You can capture audio from the active Chrome tab in a Manifest V3 extension and build a live caption pipeline around it. The browser-side capture uses one tab audio stream, but that does not mean a single cloud stream will both transcribe and translate it. Chrome documents the capture flow; whether one speech provider stream can also translate depends on that provider’s documented API.
How MV3 tab-audio capture works
Use the service worker to coordinate a user-started capture, and an offscreen document to own the actual media stream. Chrome’s documented worker-to-offscreen pattern is supported starting in Chrome 116. It requires the tabCapture permission and a user invocation, such as clicking the extension action. - User starts capture: The user clicks the extension action or invokes another user-facing control. Treat this as an explicit start, not background surveillance.
- Service worker obtains an ID: Call
chrome.tabCapture.getMediaStreamId({targetTabId})for the target tab. - Offscreen document receives the ID: Pass the stream ID from the worker to an offscreen document. The worker coordinates messages; it cannot directly access a
MediaStream. - Offscreen document opens the stream: Use
getUserMedia()with the tab media-source constraints and the received stream ID. The offscreen document then owns the resultingMediaStreamand can provide it to the audio-processing pipeline.

Capturing tab audio can interrupt its ordinary playback unless the extension routes the captured signal back to the user. Chrome’s example creates an AudioContext, connects a MediaStreamAudioSourceNode made from the captured stream to the audio context’s destination, and uses that route to keep playback audible. Follow that pattern if captions should not silence the tab; see Chrome’s tabCapture example.

Make capture state visible and user-controlled. Provide clear start and stop controls, and ensure the audio route is disconnected or the capture is stopped when the user ends the session. This is particularly important because a working caption pipeline can otherwise make it unclear whether tab audio is still being captured.
One browser stream is not necessarily one provider stream
The extension can acquire one browser MediaStream and use it as the input to a processing pipeline. That is a browser capture decision. The number of remote streams or services is a separate architecture decision: the extension might send audio to a speech recognizer and then send recognized text to a translation service, or use a provider that explicitly documents speech translation in one streaming interface.

Google Cloud documents Speech-to-Text streaming as bidirectional gRPC: audio is sent while recognition results, including interim and final results, are returned in real time. Its current guide says streaming recognition is gRPC-only. The reviewed Google Cloud documentation establishes streaming recognition, not translation on that same stream. Confirm the provider’s supported client transport and authentication model. The documented Google Cloud streaming interface uses gRPC; the sources cited here do not establish direct compatibility with an extension page’s transport. Depending on the chosen provider and client setup, a backend or intermediary may be needed.

Choose the recognition and translation design

For an initial implementation, the documented and clearly separable path is capture, stream audio to a recognizer, then translate the resulting text. A single combined provider stream could reduce the number of service interactions, but only if the selected vendor’s official documentation confirms that it performs both tasks. The browser’s one input stream does not prove that capability.
Design the caption display for revisions
Streaming recognition can return interim hypotheses before it returns a final result. In Google Cloud’s documentation, interim text is provisional and may change; a final result marks the last recognition result for that portion of the audio. See Google Cloud’s streaming recognition guide.

- Show interim words with a visual treatment that distinguishes them from settled captions.
- Replace or revise an interim segment when a newer hypothesis arrives; do not append every interim response as if it were new speech.
- Mark a segment as final only when the recognizer indicates that it is final.
- Keep the original recognized text and its translation associated as a segment, so a revised recognition result can trigger an updated translation rather than leaving mismatched captions on screen.
Implementation checklist
- Declare the
tabCapturepermission and begin capture only after a user action. - Use the service worker for coordination and the offscreen document for
getUserMedia(), the media stream, and audio processing. - Route captured audio to the audio destination if the user should continue hearing the tab.
- Make capture status and stop behavior clear in the extension UI.
- Check the selected speech provider’s streaming protocol and how the extension will connect to it; do not assume the browser stream can be sent directly.
- Use separate recognition and translation steps unless the vendor’s official documentation verifies a combined speech-translation stream.
- Design caption handling around revisable interim results and explicitly final results.
Chrome and cloud APIs can change. The capture pattern described here is documented for Chrome 116 and later, while provider support and transport should be checked against the vendor’s current documentation when implementing the extension.
