To free up space on a MacBook Air, first check which files and categories are using storage, then remove only personal files you recognize and no longer need. On macOS Ventura 13 or later, open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage; on earlier macOS versions, use About This Mac > Storage. Review the Bin before emptying it—items there still occupy space until it is emptied.
How do I delete junk files on my MacBook Air?
1. Check what is using storage
Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage on macOS Ventura 13 or later. On earlier versions, open Apple menu > About This Mac > Storage. The categories and the details available for each can vary with the apps and files on your Mac. In Storage settings, inspect categories such as Documents and look for large files or downloads; Apple says eligible lists can be sorted by size and other fields. See Apple’s guide to freeing storage space and its Storage settings guide.

2. Review files you recognize
Use Finder and the relevant apps to check Downloads, large photos and videos, apps you no longer use, old device backups, and other personal files. Delete something only if you know what it is and are sure you no longer need it. Confirm you have a backup or have decided the file is safe to lose: deletion is not a guarantee that you can recover it later.
For eligible purchased TV, Music, Books, or Podcasts content, Storage settings may offer a way to remove the local copy from your Mac while retaining the option to download it again. In Mail, Apple also identifies Erase Junk Mail and Erase Deleted Items as possible cleanup actions. Check what will be removed before using either command. Apple’s guide to finding and deleting files describes the categories and available actions.

3. Check the Bin, then empty it
Moving a file to the Bin does not immediately reclaim its storage. Apple states, “When you move a file to the Bin, its storage space won’t become available until you empty the Bin.” Open the Bin and check its contents; empty it only when you are sure you do not need anything there.
How do I free up space on my Mac without losing files?
Deleting files is not the only option. You can keep files on another storage device or use Apple’s storage optimization features for eligible content. Choose based on whether you need the files available offline and whether you are prepared to manage another device or use iCloud storage.

| Option | What it does | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Delete personal files | Removes files you no longer want from the Mac; space is reclaimed after the Bin is emptied. | Review files first and ensure you have a backup or no longer need them. |
| Move files to external storage | Keeps files on a separate drive rather than the Mac’s internal storage. | Verify the copied files before removing originals. You need to retain the drive and check compatibility, including ports and format. |
| Use iCloud storage | Can make eligible content available on demand while optimizing local copies. | Uses storage in your iCloud plan; content may need to download when you want it. |
| Optimize Apple TV and Mail storage | Can remove watched Apple TV content and keep only recent Mail attachments on the Mac when space is needed. | Content may need to be downloaded again or fetched when required. |
Use Apple’s recommendations where they fit
In Storage settings, Apple may offer recommendations such as storing eligible Desktop and Documents files, Photos content, and Messages attachments in iCloud; optimizing Apple TV downloads and Mail attachments; or automatically emptying old Bin items. Availability depends on the content and settings on your Mac. iCloud storage is separate from your Mac’s internal storage and uses your iCloud plan. Apple explains these options in its storage optimization guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMove large libraries to an external drive
If you want to keep a large Photos or iMovie library but reduce the space it uses on the Mac, Apple lists moving files to another storage device as an option. An external SSD is one possible drive type, not a requirement. Copy the files, verify that the copy opens and contains what you expect, and only then consider removing the originals. Keep the drive safe and connected when you need those files; check your Mac’s ports and the drive’s format before choosing a specific device.

What is System Data on Mac?
System Data is a broad category for items managed by macOS, not a single folder of disposable files. It can include logs, caches, virtual-memory files, temporary files, fonts, app support files, and plug-ins. Its contents and size vary with the Mac’s current state, and the category may be called Other in some contexts.
Storage settings do not provide a direct way to select and delete the contents of System Data. Avoid deleting unfamiliar system files in an attempt to shrink the category. Instead, manage personal files in Finder or through the apps that created them; macOS can clear caches it considers safe when space is needed. Apple’s file-management guide explains that System Data is managed by macOS and varies in size.

Why didn’t moving files to the Bin free up space?
Because items in the Bin still occupy storage. Check the Bin and empty it to reclaim the space, but do so only after confirming that nothing in it needs to be restored. If you enable Apple’s automatic cleanup recommendation, macOS can remove Bin items older than 30 days; that setting is an alternative to emptying the Bin yourself, not a reason to skip reviewing its contents.

Can Safe Mode help temporarily?
Apple says starting in Safe Mode may clear certain caches that macOS can recreate automatically. This can help with a temporary need, such as making room to complete an update, but it does not promise a lasting amount of reclaimed space. For a more controlled cleanup, identify and delete or relocate personal files you have chosen to remove.
