The fastest maintainable way to build a one-page business site in WordPress is to activate a block theme, create the home page as a front-page template in the Site Editor, and assemble clearly labeled sections for your offer, proof and contact details. Give each section an HTML anchor so the navigation jumps to it, keep one primary call to action visible, and test every link and form on a phone before publishing.

Decide whether one page fits the business
A one-page site puts the essential sales story on one URL. A visitor can move from the promise in the hero section to services, evidence and a contact action without opening several pages. That focus is useful for a consultant, local contractor, studio, coach or small service firm with a narrow offer and information that changes infrequently.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
It is not a requirement that every piece of content live on that page. Use the one-page home page as the hub and add separate WordPress Pages when the business needs detailed service explanations, multiple locations, legal notices, a blog, a careers area or substantial search coverage. WordPress Pages are intended for timeless, non-chronological information and can be added to the navigation.
- Choose one page when the offer is focused, the service area is clear and most visitors need the same short path to an inquiry.
- Add supporting pages when each service needs its own search-focused explanation, when regulations require lengthy terms or privacy information, or when a portfolio cannot be explained with a few examples.
- Keep the home page useful either way: it should state the value proposition and route visitors to the right action, not become a dumping ground for every detail.
Prepare the domain, hosting and content
Arrange hosting and a domain before constructing the site. The domain should be easy to say and type, and the hosting account must support a current WordPress installation, HTTPS and routine backups. Keep ownership credentials in the business’s name rather than an individual contractor’s account.
#1 Best Overall
Write the core content before arranging blocks. Gather the legal business name, service area, hours, phone number, email address, a short description of each service, proof you can substantiate, a privacy-policy URL and the response time you promise for inquiries. Collect properly licensed photos and record useful alternative text for each image.
Prepare one primary conversion action, such as “Request a quote,” “Book a consultation” or “Call now.” Secondary actions can support it, but a visitor should never have to decide among several equally prominent buttons in the first viewport.
Use a block theme and the Site Editor
A block theme uses blocks for all parts of a site, including navigation menus, the header, content and the footer. With a block theme active, Appearance → Editor opens the Site Editor, where you can modify global styles, templates, template parts and navigation from one interface.
In Appearance → Themes → Add New, filter the official Theme Directory for block themes, preview candidates and activate the one whose structure and support history suit the business. A preview confirms the general design, but it does not prove that a theme delivers good conversion, accessibility or performance; those qualities still need checking on the finished site.
| Selection criterion | What to inspect before committing | Why it matters on a one-page site |
|---|---|---|
| Site Editor support | Confirm that headers, footers, templates, navigation and styles are editable as blocks. | You can adjust the entire page without a separate proprietary builder. |
| Mobile layout controls | Check stacking, spacing, typography and button behavior at narrow widths. | Most one-page visitors will scroll through a long page on a phone. |
| Loading weight and asset control | Look for restrained scripts, sensible image sizes and controls for loading assets. | Large hero media or unnecessary effects can delay the first useful content. |
| Accessibility and keyboard behavior | Review heading order, contrast, focus indicators, link names and menu operation. | Anchor navigation and sticky headers must remain usable without a mouse. |
| Forms and integrations | Verify that your chosen forms plugin can send, store or route submissions as required. | A polished page is ineffective if inquiries disappear or cannot be followed up. |
| Updates and support | Check the theme’s update history, documentation and compatibility notes. | Maintenance is safer when the design is actively supported. |
| Migration options | Determine whether content remains in standard WordPress blocks if the theme changes. | Portable content reduces the cost of a future redesign. |
Build the front-page template
Open Appearance → Editor and create or edit the front-page template. A template is a collection of blocks that defines the document structure. You can use Group, Cover, Columns, Buttons, Heading, Image, Social Icons and Paragraph blocks, then save reusable arrangements as template parts when appropriate.
- In the Site Editor, open Templates and select the front-page template, or create one if the theme does not provide it.
- Set the page’s overall content width and a readable line length. Use a Group block to create full-width bands while keeping text inside a narrower inner container.
- Place the header template part first, followed by the hero and the remaining sections in the order described below.
