How to Deploy a Website From VS Code to a VPS: Remote-SSH, rsync, Nginx, and HTTPS

Deploy safely from VS Code to a Linux VPS with key-based SSH, Remote-SSH or rsync, a managed app process, Nginx, Certbot HTTPS, and a rollback plan.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The dependable path is: provision a Linux VPS, secure SSH access with a key and a non-root sudo user, connect from VS Code with Remote-SSH, install the application runtime, run the app under a process manager, and place Nginx and HTTPS in front of it. For a static or locally built site, build on your computer and copy the output with rsync instead. This guide shows both workflows, when each is appropriate, and how to recover when a deployment fails.

What a VS Code-to-VPS deployment actually does

VS Code is the development interface; the VPS is the computer that eventually serves your site. A production deployment has several separate layers:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Infrastructure: a reachable Linux virtual machine with an SSH service, a public address, storage, memory, and a firewall.
  2. Identity and access: an SSH key and a named account with sudo privileges, rather than routine work as root.
  3. Application: your source code, dependencies, build output, environment variables, and a process that stays running.
  4. Web edge: Nginx accepts browser traffic on ports 80 and 443, serves static files or forwards requests to the application, and handles TLS certificates.

Remote-SSH makes the VPS the execution environment. After the connection is established, terminal commands, debugging, and remote extensions operate on the server. A second approach keeps execution local: you build on your workstation and use rsync to transfer the resulting files. Neither method is universally better; the right choice depends on where you want dependencies and builds to run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Remote-SSH or local build plus rsync

Decision point Remote-SSH editing Local build plus rsync
Where dependencies run On the VPS. You run the package manager and framework tools in the remote folder. On your computer during development and build; the VPS receives the selected output and any production dependencies you deliberately install.
Large trees and repeated transfers There is little file transfer after the initial connection, but every edit is made against the network-mounted remote workspace. rsync sends only changed blocks and is the better fit for repeated bulk copies. Exclude generated or local-only directories such as node_modules and .git.
Build reproducibility The server is the build machine, so its runtime, operating-system packages, and lockfile determine the result. Pin versions and keep the build instructions in the repository. Your local toolchain produces the artifact. Reproducibility improves when the same runtime version and lockfile are used in CI or a clean build environment rather than an untracked laptop setup.
Debugging location Breakpoints, logs, and shell commands run beside the deployed process, which is useful for diagnosing server-only failures. You debug locally, then inspect server logs separately. This reduces the chance of changing production while experimenting.
Rollback Use version control or timestamped release directories on the VPS; a bad edit can affect the live tree immediately. Keep previous build archives or release directories and point the web server at the last known-good one.

For a small app that needs server-side debugging, start with Remote-SSH. For a static site or a front end whose output is a directory such as dist, local build plus rsync usually gives a cleaner release boundary. You can also combine them: use Remote-SSH for administration and logs while publishing immutable local builds.

VPS requirements and a safe baseline

Operating system and network

Choose a currently supported Linux distribution. A current Ubuntu LTS image is a common production starting point. The machine needs a public address or reachable private route, an SSH service listening on the port you intend to use, and DNS records that will eventually point your domain to that address. Confirm the provider allows inbound traffic for SSH, HTTP, and HTTPS.

For readers choosing a self-managed host, Antihost VPS offers Linux VPS instances with full root access, NVMe storage, and AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D processors, with 1 to 16 vCPUs and 2 to 64 GB of RAM. Its core regions are USA East, the Netherlands, and Ukraine.

Memory and CPU

VS Code lists 1 GB of RAM as a minimum for a remote host and recommends 2 GB of RAM and a 2-core CPU. Those figures are vendor requirements, not an independent performance benchmark. Your framework, build process, database, traffic, and concurrent services may require more. A build that exhausts memory can be terminated even when a tiny static site serves normally.

Remote-SSH prerequisites

The remote operating system must provide a working SSH server and the shell utilities VS Code expects. Typical prerequisites include Bash, tar, and either curl or wget. The account must be able to create files in its home directory so the VS Code Server can be installed there. If your distribution uses a restricted shell, missing utilities, or a proxy that blocks downloads, the extension may connect but fail while installing its server component.

Account and authentication policy

Create a named account with sudo access for administration and deploy through that account. The production baseline described in mainstream VPS setup guidance is key-based SSH authentication, disabling password-based login after the key has been tested, and applying firewall controls. Keep one already-open administrative session until the new policy has been verified in a second session.

