Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo remove an uploaded photo, delete its saved copy from ChatGPT Library if it appears there. Deleting the conversation alone does not delete a separate Library copy, so remove both if you want to clear both. OpenAI says deleted chats and Library files are scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days, subject to limited exceptions.
Delete a photo from ChatGPT Library
-
Open Library from the ChatGPT sidebar. Browse or search for the photo; where available, use the filters for uploaded files and images.

Delete the chat separately
If you also want to remove the conversation where you uploaded the photo, open the chat’s more-options menu in chat history, select Delete, and confirm. The chat is removed from your account view immediately. Deleting a chat cannot be undone or restored through Support, and it does not remove a photo saved separately in Library. OpenAI states this directly in its instructions for deleting and archiving chats and Library guidance.

Choose the action that matches what you want to remove
| Action | What it affects | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Delete the Library file | The saved photo file in Library. | Delete it separately from the chat. Recently deleted and restore controls are available only where the feature is offered. |
| Delete the chat | The conversation in chat history. | It is removed from account view immediately and cannot be restored through Support. A separate Library copy remains unless you delete it too. |
| Archive the chat | Only where the chat appears in the regular sidebar. | Archiving hides the chat; it does not delete it. The chat remains subject to the usual retention rules. |
| Delete a custom GPT or project file | Files associated with that GPT or project. | Custom GPT knowledge and project files have their own lifecycle. Use the file or container controls described in OpenAI’s file upload guidance; deletion follows the applicable schedule and exceptions. |
If you cannot find the photo or deletion control
-
Check Library. A photo may be saved there separately from the conversation. OpenAI’s Library guide explains how to browse and manage files.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Check the account or workspace. Library availability can depend on plan, feature rollout, and workspace policy. In managed accounts, an organization’s controls may affect available options. See OpenAI’s managed-workspace information.

If you uploaded from the macOS app, local Photos permissions govern access to your Mac’s photo library. Changing local permissions or deleting the original from your device does not remove a copy already uploaded to ChatGPT; use ChatGPT’s file and chat controls instead. OpenAI explains the macOS upload options in its macOS app guide.