- Use the Styles panel to establish one heading treatment, a readable body size, a restrained color palette, consistent spacing and a high-contrast button style.
- Save, then preview the template at desktop and mobile widths before adding decorative effects.
The front-page template approach keeps the entire one-page experience together while still allowing the theme’s header and footer to be reused. You do not need to create a separate page for every section.

Arrange sections in the order visitors need
1. Header and brand
Use the site title or logo, a short navigation menu and one primary call-to-action button. Keep the menu labels literal: “About,” “Services,” “Work” and “Contact” are easier to understand than clever alternatives. If the logo is an image, supply meaningful alternative text; if the business name is already adjacent as text, mark the duplicate image as decorative.
2. Hero: promise, audience and action
The hero should answer three questions immediately: what does the business do, who is it for and what should the visitor do next? A practical structure is a specific heading, a sentence that defines the audience or location, and one button such as “Request a quote.” Use a Cover block for a background image only when text remains readable at every crop and screen size. Compress the image and provide an appropriate focal point so the subject is not hidden behind the heading.
Keep the first viewport understandable without a scroll. Do not make visitors interpret a slideshow, wait for animation or choose among several competing offers before they know what the company provides.
3. About or positioning
Use a short credibility statement rather than a full company history. Explain the relevant experience, the service area and the type of customer served. Include a qualification, certification or operating detail only when the business can substantiate it. A location reference can help a local visitor decide quickly whether the service is available to them.
4. Services or packages
Present the main services in a consistent grid or stacked list. Describe outcomes and boundaries, not unexplained internal terminology. For each service, state what is included, who it suits and the next step. If prices vary by scope, explain what determines a quote instead of displaying a number that cannot be honored.
Keep the set short enough to scan. Move long specifications, technical documentation and extensive terms to supporting Pages and link to them from the relevant service description.

5. Proof
Choose evidence that matches the promise: a small selection of completed work, testimonials with permission, relevant certifications or client identities that the business is authorized to display. Add context such as the problem solved, the location or the deliverable. Never imply an endorsement, result or qualification that cannot be documented.
A portfolio image should have useful alternative text that identifies the subject and its relevance. A decorative background image needs empty alternative text so it does not interrupt screen-reader reading.

Put every practical route to a conversation in one section: phone, email, service area, hours and a form when lead capture is needed. Make phone and email values actual links so mobile visitors can tap them. Tell people what happens after submission, such as the expected response window or the information needed for a quote.
Add a forms plugin through the contact section when the business needs web inquiries. Configure a useful subject line, a destination mailbox that is monitored, a confirmation message and spam protection that does not create an inaccessible puzzle. Request only information needed to respond, and link to the privacy policy near the submit control.
7. Footer
Repeat the legal business name, contact details, social links that are actively maintained, copyright information and a link to the privacy policy. If the site has separate terms, accessibility or cookie information, place those links here rather than crowding the hero.
Connect menu items to sections
Anchor navigation works by pairing a menu URL that begins with a hash and a matching HTML Anchor value on the destination block.
- Select the Group or other block that contains the About section.
- In the block settings, open Advanced → HTML Anchor and enter
aboutwithout the hash. - Repeat for the other destinations, using unique values such as
services, workandcontact. Anchor values should be short, lowercase and free of spaces. - Open the Navigation block, edit the corresponding menu item and set its link to
#about,#services,#workor#contact. - Save the template and test each item from the top of the page and from a narrow viewport. Confirm that the heading is not hidden behind the header.
Use the same anchors for in-page buttons. A hero button can point to #contact, while a service-specific button can point to the contact section with text that explains the action.
Make a sticky header and smooth scrolling optional
To keep navigation available during a long scroll, wrap the header in a Group block and set its position to Sticky in the block’s layout or position controls. Check that the sticky element does not cover headings, shrink the usable viewport excessively or trap keyboard focus. On small screens, a compact header and a working menu toggle are more important than keeping every label visible.
Smooth scrolling can make a short jump feel connected, but it is not universally comfortable. If you add it, restrict the behavior to users who have not requested reduced motion. A CSS rule following the prefers-reduced-motion: no-preference condition preserves the browser’s accessibility preference. Users who request reduced motion should receive an immediate jump instead.