Provision and secure the server

1. Create and test an SSH key locally

On your development computer, generate an Ed25519 key if you do not already have one:

ssh-keygen -t ed25519 -C '[email protected]'

Protect the private key with a passphrase. Copy only the public key, whose filename normally ends in .pub, to the account created by your VPS provider. If the provider offers a public-key field, use it during provisioning. Otherwise, an administrator can install it with a command such as:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
ssh-copy-id [email protected]

Some minimal systems do not include ssh-copy-id; in that case, append the public-key text to the account’s ~/.ssh/authorized_keys with the correct ownership and permissions.

2. Verify a non-root login before hardening

ssh [email protected]

Once connected, verify that sudo works:

sudo -v

Update the operating system and install the utilities your stack needs. On a Debian- or Ubuntu-based image, the pattern is:

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
sudo apt install nginx rsync

Package names and commands differ on other distributions. Install your language runtime from a maintained source appropriate to that distribution, and keep a note of the exact runtime version used by the project.

3. Apply firewall and SSH settings carefully

Allow the SSH port you actually use, plus web traffic. For a system using UFW, the sequence commonly looks like:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sudo ufw allow OpenSSH
sudo ufw allow 80/tcp
sudo ufw allow 443/tcp
sudo ufw enable
sudo ufw status

Before disabling password login, open a second terminal and prove that key authentication works. Then edit the SSH daemon configuration and set the equivalent of:

PasswordAuthentication no
PermitRootLogin no

Validate the configuration with your distribution’s SSH daemon test command, restart or reload the service, and reconnect in the second terminal. If the test fails, keep the original session open and restore the last working configuration. A firewall rule or SSH edit that is applied before a key is confirmed can lock you out.

Connect VS Code with Remote-SSH

1. Install the extension and define the host

Install Microsoft’s Remote – SSH extension in the local VS Code window. Open the Command Palette and choose Remote-SSH: Connect to Host…. Enter the same identity that worked in your terminal, for example [email protected], then select the Linux platform if VS Code asks.

For a repeatable setup, add a host alias to your local SSH configuration:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Host my-vps
    HostName your-server.example
    User deploy
    IdentityFile ~/.ssh/id_ed25519

Connect to my-vps from the Command Palette. VS Code installs its VS Code Server on the remote operating system and opens a new window whose status bar shows the remote host.

  • Ready to use, right out of the box; no external power adapter needed
  • Slim, compact size and lightweight aluminum housing for easy portability

2. Open the remote project folder

Choose File > Open Folder… in the remote window and select the directory where the application lives, such as /srv/myapp or a folder under the deploy user’s home directory. The Explorer, integrated terminal, language services, and most extensions now operate against that remote folder.

Check the terminal prompt and run:

hostname
pwd
whoami

The hostname and path should identify the VPS, and the user should be your non-root account. This simple check prevents accidentally running a package install on your laptop when you intended to change production.

3. Understand what runs where

The VS Code interface remains local, but commands typed into a Remote-SSH terminal execute on the VPS. Extensions that support remote operation are installed on the host and consume its CPU, memory, disk, and network. A terminal opened outside the remote window is still local. Keep that distinction in mind when generating keys, building assets, or inspecting environment variables.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common Remote-SSH failures

  • Connection refused or timed out: verify the hostname, public address, SSH port, provider firewall, and VPS status.
  • Authentication failure: test the same alias with ssh -v my-vps; check the selected private key and the server’s authorized_keys.
  • Server installation stops: confirm Bash, tar, and curl or wget exist, that the account can write to its home directory, and that the host has outbound access and free disk space.
  • Folder opens read-only: inspect ownership and permissions. Give the deploy user ownership of the application directory rather than editing everything as root.

Use SSHFS for browsing or rsync for publishing

SSHFS: convenient individual-file access

SSHFS presents a remote directory through SSH so you can browse and edit individual files from a local interface. VS Code documentation describes it as convenient for individual-file access. It is useful for a quick configuration change or inspection, but it still depends on network latency and is not a substitute for a release process. Use Remote-SSH when you want terminals and extensions to execute on the VPS; use SSHFS when you mainly need a mounted view.

rsync: efficient bulk synchronization

Build or prepare the files locally, then synchronize only what belongs in the release. A typical application copy is:

rsync -az --delete
  --exclude '.git'
  --exclude 'node_modules'
  ./ [email protected]:/srv/myapp/

--delete removes destination files that no longer exist in the source. That keeps a deployment exact, but it can erase manually created server files. Perform a dry run first:

rsync -azn --delete --exclude '.git' --exclude 'node_modules' ./ [email protected]:/srv/myapp/

For a front-end build, synchronize only the generated directory:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
rsync -az --delete dist/ [email protected]:/var/www/example/

Do not copy a workstation’s node_modules blindly across operating systems or CPU architectures. Either install production dependencies on the VPS with the lockfile or build in an environment that matches the server.

