For a managed AWS live-streaming pipeline, send your source to AWS Elemental MediaLive for real-time encoding, use AWS Elemental MediaPackage when you need packaging or related origin features, and put Amazon CloudFront in front to deliver the stream to viewers. If MediaLive can already produce every format your players need, AWS documents AWS Elemental MediaStore as an alternative origin.
How the AWS live-streaming pipeline works
A live stream needs a source contribution path, real-time encoding, an origin that makes the output available, and a delivery path to viewers. AWS Media Services cover parts of that chain; CloudFront distributes the resulting stream. The exact configuration depends on the source, target devices, latency needs, resilience requirements, and the formats those devices can play.

- Contribute the source. Send live video from an upstream system to AWS. AWS Elemental MediaLive’s workflow wizard supports several input paths, including MediaConnect, an AWS Elemental Link device, RTMP from a mobile phone or webcam, and an MP4 file in Amazon S3 or on an HTTP server. These are documented wizard options, not an exhaustive list of every MediaLive configuration. AWS also describes upstream systems that provide content such as HLS or transport streams.
- Encode with MediaLive. MediaLive ingests the source and encodes it in real time. Configure output groups and formats for the downstream service that will receive them. An adaptive-bitrate output can provide renditions for different player and network conditions.
- Package or originate the output. Send the encoded output to MediaPackage when you need packaging for different playback formats or features such as DRM. If MediaLive already produces all the formats your target devices need and you do not need MediaPackage’s functions, AWS documents MediaStore as a scalable origin alternative.
- Distribute with CloudFront. Configure the MediaPackage endpoint or MediaStore container as the CloudFront origin. Set cache behaviors to match the actual manifest and media-segment paths, then test playback through the CDN using the players and devices you intend to support.
AWS’s live reference architecture uses two inputs processed in parallel, packages adaptive-bitrate output, and uses CloudFront for delivery. That is a high-availability design choice, not a guarantee that every single-channel deployment is redundant by default.

Choose an input and contribution path
Start with the signal you can reliably deliver, rather than assuming you need a particular camera or encoder. The MediaLive workflow wizard includes paths for a MediaConnect flow, an Elemental Link hardware device, an RTMP feed from a phone or webcam, and an MP4 source stored in S3 or served over HTTP. A webcam is therefore one possible source, not a universal requirement.

For other contribution setups, check what protocol and format the upstream system can actually provide. AWS describes MediaLive workflows involving source content such as HLS or transport streams. The source format, network path, and receiving input configuration must agree; a source that cannot reach the configured input cannot be encoded into a working stream.
Configure encoding outputs for the destination
MediaLive’s output group and protocol choices should be driven by the next service in the chain. AWS documents HLS delivery to MediaPackage over HTTPS, RTMP output to a compatible server, and SRT caller or listener operation. MediaConnect is one example of a downstream system that can handle encrypted SRT.

There is no single resolution, bitrate, or keyframe interval that can be prescribed for every event from the available AWS guidance: those settings depend on the source, selected encoding profile, target playback formats, and the constraints of the receiving system. Choose an output profile supported by the destination and target players, then validate that the resulting stream plays correctly over the expected connections. Do not assume that selecting a protocol alone resolves compatibility; the receiving service and player must support the output format too.

Decide whether to use MediaPackage or MediaStore
| Choice | Use it when | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| AWS Elemental MediaPackage | You need packaging across playback formats, related origin capabilities, or DRM support. | For new MediaLive-to-MediaPackage workflows, AWS recommends the MediaPackage v2 CMAF Ingest output group. AWS identifies LL-HLS support and recommends this path for new workflows, including glass-to-glass low-latency delivery. |
| AWS Elemental MediaStore | MediaLive already generates every format required by the intended devices and you do not need MediaPackage’s packaging functions. | Configure CloudFront and its cache behavior for the actual stored output and paths. |
MediaPackage v2’s documented processing flow has an upstream encoder send HLS using AWS Signature Version 4 authorization, after which MediaPackage serves packaged output over HTTPS. AWS’s reference live solution uses HLS, DASH, and CMAF endpoints. The format set should reflect your target player and device mix, not a presumption that one format works everywhere.

Choose delivery formats and configure CloudFront
HLS, DASH, and CMAF are central to AWS’s reference live solution. AWS’s broader CloudFront guidance also describes Microsoft Smooth Streaming as a common format. Select the formats your actual viewers’ devices and players can use, and verify playback at the endpoint rather than relying only on a successful encode.
CloudFront cache behaviors need to match the manifests and segments produced by the origin. AWS’s guidance gives examples such as .m3u8 manifest patterns, .ts transport-stream segments, and .mp4 CMAF segments. These are examples, not universal path rules: configure behaviors against the endpoint’s actual output paths and formats. Manifests and media segments may need distinct behavior, so test both through CloudFront.

