How to Design a Zero-Heap Flight Software Architecture for Hard Real-Time Small Satellites

Design zero-heap flight software around bounded storage, analyzable timing, explicit fault behavior, and target-specific evidence—not an RTOS label alone.

To avoid dynamic memory allocation in flight software, make zero heap an explicit policy for the complete runtime dependency graph—not just application code—and use fixed-capacity storage with defined exhaustion behavior. To claim hard real-time behavior, pair that policy with bounded interrupt, scheduling, synchronization, and driver behavior, then support the deadline guarantees with analysis and testing on the target configuration.

There is no universal processor, RTOS, framework, or memory budget for a small satellite. NASA’s Small Spacecraft Systems Virtual Institute says avionics architecture depends on mission objectives, computational performance, data bandwidth, environmental robustness, and risk tolerance. The architecture and its evidence must therefore be derived from the mission.

How do I turn mission needs into timing and memory budgets?

Begin with mission functions and their consequences if delayed, starved, corrupted, or unavailable. For each time-critical function, record its timing and resource demands before choosing a scheduler or allocating buffers.

  • For each task or event-driven function, document its period or arrival pattern, deadline, worst-case execution-time budget, release jitter, interrupt sources, data volume, and recovery behavior.
  • Record safety consequence and priority rationale, including which functions must continue during overload or a fault.
  • Identify shared resources and every path that can block a critical function: locks, buses, device drivers, queues, logging, and callbacks.
  • Derive memory ceilings from the selected processor, workload, and mission requirements. Track code, read-only data, initialized and zero-initialized data, task stacks, task control structures, queues, static pools, DMA and device I/O buffers, telemetry, command storage, fault logs, and update/recovery reserves.

NASA’s Small Spacecraft Institute gives a sense of the range rather than a target: its 2026 page edition says onboard memory for small spacecraft varies from hundreds of KB to several GB. It also reports typical space-grade SRAM densities of 4 Mb to 32 Mb (0.5–4 MB). Neither figure is a sizing recommendation for an individual mission.

Keep the budget traceable: each task, buffer, and reserve should have an owner, a capacity, a requirement or design rationale, and a way to verify its limit. If a requirement changes, update the timing and memory budgets together; additional buffering may affect both storage and response time.

How do I avoid dynamic memory allocation in flight software?

Choose and document the allocation boundary. A strict policy forbids heap use throughout execution, including initialization. A phased policy may allow allocation during controlled startup, but it must define exactly when initialization ends and demonstrate that all allocation is complete before mission operations and deadline-critical activity begin. Do not let a startup exception become an undocumented runtime fallback.

Audit the whole runtime dependency graph: application code, RTOS, board-support package, drivers, framework, libraries, middleware, diagnostics, error handling, and update and recovery paths. A program that contains no direct allocator calls can still allocate through a library, logging path, driver, or framework service.

Use bounded storage with explicit ownership

For work that arrives after initialization, prefer statically created tasks, fixed-capacity queues, fixed-size objects, bounded block pools, and ring buffers. Define who owns each object, when ownership transfers, and when it becomes reusable. Keep object size and pool capacity tied to the mission’s traffic and concurrency assumptions.

Every capacity needs a defined exhaustion response. Depending on the function’s safety role, the system might reject a command, drop lower-priority telemetry, apply backpressure, enter a safe mode, or reset a recoverable partition. Select that behavior in the hazard and fault analysis; never silently fall back to an unbounded allocator.

Make allocation policy verifiable

Inspect source and link-time artifacts for allocator symbols and runtime call paths, then review indirect calls in dependencies and exceptional paths. If startup allocation is permitted, instrument or otherwise verify that no allocation occurs beyond the documented boundary. Treat this as an engineering policy and verification strategy: NASA-GB-8719.13 informs predictable timing and system selection, but it does not prescribe a universal zero-heap recipe.

How should tasks, interrupts, and communication be structured?

Keep interrupt handlers short and bounded. Have them capture the minimum required state and hand work to scheduled tasks through preallocated, bounded channels. Assign priorities from deadline and safety analysis rather than convenience, and account for every source of interference that can delay a critical task.

  • Bound interrupt masking, interrupt service time, system calls, driver critical sections, and synchronization waits.
  • Choose synchronization primitives with understood blocking and priority-inversion behavior; include the maximum blocking time in response-time analysis.
  • Bound retries and timeouts for bus and device operations. A failed peripheral must not create an unending retry loop or monopolize a shared resource.
  • Review callbacks, logging, error formatting, exception handling, and telemetry serialization for hidden blocking, unbounded loops, allocation, or priority changes.
  • Keep work queues bounded and define behavior when producers outrun consumers.

NASA-GB-8719.13 describes real-time OS characteristics that support determinism: preemptible multithreading, response-time scheduling for critical work, task priorities or deadline scheduling, predictable synchronization, priority inheritance, and known system-call and interrupt behavior. It also treats deadlines, jitter, off-nominal behavior, and bounded priority inversion as determinism concerns. These are properties to verify in the selected system and configuration, not labels to assume from an RTOS name.

