The right replacement depends on your fridge’s model and sales region—or the model code printed on the cartridge already installed. Check compatibility through Samsung’s market-specific filter finder or your refrigerator’s manual before ordering.
How do I know which water filter to buy for my Samsung fridge?
Start with the refrigerator model number, not a broad “Samsung compatible” label. Enter the model in Samsung’s filter finder for your region, then confirm the result against the manual or the code printed on the existing cartridge. Samsung Canada’s finder explains where to locate a model label for common refrigerator styles: it is on the inside right wall. If you cannot access the model number, read the code on the installed cartridge and cross-check it with the manual or Samsung’s official regional listing. The cartridge code is a useful clue, but check that the replacement listing matches your exact refrigerator and region before buying.

Samsung Canada and the US name HAF-CIN, HAF-QIN, and HAF-CU1/HAFCU1 among their filter types. Samsung UK’s guidance also describes market-specific internal and external options, including HAFEX/EXP. These examples are not a complete global catalog, and similar branding does not establish that two cartridges are interchangeable. How often should I change the water filter?
Samsung recommends replacing refrigerator water filters every six months. Samsung Canada’s guide, updated May 16, 2026, says, “We recommend replacing yours every 6 months.” Treat this as the manufacturer’s recommended interval; local water quality and how often you use the dispenser can affect when a change is needed. The filter indicator on many models is a timer reminder, not a measurement of water quality. Samsung’s guidance is available in its Canada replacement guide and US replacement guide.
Reduced dispenser flow can be another sign that the filter may be due. Samsung Canada suggests comparing flow with and without the filter; a noticeable difference can indicate restriction. Follow your refrigerator’s instructions for any such check, and do not use water without a filter if your model’s instructions say otherwise.

How to replace the cartridge
The compartment location, cartridge alignment, locking direction, reminder controls, and flushing instructions vary by refrigerator and filter. Use the manual for your exact model rather than combining steps or flush amounts from different regional guides. For many internal cartridges, Samsung Canada and the US describe this general sequence:
- Find the filter compartment in the manual. Shut off the water supply if instructed, then dispense water until flow stops to relieve pressure.
- Unlock and remove the old cartridge according to the markings or instructions for your model.
- Remove the protective cap from the replacement cartridge. Align and insert it as directed, then turn or push it into the locked position.
- Reset the filter indicator using the controls specified in the manual. The button or control sequence varies by model.
- Flush the new filter before drinking the water. Follow the exact instructions for your cartridge and refrigerator.
Flush amounts are not universal: Samsung Canada advises dispensing about seven minutes, or 10–12 large glasses, for the filter types covered by its guide. Samsung UK specifies a 10-litre flush for the procedures in its guide. Those instructions apply to their respective covered models and filters; use your own manual or regional Samsung instructions if they differ.

What if the replacement filter will not fit?
First relieve water pressure and check the cartridge code and model compatibility. Samsung US documents a lock-design change for the HAF-CU1: the newer cartridge uses three ribs instead of two to provide a tighter fit and seal. Samsung says the newer design fits older refrigerator models, but the filter housing may need to be fully unlocked before installation. Follow the steps in Samsung’s filter-fit troubleshooting guide.
- Temporarily reinstall the old filter.
- Press it in while turning it farther to the left until it stops, to fully unlock the housing.
- Remove the old filter and try installing the replacement.
If the replacement still does not fit, stop rather than forcing it; Samsung directs owners to support for further help. Samsung warns that third-party filters may fit poorly, leak, damage the housing, or break inside it. Samsung recommends using its genuine filters; that is the manufacturer’s advice, not an independent comparative test of all alternatives. What filtration claims should you check?
Samsung US says its water filters meet NSF/ANSI 42, 53, and 401 and says they reduce contaminants including chlorine, lead, mercury, and some emerging contaminants. These are Samsung’s claims for the filters covered by its US replacement guide; they should not be extended to an unverified third-party cartridge. Filtration claims also do not mean that a filter makes an unsafe water supply safe to drink.
