How to Check Whether a Windows 11 Update Is Causing Your PC Problems

Use Update history and Microsoft’s notes for your exact Windows 11 version to assess whether an update may be related to a PC problem—and what to try next.

Compare when the problem began with Windows Update history, then check Microsoft’s notes for your exact Windows 11 version. A close match can make an update a plausible cause, but timing alone does not prove it: a driver, app, or hardware issue may have started at the same time.

1. Note what is going wrong and when it began

Write down the symptom—such as crashes, freezes, slow performance, a device or app failing, or Windows not starting—and the approximate time it first appeared. Note whether it began immediately after an update and restart or only later. This gives you a timeline to compare; it does not establish the cause.

2. Compare the symptom date with Update history

  1. Open Start > Settings > Windows Update > Update history.
  2. Find updates installed around the time the problem began. Note their dates and the update identifier or type displayed.
  3. Compare those dates with your symptom timeline. Windows Update history shows which updates were installed and when, so it can establish chronology—not diagnose whether an update caused a problem. See Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ.

3. Check the known issues for your Windows version

Microsoft’s update notes and known-issue information are specific to Windows versions and updates, and can change over time. Check the version installed on your PC before looking for a match.

  1. Open Settings > System > About, then look under Windows specifications for Version.
  2. Alternatively, type winver in taskbar search and open the result.
  3. Find Microsoft’s update history or release-health page for that Windows version. Check the notes for the update you identified and for symptoms like yours. Microsoft explains that its version update pages include update details, release notes, and known issues in its Windows 11, version 26H1 update history.

A documented issue that matches both the update and the symptom is useful evidence, but it still does not confirm what happened on your individual PC. Likewise, the absence of a matching issue on Microsoft’s page does not rule out a local driver, app, or hardware problem. The 26H1 page is specific to that release; its availability and issue notes should not be generalized to other Windows 11 versions.

4. Try a lower-impact fix first

Before removing an update or using recovery options, try the Windows troubleshooter that matches the problem and note whether it changes anything. Microsoft recommends starting with less disruptive recovery options. Back up important files before recovery actions that might cause data loss; an external USB drive is one possible backup destination, not a requirement for checking Update history, troubleshooting, or uninstalling an update. See Microsoft’s recovery options overview.

5. If the evidence points to a recent update

If Windows still starts and the problem persists after lower-impact troubleshooting, you can consider uninstalling the suspected update. Microsoft warns that some updates cannot be removed. Removing a security update can leave the device without its fix, so understand that risk before proceeding. Microsoft’s uninstall instructions advise Windows 11 users to try reinstalling the current Windows version first.

When Windows starts

  1. Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates.
  2. Select the update you suspect and choose Uninstall, if that option is available.

Microsoft’s Fix problems using Windows Update option, when available, reinstalls the current Windows version to repair system files and components while preserving apps, files, and settings. Keep the PC connected to power and the internet during the process. The option may not appear on a work- or school-managed PC or on a Windows version that is not sufficiently updated.

When Windows will not start

Use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates, then follow the available uninstall option. Microsoft’s instructions identify the latest quality update route; do not assume that every device presents identical labels or options. If BitLocker is enabled, you may need the recovery key to use most WinRE options. See Microsoft’s recovery options overview and update uninstall instructions.

6. Distinguish an update rollback from going back to a previous Windows version

Uninstalling an update is not the same as going back after a Windows version upgrade. Microsoft’s recovery overview says the “go back to the previous version” option is available for 10 days after upgrading; the precise screen and availability can depend on the device. Resetting or reinstalling Windows is a separate, more disruptive recovery path, with different effects on files and settings. Check the stated effects of an option and back up important files before using it.

How to weigh what you find

  • Windows starts: Settings provides the update-history and uninstall paths; if it does not start, use WinRE.
  • Type of change: A quality update and a Windows version upgrade have different recovery paths.
  • Evidence: A matching version-specific Microsoft known issue strengthens the update hypothesis; chronology alone does not prove causation.
  • Availability and impact: Some updates cannot be uninstalled, and repair or recovery choices vary by device and Windows version. Prefer less disruptive steps first.
  • Security: Removing a security update can remove its protection. Consider that trade-off before uninstalling it.
