To check whether a Nintendo Switch game works on Nintendo Switch 2, search the exact title on Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility page, then read the result’s notes about known issues and controller requirements. Check again close to when you plan to play: Nintendo says testing and updates may change a game’s status.
How to check a game’s compatibility

Enter the game’s exact title in the search box. Nintendo advises checking compatibility before purchasing a Switch game with the intention of playing it on Switch 2.

Read the full result, including any notes. A game may be playable but still have an issue, or require a controller other than the included Joy-Con 2 controllers.

Check the entry again near purchase or play. Nintendo says future testing and updates may increase the number of supported titles, so a result is not necessarily permanent.

How to interpret the result
Playable does not always mean problem-free
Nintendo distinguishes general playability from known issues. Its compatibility issue document gives examples including slowdown, screen distortion, and behavior that differs from the Nintendo Switch version. Check the note attached to the title rather than treating a playable result as a guarantee that every feature behaves identically.
A missing search result is inconclusive
Nintendo’s UK checker says some titles available only as physical releases, or discontinued on Nintendo eShop, appear in search results only when testing found issues. A title that does not appear therefore is not proof of compatibility or incompatibility. For a third-party-published game, Nintendo advises contacting the publisher for specific compatibility information.

Controller and accessory requirements matter
Some games cannot be played with the included Joy-Con 2 controllers. Nintendo says original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con can be paired wirelessly for those cases. The distinction can matter for games and accessories such as Ring Fit Adventure’s Ring-Con or the Nintendo Labo Robot Kit: Joy-Con 2 controllers do not attach to those accessories. Read the game’s compatibility note before assuming the standard Switch 2 controllers will work.

Compatibility is different from a Switch 2 Edition
A compatible Nintendo Switch version and a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition are not the same thing. A Switch 2 Edition is a separate software edition that can add elements such as improved graphics or gameplay unique to Switch 2. Some eligible existing Switch games also offer a paid upgrade pack. Check the game’s listing to see whether you are looking at the original Switch game, a Switch 2 Edition, or an upgrade option; compatibility alone does not mean you receive the edition’s extra features.

Can you use a physical or digital copy?
Switch 2 accepts compatible Nintendo Switch game cards. For digital games, Nintendo uses virtual game cards that can be loaded or ejected across linked Switch and Switch 2 consoles. These formats explain how you access a game, but they do not replace checking whether that specific title is compatible. Confirm that you searched the full, exact game title, and inspect any notes attached to the result.

For a third-party-published title or a detail the listing does not resolve, ask the game’s publisher for title-specific compatibility information.

For a game that needs a particular controller or accessory, verify that requirement separately from whether the game itself is listed as playable.
