Kettle makers specify different mixtures, heating steps, soak times, and rinsing procedures, so there is no single safe recipe for every small electric kettle. Keep the base, cord, and plug dry, and follow the manual through the final rinse.
Why a kettle needs descaling
Limescale is mineral buildup associated with heating water. Fellow says it is composed primarily of calcium carbonate and that how quickly it builds up depends on the mineral concentration in your water source. The amount of scale and the recommended cleaning interval can therefore vary by household.

Start with the kettle’s printed manual or its manufacturer’s official support page. Check which descaler the model permits, the specified quantities and fill limits, whether to heat the solution, how long to let it stand, and how to rinse afterward.

- Check the model’s instructions. Confirm the permitted descaler, proportions, water quantity, heating or soaking method, and rinse procedure. Do not substitute another brand’s recipe just because it is for an electric kettle.
- Let the kettle cool and empty it. Fellow’s care guidance says to cool the kettle completely and pour out any remaining water before cleaning.
- Prepare and use only the approved solution. Follow the manual’s quantities and steps exactly. Do not exceed the kettle’s minimum or maximum fill limits.
- Empty the solution and complete the specified rinse. Some instructions call for multiple rinses; others specify fresh-water boil-and-drain cycles. Follow the steps for your model.
- Use gentle tools if residue remains. If the manufacturer permits manual cleaning, use a soft sponge or brush. Fellow warns that steel wool and abrasive brushes can damage the interior finish.
Never immerse the kettle, electrical base, power lead, or plug in water. Tefal explicitly warns against immersing those components.

Why vinegar and citric-acid recipes differ
Vinegar and citric acid both appear in official kettle-care instructions, but their quantities and processes are not interchangeable. These examples show why you should use the directions for your own model; they are not general-purpose recipes.
| Manufacturer guidance | Example method | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Fellow | Its guidance describes boiling either a half-vinegar, half-water mixture or 500 mL water with two spoonfuls of citric acid, then leaving the solution for at least 30 minutes. | Follow Fellow’s directions for the applicable kettle; the page does not make this a universal formula. |
| Tefal | For the cited Element guidance, one route is 500 mL of 8° white vinegar left for one hour without heating. Another is 25 g citric acid added to 500 mL boiled water and left for 15 minutes. | Tefal’s instructions also specify five or six rinses. Its directions call for a descaler formulated for plastic kettles when using that route. |
| Philips | Its support page gives model-specific directions, including leaving the cited vinegar solution overnight. | For the models covered by that guidance, Philips says not to use vinegar above 8% acetic acid. Check whether the page applies to your model. |
These differences include whether the solution is heated, how long it stands, and what concentration or amount is used. Do not combine the examples into a new recipe. Philips also directs users to package instructions for alternative descaling products; commercial descaler should be used only if your kettle’s guidance allows it and the product is compatible with the kettle’s materials.

Vinegar or citric acid: which should you choose?
Choose only an option listed in your kettle’s instructions. Fellow says both vinegar and citric acid are safe and effective for its guidance, and that citric acid is stronger and leaves less lingering scent than vinegar may leave. That comparison reflects Fellow’s advice, not a guarantee for every kettle or cleaning method.

If you use citric acid powder, use the amount and process specified for your model. Do not assume that every citric-acid product, concentration, or dose is suitable. Follow the package as well when the kettle manufacturer directs you to use a commercial product.

Rinsing and drying after descaling
Empty the used solution, then follow the manufacturer’s full rinse procedure. For the cited Element guidance, Tefal calls for five or six rinses. Philips and KitchenAid describe fresh-water boil-and-drain steps in their respective instructions. These procedures differ, so use the one for your kettle rather than treating any one rinse count or cycle as universal.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How often to descale
Use the interval recommended for your model and take your water hardness into account. Tefal suggests descaling at least monthly in its guidance and more often in very hard-water areas; that is not a universal schedule. KitchenAid likewise ties periodic descaling to water hardness.
