Lean toward a new character if they fill a real roster gap, enable a team you want to use, or matter more to you personally. Consider an Eidolon if you already own the character, know what that specific upgrade changes, and can afford it without sacrificing a higher-priority character.
What you are choosing between
A new character can add a role, team option, or play style your roster does not currently have. An Eidolon is a character-specific upgrade obtained through duplicates; its effect might improve performance or add a capability, but its value depends on the exact character, Eidolon, team, and content you care about. The word “Eidolon” alone says little about whether the upgrade is worthwhile.

There is no established game-wide statistic showing that one choice produces better outcomes or pull efficiency for players. Treat this as an account decision, not a universal ranking. A character-specific guide, for example, describes Dr. Ratio as strong at E0 and cautions that saved pulls may offer more value elsewhere; that example cannot establish a rule for every character or current roster. Use this decision checklist
- Identify the Eidolon’s actual payoff. Find out what the specific upgrade changes: damage, utility, comfort, team flexibility, or a limitation you want removed. Decide whether that effect matters in the teams and content you play.
- Identify the roster gap. Ask whether the new character would fill a role you lack, enable a team you want, or satisfy a personal preference you value more than the upgrade.
- Check your banner state. Record your current Character Event Warp pity and whether your next 5-star is guaranteed to be featured. A community-maintained wiki reports a 90-warp maximum to a 5-star, a 50% featured-character chance on that 5-star, a featured guarantee after a non-featured 5-star, and carry-over of pity and guarantee between Character Event Warps. - Count the opportunity cost. Consider which future character you would give up pursuing if you spend those pulls now. Warp outcomes are probabilistic, not promises of an early result. HoYoverse says outcomes follow the rates and probabilities listed on the Character Banner; check the HoYoverse Help Center and the in-game banner.
- Set a stopping point before you pull. If the Eidolon is a nice-to-have, decide in advance how much of your reserve you are willing to spend without putting your next priority out of reach.
How to weigh the two options
Compare the options against the same questions rather than judging by character rarity or Eidolon number alone:

- Immediate team impact: Does the upgrade materially improve a team you already use, or does the new character provide a meaningful role or team option?
- Versatility: Would the character or upgrade help across the teams and content you care about, or mainly in one narrow situation?
- Pull budget and guarantee: How much can you spend, and what does your current pity and guarantee state mean for the next featured 5-star?
- Future priorities: Which upcoming character matters more to you than the current upgrade?
- Enjoyment: Which choice would make you happier to play? Personal preference is a legitimate part of the decision.
These are decision factors, not measured game-wide performance statistics. The game uses Star Rail Passes or Special Passes for Warps, Stellar Jade can substitute for missing passes, and duplicate characters award Eidolon items. Both choices are in-game pulls; buying premium currency is not a requirement for making the decision.
When each choice makes more sense
Lean toward a new character when
- Your roster has a role or team option you genuinely want to add.
- The character is a stronger personal priority than improving someone you already own.
- You cannot name a specific, meaningful benefit from the Eidolon you are considering.
Consider an Eidolon when
- You already own the character and understand the exact effect of the next Eidolon.
- That effect meaningfully improves a team or removes a limitation you personally care about.
- You have set aside enough pulls that pursuing it will not jeopardize a more important character.
Make the choice without treating probabilities as promises
Character Event Warp rules and rates determine the risk of spending your reserve, but they do not tell you which option is more valuable for your account. HoYoverse directs players to the probabilities shown on each Character Banner. Check those live rules and your own Warp history before committing, especially after game updates; the numerical pity details above come from a community-maintained wiki summary and should be verified in-game.
Compare the actual new character with the actual Eidolon, account for your guarantee state and future priorities, then choose the option whose payoff matters more to you. If neither payoff is compelling, saving is also a valid choice.