Set a coherent visual system
- Typography: choose one display treatment for headings and a highly readable body face. Establish a clear size hierarchy rather than styling every heading independently.
- Color: use a restrained palette and verify contrast for body text, buttons, links and text over images. Do not communicate a required state by color alone.
- Spacing: use repeatable vertical gaps between sections, headings, paragraphs and controls. Consistent rhythm makes a long page easier to scan.
- Buttons: use one high-contrast primary style and a quieter secondary style. Label each button with an action and destination.
- Images: correctly size and compress files, choose responsive image variants and avoid autoplay video or decorative motion that competes with the call to action.
- Content density: leave enough space around text without forcing visitors through oversized empty bands. A one-page layout should feel complete, not artificially lengthened.
Configure the contact form responsibly
Install a maintained forms plugin that meets the business’s delivery and storage requirements, then insert its form block or shortcode in the contact section according to the plugin’s documentation. Before publishing, verify all of the following:
- Required fields are marked visibly and programmatically.
- Labels remain associated with their inputs, and the keyboard can reach every control in a logical order.
- The confirmation message states whether the submission succeeded and what the visitor should do if no reply arrives.
- Notification emails use a monitored address and a reply-to value that does not encourage spoofing.
- Spam controls are understandable and do not block keyboard or assistive-technology users.
- The privacy notice explains what is collected, why it is needed, where it is stored and how a person can request help with their data.
A form is optional. If the business receives few inquiries or cannot reliably monitor submissions, a clearly labeled phone or email link may be more dependable than an unattended form.
Check the page before publishing
Preview both the front end and the editor at desktop and mobile widths. Use this release checklist:
- Every navigation item, hero button and service button reaches the intended anchor or page.
- Anchor headings remain visible below a sticky header and the URL hash does not create a confusing dead end when shared.
- Phone links open the dialer on a phone and email links open the intended mail application.
- The form sends a real test submission, displays a confirmation and delivers the notification to the monitored mailbox.
- Headings follow a logical order, links have descriptive names and keyboard focus is visible.
- Text and controls maintain sufficient contrast in every color combination, including text placed over images.
- Images have useful alternative text or are explicitly decorative, and large files are compressed and correctly sized.
- The first viewport identifies the business, audience and primary action without requiring animation or a scroll.
- The privacy-policy link, business details and service area are accurate, and any testimonial, logo or certification has permission and evidence behind it.
- The page is checked in a current desktop browser and on a real phone or an equivalent mobile viewport before launch.
Know when to expand beyond one page
Monitor the questions visitors still ask after launch. Add a dedicated Page when a service needs a long explanation, a location needs distinct information, a legal notice must be prominent or a blog is part of the marketing plan. Keep the home page’s summary and anchor navigation intact, then link to the detailed material from the relevant section. This preserves the quick one-page path for ready visitors while giving research-oriented visitors enough depth.
Best Value
There is no universal conversion rate or performance benchmark that proves a one-page WordPress site will outperform a multi-page site. The correct format depends on the amount of information, the audience’s decision process and the business’s ability to maintain accurate content. A focused page with clear proof and a working contact path is a better goal than a page count.
Troubleshoot common failures
The Site Editor is missing
The Site Editor is available when a block theme is active. Return to Appearance → Themes, activate a block theme and reopen Appearance → Editor. A classic theme may offer a different customization interface and will not expose the same template controls.
A menu link does nothing
Check that the destination block’s HTML Anchor contains the value without a hash and that the menu URL contains the same value with one hash. Remove spaces and duplicate IDs, save the template, clear any cache and test the link from a fresh browser window.
The heading is hidden after a jump
A sticky header may be covering the target. Reduce the header height, add suitable scroll spacing in the theme’s layout controls or adjust the section’s top spacing. Recheck keyboard focus and narrow screens after every change.
The form appears to work but no message arrives
Confirm the recipient address, inspect the plugin’s submission log if it provides one, and check the mailbox’s spam folder. Use the host’s authenticated mail configuration or another supported delivery method when ordinary server mail is unreliable. Always repeat a real submission after changing delivery settings.