Plan for latency, resilience, and origin access
Low latency
AWS recommends the MediaPackage v2 CMAF Ingest output group for new MediaLive-to-MediaPackage workflows and identifies LL-HLS support. That recommendation does not establish a guaranteed end-to-end delay: glass-to-glass latency depends on the complete source, encoding, packaging, CDN, player, and playback configuration. Validate latency with the entire intended path.

Restrict access to the origin
In AWS’s reference solution, CloudFront uses a CDN Identifier header so MediaPackage can authorize requests arriving through CloudFront; the identifier is stored in AWS Secrets Manager. This is an example of a secured reference deployment, not an automatic property of every DIY configuration. Configure origin authorization and secret handling deliberately, and verify that viewers can reach the stream through the intended delivery path without exposing an unintended origin route.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Estimate cost and check regional availability
Cost varies with the encoding channel, input and output configuration, packaging and origination, stream duration, bitrate ladder, viewer traffic, cache behavior, and viewer geography. Check current AWS pricing for the exact region and design before deployment. AWS notes that MediaLive, MediaPackage, and MediaConnect are available only in specific AWS Regions; if MediaConnect supplies the input, the solution must use the same Region as that flow. Check current regional service availability when choosing the design and again when deploying.
AWS’s deployment guide gives scenario estimates, not generally applicable current prices: approximately $69.74 for a one-hour event with about 1,000 viewers at an SD-540p profile in US East (N. Virginia), including approximately $2.50 for encoding and packaging and $67.24 for distribution; and approximately $1,505.60 for a one-hour event with about 10,000 viewers at the guide’s HD-1080p profile. The guide’s scenarios depend on specified bitrates and traffic assumptions, including the assumption that viewers consume the highest bitrate, exclude test-player storage, and may no longer reflect current prices. Use them only as examples of how audience delivery can affect the bill, not as a quote for your stream.

Deploy and test the complete path
- List your requirements. Record the source type, target devices and players, required playback formats, latency expectations, event duration, expected audience, and whether parallel source feeds are needed.
- Confirm service and region fit. Check whether the selected MediaLive, MediaPackage, or MediaConnect components are available in the intended Region. Keep MediaConnect in the same Region as the flow it provides to the solution.
- Set up the source and MediaLive input. Choose a documented contribution path that matches your source and configure the input and encoding workflow for that path.
- Choose the output group and origin. Match MediaLive’s output protocol to the receiver. For a new MediaLive-to-MediaPackage workflow, evaluate the recommended MediaPackage v2 CMAF Ingest output group; use MediaStore when your encoded formats already meet the target devices’ needs and you do not require MediaPackage.
- Configure CloudFront. Point it at the selected origin, align cache behaviors with manifest and segment paths, and configure origin access controls appropriate to the deployment.
- Run an end-to-end playback test. Check the manifest and segments through CloudFront, test on the intended player and device set, and confirm that any authorization, cache behavior, and fallback design works as configured.
Troubleshoot common failures
- MediaLive does not receive a usable source: check that the selected input matches the contribution path and that the upstream system is actually providing the expected content or protocol. For MediaConnect input, verify the Region requirement.
- The encoder is running but the player cannot start playback: confirm that the output format is supported by the player and that the output group matches the receiving service. Test the origin endpoint before narrowing the problem to CloudFront.
- The manifest loads but video segments fail: inspect the segment URL patterns and CloudFront cache behaviors. Manifest and media paths may need separate matching behaviors; compare the configured paths with the origin’s actual output, including extensions such as
.tsor.mp4. - CloudFront requests are rejected by MediaPackage: check the origin authorization configuration and the CDN Identifier header expected by the MediaPackage endpoint. In the AWS reference design, that identifier is stored in Secrets Manager; ensure the deployed value and CloudFront configuration agree.
- Playback works on one device but not another: check the device’s player and format support, then validate the formats and renditions produced for that target. Avoid assuming a single delivery format covers every device.
- The stream is not as low-latency as expected: verify the complete ingest-to-player path and the selected packaging and player settings. LL-HLS support is documented for the recommended MediaPackage v2 path, but AWS’s cited guidance does not specify a universal glass-to-glass delay.
- A single source interruption stops the event: review whether the design needs parallel input feeds. AWS’s two-feed reference architecture is a resilience pattern that must be deliberately implemented; it is not implied by a basic single-feed configuration.
Or let it run in the cloud
The AWS workflow above is for delivering a live source such as a camera or contribution feed. If instead you want to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded prerecorded videos, StreamNeo is a different, narrower option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera or send to platforms other than YouTube.
- Nothing has to stay on at home: the stream runs in the cloud, so your computer and home connection can be off.
- Videos stream as uploaded, with no re-encode, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot.
- StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required.
The monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
