To deploy a Node.js app on GoDaddy, choose between GoDaddy’s managed Node.js Hosting interface and its separate Hosting API. The interface lets you upload a ZIP or connect GitHub, test a preview, then publish. The API supports an automated ZIP-based workflow, but requires a scoped Personal Access Token, asynchronous status checks, and attaching a web hosting subscription before publication. Their steps and requirements are not interchangeable.
Choose the GoDaddy deployment route
| What differs | Managed Node.js Hosting | Hosting API |
|---|---|---|
| Input and workflow | Upload a ZIP or connect a GitHub repository and branch, then import and deploy in the GoDaddy interface. GoDaddy’s ZIP instructions and GitHub instructions describe the UI path. | Call the API to create an app, import a ZIP, attach a subscription, deploy, poll operation status, and retrieve app status and URLs. See the Hosting API deployment guide. |
| Credentials and automation | Use the dashboard controls; the documented flow does not call for API credentials. | Use a Personal Access Token with the required scopes and poll asynchronous operations. The Hosting API became available on September 29, 2026, according to its changelog. |
| Preview and publication | Inspect the preview URL, then select “Publish Now” when satisfied. | Submit deployment, poll until operations complete, then verify the published variant and environment URLs. The publish URL is not live until publication. |
| Subscription | GoDaddy’s August 20, 2026 launch post describes a free preview tier; confirm current terms in your account. | Attach a valid web hosting subscription before publishing. GoDaddy says, “This operation is required before you can publish a Node.js app to production.” See the app-to-plan instructions. |
| Updates and diagnostics | GitHub users can pull updates through the documented action; the product also lists settings, runtime logs, a file manager, and database tools. | Import and publish new code to the existing app without creating a new app or reattaching the plan. Use app status and logs to diagnose failures. |
GoDaddy’s launch post says Node.js Hosting went generally available on August 12, 2026. It describes the free preview tier as supporting up to two apps and a 100 MB ZIP limit; these are dated vendor claims, not permanent guarantees. Prepare the application
The following ZIP requirements are documented for the API route. GoDaddy’s Help overview separately describes a root package.json, a start script, and binding to the provided port for its managed interface. Check the instructions for your chosen route rather than assuming every API package requirement applies identically to the UI product.
Set up the API ZIP
Put package.json at the ZIP root. GoDaddy’s application requirements call for non-empty name and version fields and both build and start scripts. The platform runs npm run build during deployment and npm start to start the app. If no compilation is needed, the build script can be a no-op; projects such as Next.js, NestJS, or TypeScript applications need an actual build command. Specify a Node.js version using engines, as GoDaddy recommends.

Make the server deployable
- Listen on
process.env.PORT. A hardcoded port will not receive traffic on the API platform. - Put packages needed at runtime in
dependencies. GoDaddy says it installs onlydependenciesbefore build and start. - Include source files and package manifests, but exclude
node_modules. - Keep secret-bearing
.envfiles out of the ZIP. Configure secrets through the available environment settings for your route.
Deploy through managed Node.js Hosting
- Choose an input. Upload a ZIP using the GoDaddy Node.js Hosting workflow, or choose “Connect GitHub,” then select the repository and branch you want deployed. GoDaddy describes a 100 MB ZIP maximum in its August 2026 launch post; confirm the current limit before uploading.
- Import and deploy. Select “Import & Deploy” to start the deployment. If it fails, review the build log and the app suggestions GoDaddy presents.
- Test the preview. Open the preview URL and check the app’s key pages and functions before making it public.
- Publish when ready. Select “Publish Now” after the preview is satisfactory.
For later GitHub changes, the Help instructions include a pull-from-GitHub update action. ZIP and GitHub workflows are documented separately: ZIP workflow and GitHub workflow.
Deploy through the Hosting API
This route is for scripted or integrated deployments. Its writes are asynchronous: keep each returned operation or deployment identifier and check its status until it reaches COMPLETED or FAILED. Do not treat a successful request to start an operation as proof that the deployment or publication finished.

- Create an app. Authenticate with a Personal Access Token bearing
hosting.application:create,hosting.application:read,hosting.source:write,hosting.deployment:execute, andhosting.subscription:write. - Upload the ZIP. Import the prepared application source and retain the operation identifier returned by the API.
- Attach a web hosting subscription. The API route requires a valid subscription attached to the app before production publishing. Follow GoDaddy’s subscription attachment instructions.
- Submit deployment and poll. Start deployment and poll the returned operation or deployment status until it completes or fails. GoDaddy’s troubleshooting guidance recommends a 2–5 second interval for status checks rather than a tight polling loop: API walkthrough and troubleshooting.
- Verify publication. Inspect the
PUBLISHvariant in app status, then retrieve the app record to obtain its environment URLs. The publish URL is not live before publication completes.
For a later release, import new code and publish it to the existing app; the documented API flow does not require creating a replacement app or attaching the subscription again. See the Hosting API guide for request details.

Managed interface: build or import failure
- Review the build log and follow the app-specific diagnostic suggestions shown in GoDaddy Help.
- Check that the ZIP contains the application at the expected root and that its package manifest and scripts are usable.
- For GitHub, verify that you imported the intended repository and branch.

API: authentication, rate limits, or a stalled job
- A
401can result from an expired or revoked token or missing required scopes; check the token and scope list before retrying. - A
429indicates rate limiting. Avoid tight polling loops and use the recommended 2–5 second interval for status checks. - If an operation fails, inspect its status and error details. GoDaddy associates failed imports with malformed ZIP structure or build failures.
API: published variant is not running
Allow the rollout window, then check app status and logs for startup errors. Correct the underlying issue—such as a server that does not bind to the runtime port—and upload and publish again. GoDaddy’s deployment walkthrough and troubleshooting guidance cover these checks.
