For an existing ArchiveBox account that uses a local password, run archivebox manage changepassword <username> from the collection’s environment. With Docker Compose, run docker compose run --rm archivebox manage changepassword <username>. If you can still sign in, use /admin/password_change/. Changing ADMIN_PASSWORD after the account has been created does not reset its password.
Reset an existing local ArchiveBox password from the command line
Use the management command in the environment where your ArchiveBox collection runs. Replace <username> with the account’s actual username. The command prompts you to enter and confirm a new password.
Bare-metal or other non-Compose installation
- Open a shell in the ArchiveBox collection context, where the
archiveboxcommand is available. - Run
archivebox manage changepassword <username>. - Enter and confirm the new password when prompted, then try signing in with that username and password.
Docker Compose
From the directory containing the Compose configuration for the ArchiveBox service, run:
docker compose run --rm archivebox manage changepassword <username>
This runs the management command in the archivebox service context and removes the one-off container afterward. If your Compose service has a different name, substitute that service name. The command must use the same collection and configuration as the instance whose login is failing.

ArchiveBox supports local username-and-password authentication as well as authentication involving a reverse proxy; its authentication and configuration documentation also describes LDAP and API authentication. A failed login does not always mean the ArchiveBox account password is wrong.

- If the login form is handled by ArchiveBox, use the management command above for the local account.
- If a reverse proxy or external identity provider prompts for credentials before ArchiveBox loads, reset or verify the credential with that provider. The ArchiveBox command changes an ArchiveBox account password, not an upstream SSO or proxy password.
- If you are unsure which layer owns the prompt, check your deployment’s proxy and authentication configuration before changing credentials.
See the project’s Setting up Authentication and Configuration pages for the authentication modes and settings.
Why changing ADMIN_PASSWORD did not reset the account
ADMIN_USERNAME and ADMIN_PASSWORD are initial setup values used when creating the first administrator. They are not continuing overrides for an existing user. Changing the environment variable after that account exists does not change its stored password; use changepassword instead. For first-time setup, consult the project’s Usage and Docker documentation for your installation method.

Troubleshoot a password reset that still cannot sign in
- The command says the user does not exist or cannot be changed: check the username and make sure you ran the command in the correct collection or Compose service context.
- The command is unavailable: confirm you are in the ArchiveBox environment and follow the command syntax documented for your installed version. The project’s authentication documentation is actively maintained; its listing showed an edit on September 20, 2026, so consult it if your installed version behaves differently.
- The new password is rejected at login: determine whether the login prompt belongs to ArchiveBox or to a proxy or identity provider. A local password reset will not update an upstream credential.
- Compose cannot find the service: run the command from the directory with the relevant Compose configuration and use the service name defined there;
archiveboxis the documented example.
Protect the collection while recovering access
Avoid editing the database as the normal recovery method: ArchiveBox provides a direct account-management command. ArchiveBox’s Security Overview states that the collection’s SQLite database is not encrypted. Protect the collection directory, database file, and configuration from unauthorized access.
Or skip the browser setup:
ArchiveBox password recovery is an account-administration task; ScreenshotNeo is a separate website screenshot API and MCP server for developers, not a way to reset ArchiveBox credentials. If your related task is capturing a page, one GET request can return an image or PDF:
