation and target-browser support before committing.
| Decision axis | Automerge | Yjs |
|---|---|---|
| Data model | Local-first data structures for independent changes to structured, document-shaped data; described for complex files (Automerge official introduction and repository). | Shared data types for collaborative applications, with editor integrations (Yjs documentation). |
| Concurrent edits | Can merge independent offline changes, but the project notes that concurrent changes to the same property may lack a well-defined resolution (Automerge official introduction and repository). | CRDT-based approach for collaborative applications; the cited material does not establish the exact user-facing outcome for this app’s note-body or deletion conflicts (Yjs documentation). |
| Offline persistence | Persistent browser storage and restart behavior are not stated in the cited Automerge material. | The Yjs offline guide describes an IndexedDB provider for persisting document updates; confirm target browser and device support. |
| Transport and server | Documentation describes centralized-server sync as an option (Automerge official introduction). | Documentation describes network-agnostic transports (Yjs documentation); that does not by itself specify the app’s account, server, or deployment design. |
| Cost and operational reliability | Not stated in the cited Automerge material. | Not stated in the cited Yjs material. |
Choose only after testing the required editing patterns against each candidate’s data model. The documentation supports comparing capabilities, not assigning a cost, reliability ranking, or performance winner.

Separate offline note data from the offline app shell
A browser app has two distinct offline requirements: the interface resources must load, and note changes must survive locally. Yjs’s offline guide describes using its y-indexeddb provider to persist document updates and service workers to make resources such as HTML, JavaScript, and CSS available offline. These mechanisms address different layers.

- Load the app shell: make the required interface files available without a network connection, for example through service-worker caching as described in the Yjs offline guide.
- Persist note changes: write each edit to durable local storage rather than keeping it only in memory. The Yjs guide documents IndexedDB persistence for Yjs updates.
- Track pending sync work: retain enough change or version information to know what remains to be exchanged. The exact representation depends on the chosen data model and sync design.
- Reconcile after reconnection: exchange changes and apply the defined conflict policy before treating devices as up to date.
A cached shell is not a sync engine, and a sync library does not automatically guarantee that every screen can load offline. Design and verify each layer, including what happens after an app restart before synchronization.

Prototype the cases that can lose or alter a note
Before treating a sync design as complete, exercise a small set of scenarios and record the intended outcome for each. These are proposed product checks, not reported test results.
- One device edits a note while offline, then reconnects.
- Two devices edit different notes while offline.
- Two devices edit the same note body at the same time.
- One device deletes a note while another edits its older copy.
- The app restarts after an offline edit but before sync.
- A sync attempt fails because the connection drops, then retries.
- A device that has been offline for a long interval reconnects with older data.
For each case, specify whether the app merges changes, keeps both versions, asks the user, or applies a deterministic rule. Include the visible result and recovery path, not only the internal merge behavior. In particular, verify that a user can discover a conflict and recover a version rather than silently losing an important edit.
Make the landing page from static files
The marketing page and the note-taking app have different jobs. A landing page can be a few hand-authored HTML and CSS files, with plain JavaScript only if needed; it does not need a framework or bundler. That keeps the page’s authoring simple, but hosting behavior still matters.
GitHub Docs says, “GitHub Pages publishes static files that you push to your repository.” Its documentation also says branch publishing uses Jekyll by default. Therefore, publishing a static page does not automatically satisfy a literal zero-build-tools constraint: account for the Jekyll default, use the supported no-Jekyll approach where appropriate, and confirm the current Pages behavior for the chosen publishing setup. Do not assume that a plain HTML source tree means the hosting path invokes no build step.
Keep the landing page’s deployment independent from the app’s offline and sync architecture. Static hosting for product information does not provide a sync backend, and service-worker caching for the app shell does not resolve conflicts between note copies.
