To delete one conversation, open Copilot’s Chats or conversation-history list, find the entry, open its menu, and choose Delete. The exact gesture depends on whether you use Copilot on the web, desktop, or mobile—and clearing a whole history follows a different route from deleting one chat. First identify whether you’re signed in with a personal Microsoft account, Apple ID, or work or school account.
Delete one conversation from personal Copilot
Open Copilot and display the Chats or conversation-history list. Microsoft documents these controls for the personal Copilot app:

- Copilot on the web at copilot.com: Select the three dots beside the conversation, then choose Delete.
- Copilot for Windows or macOS: Right-click the conversation in the history list and choose Delete.
- Copilot mobile app: Tap the three dots beside the conversation and choose Delete.
For signed-in personal Microsoft Account users, Microsoft also describes selecting the conversation in the Chats list, choosing … More, then selecting Delete. Labels and gestures can vary by app version. See Microsoft’s conversation-history instructions and personal privacy controls.
These instructions delete a conversation from the history list. They do not establish a control for deleting just one message while keeping the rest of that conversation.

Clear all history for a personal Microsoft account
To remove all Copilot app activity history associated with a personal Microsoft Account, use Microsoft’s privacy dashboard rather than deleting chats one by one:
- Sign in to the Microsoft privacy dashboard with the personal Microsoft Account you use in Copilot.
- Go to Privacy > Empower your productivity > Copilot > Your Copilot app activity history > Copilot apps.
- Select Delete all activity history, review the confirmation, and select Clear.
The dashboard distinguishes activity in Copilot apps from activity in Microsoft 365 apps. Check that you are in the intended section before confirming; Microsoft’s dashboard guidance explains the controls.

Clear history when you sign in with Apple ID
Microsoft’s consumer support instructions give Apple ID users a separate in-app route: open Copilot and go to Account > Privacy > Clear my history. This is not the Microsoft Account privacy-dashboard procedure. See Microsoft’s conversation-history page.

- Sign in to the My Account portal using your work or school account.
- Open My Account > Data and Privacy > Data options.
- Open Copilot activity history, select Delete, check Microsoft Copilot in the dialog, then select Delete again to submit the request.
Microsoft says the deletion may take time. If the app is already open, old history may remain visible until you close and reopen it. This activity-history deletion does not remove content Copilot helped create if you saved that content in a file. The selection applies across the Microsoft 365 apps listed in the deletion dialog, rather than letting you target only selected apps. See Microsoft’s work and school activity-history instructions.

Deleting a conversation removes it from chat history; Microsoft identifies that as the documented option if you do not want Copilot Chat to reference that chat. Personalization settings have a different purpose and do not erase the visible conversation or activity-history record.

- Chat-history personalization: Turning it off removes inferred personalization data after 30 days, according to Microsoft. Microsoft warns that turning the setting back on during that period can restore the inferences. This is not the same as deleting conversation history. Details are in Microsoft’s explanation of Copilot Chat history.
- General Copilot personalization: Turning this off also does not delete conversation history. Consult Microsoft’s Copilot privacy FAQ for the distinction.
How long does Copilot keep history?
Microsoft Support’s Privacy FAQ for Microsoft Copilot says: “By default, we store conversation activity for 18 months.” The FAQ does not state a publication year for that retention figure. It describes the default for personal Copilot activity; it is not a promise about organization-specific retention or administrative policies.