Which RTOS or framework is suitable for a CubeSat?

There is no universal answer. NASA-GB-8719.13 puts the selection problem plainly: “Every system is unique, and there is no simple universal set of criteria for selecting an operating system.” Compare configured candidates against the mission and target hardware, not against a generic reputation.

Candidate named in NASA small-spacecraft materials High-level characterization in those materials What still needs verification for this mission
VxWorks Described as deterministic hard real-time. Worst-case timing, target-board support, memory footprint, protection, tools, lifecycle, and the behavior of the chosen configuration and dependencies.
RTEMS Described as a hard real-time embedded and space operating system. The same target-specific timing, footprint, isolation, integration, and verification evidence.
FreeRTOS Described as a lightweight microcontroller kernel. Whether the selected port and surrounding system meet the mission’s timing, protection, peripheral, and assurance requirements.
Linux Described as not real-time by default. Whether a particular configuration and system can satisfy the deadline and isolation requirements; the operating-system name alone establishes neither outcome.

NASA also lists cFS and F Prime in its small-spacecraft materials. cFS is described by NASA as a reusable, platform-independent framework built around a platform support package, an OS abstraction layer, and a core flight executive. A NASA NTRS abstract discusses cFS in memory-protected Linux processes and notes its increasing use on instruments and small satellites, alongside hardware-access and application-compatibility considerations. NASA lists F Prime as a framework used for embedded systems and spaceflight. These descriptions do not establish that either framework is zero-heap or hard real-time in every configuration; audit the actual code, OS, drivers, and dependencies.

Compare candidates on deadline and jitter evidence, memory footprint and protection, processor and peripheral support, software heritage and maturity, framework fit, fault containment and update approach, verification tools and workload, and lifecycle cost and schedule. NASA’s small-spacecraft materials also identify memory and processing resources, cost and schedule, and software heritage as factors in environment selection.

How should memory protection, faults, and updates fit into the design?

Partition functions according to the consequences of failure. Where the hardware and OS support it, use protected processes or partitions and constrain access to devices and memory. Where protection is unavailable, use strict interfaces, defensive bounds, code/data separation, integrity checks, and a defined watchdog and safe-state response.

Make memory exhaustion and corruption designed fault cases. Specify how the system detects them, reports them through bounded mechanisms, preserves essential control functions, and recovers. NASA’s Software Engineering Handbook says code/data partitioning can reduce unintended modification and may reduce verification effort; it also describes detecting memory modification and recovering to a known safe state.

Protect the update path

Include update staging and rollback needs in the memory map. Verify image identity and integrity before activation, and preserve a known-good image or other mission-appropriate recovery path. Do not overwrite executing code. Where redundant memory devices exist, update one target device at a time. Include configuration data and sequence loads in verification, not just executable images.

NASA’s Software Engineering Handbook discusses controlled uploads, checksum or memory comparison, avoiding self-modifying code, and detecting unintended memory changes. It warns that “Self-modifying code is error-prone as well as difficult to read, test, and maintain,” and says flight software intended to be modifiable in flight should be protected from unintended modification.

How do I prove hard real-time behavior on a small satellite?

A real-time claim needs evidence about worst-case response, not just a fast average or a successful nominal run. Analyze critical paths and bound interrupt latency, scheduling delay, system calls, synchronization and priority inversion, driver sections, and the execution time of the work itself. Then test the implementation on representative target hardware to validate assumptions and expose integration faults.

Evidence area What to establish Useful verification
Allocation and memory map No unintended runtime allocation; every memory region and reserve fits its ceiling. Review source and dependencies, allocator symbols and paths, linker map, stack sizing, and ownership/capacity records.
Schedulability and latency Critical tasks meet mission deadlines under the analyzed interrupt and workload assumptions. Response-time or schedulability analysis plus target timing measurements; bound interrupt masking, system calls, blocking, and priority inversion.
Worst-case load and faults Overload and error paths do not make essential functions miss deadlines or fail unpredictably. Exercise worst-case inputs, bus contention, retries, queue and pool exhaustion, and relevant error paths. Include thermal and voltage conditions where applicable to the mission.
Stacks, buffers, and corruption Capacity limits and detection/recovery behavior are adequate for the defined operating envelope. Measure stack and buffer high-water marks under stress and fault tests; review bounds and corruption detection. Observed maxima are evidence, not proof of all possible executions.
End-to-end behavior Commands and data behave correctly across the full flight-software stack. Test from OS through application, including driver, middleware, serialization, and telemetry paths. NASA’s smallsat knowledge base describes flight-software development and testing across that full stack.
Updates and recovery Images and configuration are validated, and recovery reaches the intended known-good or safe state. Verify image/version/checksum reporting, activation, interruption handling, and rollback or other recovery procedures.

Observed timing alone cannot establish a worst-case bound unless analysis and test coverage justify that conclusion. State the assumptions behind the guarantee—including workload, interrupt rates, target configuration, and relevant environmental conditions—and make clear which behaviors are bounded and which remain outside the claim.
