Apple says AirPods 5 offer up to 1.5x more ANC, but that is a manufacturer test claim—not a promise of a particular difference in everyday listening.
What changes between AirPods 5 and AirPods 4 ANC?
Apple’s current comparison gives AirPods 5 the advantage in its stated ANC result and dust, sweat, and water resistance. AirPods 4 ANC have the longer quoted listening time. Both models’ cases support wireless charging and include a speaker for Find My.

Apple says Find My functionality requires iOS 27 or later. Resistance ratings are based on controlled laboratory tests; resistance can diminish with normal wear, and Apple says not to charge either product when wet. Neither rating means the earbuds are intended to be submerged.
How much better is AirPods 5 ANC?
Apple’s claim is “up to 1.5x more Active Noise Cancellation” for AirPods 5 compared with AirPods 4 ANC, tested to IEC 60268-24. It is a comparison of test results, not a guarantee that a listener will perceive noise as reduced by a specific amount. Apple’s comparison does not establish how the difference sounds in a particular setting or to an individual wearer.

That distinction matters when deciding whether to upgrade: the published multiple tells you which model Apple says performed better under its test method, but it cannot tell you whether the change will be noticeable enough for your commute, office, or other listening environment.
Which model has better battery life?
Apple lists up to 5 hours per charge and up to 22 hours with the case for AirPods 4 ANC, with ANC enabled. For AirPods 5, Apple lists up to 4 hours per charge and up to 20 hours with the case, also with ANC enabled. These are manufacturer estimates; actual battery life varies with settings, environment, usage, and other factors.

The figures come from different test periods and conditions, so they are not a controlled head-to-head result. Apple says it tested AirPods 5 in July and August 2026 using preproduction units, an iPhone 18 Pro, prerelease software, a specified purchased AAC music playlist, and 50% volume. The per-charge ANC test ran until the first AirPod stopped playback. Apple’s footnote says its AirPods 4 ANC test took place in July and August 2024 with preproduction earbuds, iPhone 16 Pro Max units, and prerelease software.

Choose AirPods 5 if
- You want the model Apple says has more ANC under its IEC 60268-24 comparison.
- You value its IP57 rating over the IP54 rating listed for AirPods 4 ANC.
- You want the AirPods 5 Wireless Charging Case, including its Apple Watch and Qi charging support.
Keep AirPods 4 ANC if
- Their current noise cancellation meets your needs and Apple’s stated ANC advantage does not give you a reason to replace them.
- You prioritize Apple’s longer quoted battery figures: up to 5 hours per charge and 22 hours with the case, versus up to 4 and 20 hours for AirPods 5. Those estimates come from different test years and conditions.
Apple’s comparison does not establish differences in comfort, fit, or sound quality, and it cannot determine whether an upgrade is worth a particular price. Compare current prices in your region before buying; without a verified local price, there is no evidence-based value winner.