Install the runtime, dependencies, and application

Use the project’s lockfile

From the remote project directory, install the runtime required by the framework and use the repository’s lockfile. For a Node.js project, npm ci performs a clean install when a compatible lockfile is present; a project may instead document another package manager. Keep development-only packages out of a production install when the framework supports that mode.

Build where your chosen workflow says to build

With Remote-SSH, run the project’s build command on the VPS. With local publishing, run the build locally and rsync its output. The exact command is framework-specific. The official VS Code remote tutorial demonstrates a Node.js Express application started remotely with npm start; another stack requires its own documented start and build commands. Do not substitute a development server for the production command without checking its binding address, logging, and restart behavior.

Keep configuration and secrets outside the repository

Set production values through the process manager, an environment file readable only by the deploy account, or the hosting platform’s secret mechanism. Typical values include the listening port, database connection, session secret, and public base URL. Never commit private keys, passwords, or a production .env file. After setting variables, start the application manually once and verify that it listens only where intended, normally on localhost when Nginx is the public entry point.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run the app under a process strategy

A process started in an SSH terminal normally ends when the session closes. Use a supervisor appropriate to the stack, such as systemd, so the service can restart after a crash and the VPS can start it after reboot. A minimal systemd unit illustrates the shape:

[Unit]
Description=My web application
After=network.target

[Service]
User=deploy
WorkingDirectory=/srv/myapp
Environment=NODE_ENV=production
ExecStart=/usr/bin/node server.js
Restart=on-failure

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

Adjust the runtime path, entry point, user, and environment for your application. Then reload units, enable the service, start it, and inspect its status:

sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now myapp
sudo systemctl status myapp
sudo journalctl -u myapp -n 100 --no-pager

If the project specifically requires an npm script, use the absolute path to the correct npm or framework launcher and confirm it does not spawn an unmanaged child process. Record the service name and port; Nginx must forward to the same port.

Put Nginx in front of the application

Reverse-proxy an app server

Nginx and the application process are separate production concerns. Nginx handles public HTTP connections while the app listens on a private local port such as 3000. Create a server block similar to this and replace the domain and port:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
server {
    listen 80;
    server_name example.com www.example.com;

    location / {
        proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:3000;
        proxy_http_version 1.1;
        proxy_set_header Host $host;
        proxy_set_header X-Real-IP $remote_addr;
        proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for;
        proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Proto $scheme;
    }
}

Enable the site according to your distribution’s Nginx layout, remove or disable the default site if it would win the host match, and confirm the app responds locally before testing through the domain:

curl http://127.0.0.1:3000
sudo nginx -t
sudo systemctl reload nginx

Run nginx -t before every reload or restart. If the test reports an error, fix the configuration first; do not reload a known-invalid file.

Serve a static site directly

For a generated static site, Nginx can serve the build directory without an application server:

server {
    listen 80;
    server_name example.com www.example.com;
    root /var/www/example;
    index index.html;

    location / {
        try_files $uri $uri/ /index.html;
    }
}

The fallback to index.html is useful for single-page applications whose client-side router owns deep links. For a traditional site, use the fallback behavior your framework expects. Ensure the Nginx worker can read the directory and its files without granting write access to the web server.

Add HTTPS and verify renewal

Point the domain’s A or AAAA record at the VPS and make sure port 80 is reachable before requesting a certificate. Certbot can configure Nginx for a domain; a common command is:

sudo certbot --nginx -d example.com -d www.example.com

Follow the prompts for the email address, terms, and HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect. The exact installation command for Certbot depends on the Linux distribution and its package policy, so use the supported package source for your image.

