To optimize a drive in Windows 11 or Windows 10, search for defrag, open Defragment and Optimize Drives, select a drive, then choose Analyze or Optimize. Windows defragments hard disk drives (HDDs) and sends TRIM commands to solid-state drives (SSDs), so the built-in Optimize command applies the operation appropriate to the drive type. Windows generally runs optimization automatically once a week by default.
Where is Defragment and Optimize Drives in Windows 11 or 10?
- Select the taskbar search box and type defrag.
- Open Defragment and Optimize Drives from the search results.
- Select the drive you want to check.
- For an HDD, choose Analyze to check whether optimization is needed, or choose Optimize to run it.
Microsoft documents this tool for Windows 11 and Windows 10. Labels or availability may vary with the Windows build or device configuration; taskbar search is the documented route. Microsoft’s Windows drive-optimization instructions

What does Optimize do on an HDD versus an SSD?
| Drive type | Windows operation | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| HDD (hard disk drive) | Defragmentation | Reorganizes fragmented files so the drive can read them more easily. |
| SSD (solid-state drive) | TRIM | Tells the drive which data areas can safely be cleaned up when the drive is not busy. |
Windows uses “Optimize” as the general command for drive-appropriate maintenance; it does not mean that every drive is defragmented. Microsoft’s drive-optimization guidance and Storage settings guidance describe HDD defragmentation and SSD TRIM. Use the built-in command rather than routinely running a third-party SSD defragmenter or disabling Windows optimization solely because the drive is an SSD.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Choose a daily, weekly, or monthly schedule, or turn scheduled optimization off.
- Select which drives are included.
- An option can increase the frequency if optimization is missed three times.
Leaving the built-in schedule enabled is a reasonable default. A scheduled setting describes when Windows is set to run optimization; it does not by itself confirm that a particular drive successfully optimized on a particular computer. Microsoft explains the schedule controls.
Will drive optimization fix a slow PC?
It may be one useful step when investigating drive-related performance, but it is not a guaranteed fix for general slowness. Microsoft lists other possible causes, including limited storage space, too many startup apps, outdated software, and aging hardware. Its Windows performance guidance also covers updates, malware checks, power settings, and resource usage. Consider whether the problem is slow file access or broader system lag, then investigate the relevant causes; older hardware may not improve significantly from software changes.
