Before deleting anything
ArchiveBox command behavior is version-sensitive. The current documentation cited here includes release 0.9.71rc43 security guidance and a versioned removal reference; confirm your installed version and inspect the local command help before acting.

archivebox remove --helpand confirm the available options and URL-matching behavior. - Review the exact URL or filter you intend to use. Matching may be configurable, so do not assume a URL pattern targets only one exact string.
- Retain any backups required by your local policy. Deletion is consequential, and the documentation cannot establish what your installation contains or whether you can recover its data.
The current ArchiveBox remove CLI reference describes URL matching through filter patterns and a filter type. For a single exact URL, use that URL as the pattern and verify what the installed version will match before confirming.

Remove captures by URL
Use the current documented URL-level removal route, substituting the URL you reviewed:

archivebox remove --yes 'https://example.com/page'The --yes option confirms the operation without an interactive prompt. Current ArchiveBox security guidance says this removes matching Snapshot rows and schedules their snapshot directories for cleanup through the normal state-machine path. It is not a promise that every trace of the URL is erased from every store.
Inspect and delete selected Snapshot records instead
If you want to see matching Snapshot records before removal, or need record-level selection rather than URL-level matching, use the snapshot interface documented in the ArchiveBox snapshot CLI reference.

The delete operation consumes Snapshot JSONL from standard input and requires --yes. This route gives you a record-selection workflow, but its substring filter can match more than one URL.

What removal does—and does not—erase
ArchiveBox’s current security guidance describes removal as deleting matching Snapshot rows and scheduling snapshot-directory cleanup. Other stores may retain information about the URL: the guidance specifically notes original imports and operational history in sources/ and logs/, as well as data in an external search backend. Those stores require separate handling. The cited documentation does not provide one universal command to erase all of them.

Accordingly, distinguish removing archived captures from completely erasing every copy or reference. If your goal is full erasure, identify which stores your installation uses and follow the applicable procedures for each; do not assume that a successful archivebox remove has cleared them.
Do not rely on old --delete descriptions
ArchiveBox’s older 0.4.24 removal documentation described --delete as deleting archived content and metadata folders. By contrast, current security guidance for 0.9.71rc43 calls --delete a legacy compatibility flag that does not change removal behavior. Use the documentation for your installed release rather than carrying the older description forward.

- The command or option is not recognized: You may be using a different ArchiveBox release from the documentation cited here. Check your installed version and
archivebox remove --help; use that release’s supported syntax. - More captures match than expected: Review the filter semantics and matching records before deletion. A URL substring filter such as
--url__icontainscan match multiple records; use a narrower filter or select records after inspecting the list. - The snapshot directory is not gone immediately: Current guidance says removal schedules snapshot-directory cleanup. It does not describe this as an immediate deletion guarantee.
- You still find URL references afterward: Check imports, logs, and any external search backend used by your installation. Snapshot removal does not necessarily erase those separate stores.
- You expected
--deleteto change current behavior: In the cited current guidance, it is accepted for compatibility and does not alter removal behavior. Consult the help and documentation matching your installed version.