After issuance, test the renewal path rather than assuming it works:

sudo certbot renew --dry-run

Keep ports 80 and 443 allowed through both the VPS firewall and any provider-level firewall. A certificate does not fix an application that is down, a wrong Nginx server name, or a DNS record pointing elsewhere. Check the certificate from an external browser and inspect Nginx logs when a domain still serves the default page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A repeatable deployment and rollback runbook

  1. Check the target: connect to the intended host, run hostname, and confirm the release branch or commit.
  2. Build and test: run the documented build and test commands in the selected environment. Do not publish an unverified working tree.
  3. Stage a release: copy to a new timestamped directory such as /srv/releases/2026-10-14-1200 rather than overwriting the current release in place.
  4. Install production dependencies: use the lockfile and the runtime version required by the project.
  5. Switch the active path: update a symlink such as /srv/myapp/current to the new release, or synchronize the chosen static directory after a dry run.
  6. Restart or reload the app: use the process manager, then inspect status and recent logs.
  7. Validate from both sides: request the local app port and the public HTTPS URL; check a normal page, a deep link, a form or API call, and any health endpoint your app provides.
  8. Record the release: note the commit, runtime version, migration result, and deployment time.

If the new release fails, point current back to the previous directory and restart the service. For database migrations, plan reversibility separately: reverting application files does not automatically undo a schema change. Keep at least one known-good release until the new one has passed its observation period.

Troubleshoot by symptom

Symptom Checks and corrective action
VS Code connects, then disconnects during setup Confirm Bash, tar, and curl or wget; check free disk space, outbound connectivity, and permission to write the remote VS Code Server files.
Permission denied while editing or syncing Check ls -ld on each parent directory, correct ownership with an administrator, and avoid making the entire project root writable by every user.
Files disappeared after rsync If --delete was used, compare the source and destination and restore from version control or the previous release. Use a dry run before the next synchronization.
Nginx returns 502 Bad Gateway Check the process-manager status and logs, request the upstream with curl http://127.0.0.1:3000, and make the proxy_pass port match the app’s actual listening port.
Nginx shows 404 or the old static page Verify the root path, the deployed build directory, file permissions, the selected server_name, and whether a default server block is taking the request.
HTTPS issuance fails Check that DNS resolves to this VPS, port 80 is reachable from the public internet, the requested names appear in server_name, and no other service is intercepting the challenge.
The app works over localhost but not through the domain Validate Nginx with sudo nginx -t, reload it, inspect access and error logs, and test the domain’s DNS and firewall path separately from the app.
Changes are not visible Confirm the correct host and release directory, rerun the build if assets are generated, inspect the active symlink, reload Nginx when its configuration changed, and account for browser or application caching.

Self-managed VPS or managed hosting?

A self-managed VPS gives you direct SSH access and control over Nginx, runtimes, services, and firewall rules. The trade-off is that you are responsible for operating-system updates, intrusion hardening, backups, monitoring, certificate renewal, and recovery. Managed hosting moves some of that work to the provider and can be a better fit when you do not want to maintain a Linux server, but it may restrict root access, custom Nginx settings, runtime versions, or scaling controls.

Factor Self-managed VPS Managed hosting
Server maintenance You patch the OS, SSH service, Nginx, runtime, and supporting services. The provider handles an agreed portion of maintenance; read the service boundary carefully.
Access Usually full SSH and sudo control, subject to the provider’s policy. Often an application-level console or restricted SSH; root access may not be available.
Nginx and runtime control You choose versions, modules, ports, process managers, and proxy rules. You use the platform’s supported versions and configuration surface.
Scaling You resize or add instances, configure load balancing, and design failover. Scaling controls may be simpler, but options and limits vary by provider.
Cost and effort Infrastructure pricing can be lower, but your time and operational tooling are part of the real cost. You pay for abstraction and support, potentially reducing maintenance time.

Choose a self-managed VPS when you need operating-system-level control and are prepared to maintain it. Choose managed hosting when reducing server work is worth giving up some control and accepting the platform’s runtime and deployment model.

Production checklist

  • Current supported Linux image selected; memory and CPU match the build and traffic.
  • SSH key tested in a second session; routine work uses a named sudo account, not root.
  • Password login and direct root login disabled only after key access was confirmed.
  • Firewall permits the chosen SSH port, HTTP, and HTTPS, with no unnecessary services exposed.
  • Remote-SSH host identity verified with hostname, pwd, and whoami.
  • Runtime version, lockfile, build command, and process-manager unit are documented.
  • Secrets are outside source control and readable only by the service that needs them.
  • Nginx configuration passes nginx -t before reload.
  • Domain DNS resolves to the VPS; HTTPS certificate issuance succeeds and certbot renew --dry-run passes.
  • Logs, backups, release directories, and a tested rollback path exist before the first real outage.
