To delete a conversation, use the chat’s own Delete command; do not confuse it with archiving or turning off model improvement. In ChatGPT, a deleted chat disappears from your account immediately and is scheduled for permanent system deletion within 30 days, subject to de-identification and legal or security exceptions. Claude lets consumer users delete one conversation, select several conversations, or permanently delete the entire account. Choose what you actually want to remove
“Delete my history” can mean several different actions. Pick the narrowest one that meets your goal so you do not erase more than intended. A menu item that removes a chat from view is not necessarily a deletion request, and an account setting that changes model-improvement use does not retroactively erase stored conversations.

Deletion is also different from logging out, uninstalling an app, clearing browser cookies, or removing a shortcut. Those actions affect your device or session, not the vendor’s saved account data.

How to delete ChatGPT conversations
Delete one ChatGPT conversation
- Open ChatGPT and display your chat history.
- Find the conversation you want to remove. Confirm that you are in the intended personal account or workspace.
- Open that conversation’s more-options menu.
- Choose Delete.
- Read the confirmation prompt and confirm the deletion.
The chat should disappear from your account view immediately. OpenAI says deleted conversations are then scheduled for permanent deletion from its systems within 30 days. That schedule has exceptions: information already de-identified and disassociated from your account may not be attributable to you, and OpenAI may retain information longer when required for security or legal obligations.
A deleted ChatGPT conversation cannot be restored through ChatGPT or OpenAI Support. If you might need the content later, save the information you are allowed to retain before confirming deletion. Saving a copy elsewhere does not change what ChatGPT retains; it simply gives you a reference after the account copy is gone.
Delete all ChatGPT conversations
- Open Settings.
- Go to Data controls.
- Choose Delete all chats.
- Review the confirmation, including the scope of the action, then continue to approve the bulk deletion.
This command is different from deleting your OpenAI account. It targets the chats covered by the data-control setting while leaving the account itself in place. The exact set of controls can vary by account and workspace. If you have several workspaces or accounts, repeat the check in each one rather than assuming one bulk action covers all of them.

Archive instead of deleting
Use ChatGPT’s Archive option when you only want a conversation out of the sidebar. Archiving hides the chat from the usual history view but retains it in your account. It is reversible in the sense that you can manage archived chats later; it is not a deletion request.
Regular and archived conversations remain saved until you delete them or an applicable workspace policy removes them. Do not archive a chat when your objective is to have it removed from stored account data. Archiving can be appropriate for decluttering, separating projects, or keeping a reference that you may need again.
Deleting a chat does not delete a separately saved Library file
ChatGPT can store uploaded or created files in Library, separately from the conversation that used them. OpenAI’s Help Center states: “Deleting a chat does not delete a file saved separately in Library.” If the file itself should also be removed, open Library and delete that copy independently. Deleting the conversation alone is not enough.
This is an important two-step check after deleting a chat that contained a document, image, spreadsheet, or other upload. Look for the item in Library rather than assuming that a disappearing conversation means every associated object disappeared. The file and the conversation have separate controls and may have different availability depending on your account.
Turning off “Improve the model for everyone” is not deletion
In ChatGPT, the Improve the model for everyone control is found under Settings > Data controls when available. Turning it off controls whether eligible new conversations are used to improve models; it does not delete or hide conversations already saved in your history. To remove existing chats, use the individual or bulk-delete controls described above.

What you can change may depend on whether the account is personal or managed by an organization. A workspace administrator can impose settings that you cannot override. If the setting is absent, that does not mean chats are automatically deleted; it means the account’s available controls differ.
Use Temporary Chat for future one-off conversations
Temporary Chats do not appear in chat history while they remain temporary and do not create or update memories during that period. OpenAI may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes. Temporary Chat is therefore a forward-looking privacy control, not a way to erase an ordinary chat retroactively.
If you save a Temporary Chat, it becomes a regular chat governed by your account settings. Treat it as saved data from that point onward. Before sharing sensitive material, verify that the temporary indicator is active; starting an ordinary chat and deleting it later has a different lifecycle.
Deleting the entire ChatGPT account
Account deletion is broader than clearing chat history: it is a permanent request to close the account and remove access to its associated data. The account-deletion control and confirmation flow can change, so use the current account-management option in ChatGPT Settings rather than relying on an old screenshot or a device-specific label. If you only need to remove conversations, delete the chats instead of closing the account.
Closing an account can affect access to information you still need, so export or otherwise preserve permitted records first. An account deletion request should not be treated as a way to obtain a special chat-recovery period; deleted conversations cannot be restored through ChatGPT or OpenAI Support.
How to delete Claude conversations
Anthropic’s instructions in this section apply to consumer Claude products. Claude for Work, Team, Enterprise, and API environments can have organization-specific controls and retention rules. A business owner or administrator may control access, exports, and deletion, so do not use consumer instructions as a promise about organizational data.

- Open the conversation in Claude.
- Click the conversation’s name at the top.
- Choose Delete.
- Complete the confirmation prompt, if shown.
Anthropic’s personalization guidance identifies deleting a prior chat as the current way to ensure that chat is not included when Claude uses conversation search. Deleting the chat is therefore the relevant action when your concern is that a prior conversation could be found through that feature; changing another preference is not described as a substitute in the cited consumer guidance.
Delete multiple Claude conversations
- Open Chats in the left sidebar.
- Select the conversations you want to remove using the checkboxes that appear.
- Choose Delete Selected.
- Confirm the operation.
Check the selected list before confirming. A bulk action is useful for clearing a group of chats, but it is not the same as deleting the account. If you cannot see checkboxes, make sure you are in the Chats view and not inside an individual conversation; interface placement can vary by device and account.
Delete your Claude account
- Sign in to Claude.
- Select your initials or name in the lower-left corner.
- Open Settings > Account.
- Choose Delete Account.
- Follow the prompts to complete the permanent deletion.
Account deletion removes access to saved chats. Export anything you are entitled to keep before starting the process, because the action is permanent. Deleting the account is not required merely to clear selected conversations; use the conversation or Chats controls when the account itself should remain open.

If you pay for Claude Pro or Max
Anthropic instructs Pro and Max subscribers to cancel the subscription in Billing, wait until the current subscription period ends, and then delete the account. This sequence helps avoid leaving an active paid period attached to an account you are trying to close. Before you press Delete: a practical checklist
- Identify the scope. Decide whether you need to hide one chat, delete one chat, clear all chats, remove a file, or close the account.

What to do if a chat still appears
The chat is still in the sidebar
Refresh the page or reopen the service, then check whether you archived the chat rather than deleted it. Archive intentionally keeps the conversation. If you used a bulk-delete command, verify that the confirmation completed and that you were working in the intended account or workspace. A stale browser view is not proof that deletion failed, but the service’s current account view is the place to verify status.
You deleted the chat but a file remains
For ChatGPT, this is expected when the file was saved in Library. Delete the Library item separately; conversation deletion does not remove that independent copy. If you downloaded the file or sent it to another service, those copies are outside the chat deletion control and must be managed where they were saved.
You turned off model improvement but expected history to disappear
That setting changes future model-improvement use; it is not a history-clearing command. Delete the existing conversation or use the bulk-delete control. Turning the setting back on later does not restore a deleted chat, and turning it off does not remove an archived one.
You cannot find the delete control
Check whether you are using a managed workspace, a mobile or desktop interface with a different menu layout, or an account whose administrator restricts data controls.
