It is a force-planning target, not a published mathematical result. The number of active squadrons is lower and changes as aircraft retire and replacements enter service.
What does the 42-squadron figure mean?
PRS Legislative Research reported an authorized strength of 42 fighter squadrons in its analysis of the 2025–26 Defence Demands for Grants. “Authorized” describes the benchmark for the force; it does not mean that 42 squadrons are currently operational. The Ministry of Defence has also described fighter-squadron deficiencies as arising over time as equipment becomes obsolete and is phased out, with planned induction intended to address them as a continuous process. Ministry of Defence, 3 February 2021; PRS Legislative Research, 2025.

How many fighter squadrons are active?
Published counts depend on the date and source. PRS reported 31 active squadrons in its 2025 analysis. After the last MiG-21 fleet retired on 26 September 2025, the Associated Press reported that the IAF had 29 fighter squadrons. These are snapshots from different reporting contexts, not figures that should be combined or presented as a live October 2026 tally. PRS Legislative Research, 2025; Associated Press, 26 September 2025.

The AP report described a squadron as comprising 16–18 fighter jets. That is a general description in its report, not evidence of an official IAF rule for converting the 42-squadron target into an aircraft total. Associated Press, 26 September 2025.

How is the target calculated?
No reproducible official calculation for exactly 42 squadrons is given in the public material cited here. A 2018 Lok Sabha Standing Committee on Defence report records that the Ministry treated details of the sanctioned force-level requirement as sensitive. That limits what can be responsibly said about the number’s derivation: the public record establishes the authorized benchmark, but not a formula readers can reproduce. Lok Sabha Standing Committee on Defence report, 2018.
Force planning can involve the security environment, operational roles, aircraft availability, and the timing of retirements and inductions. Those are useful context, not a disclosed calculation of 42. Public discussion may connect the benchmark to a two-front threat, but that does not establish that an official formula converts such a scenario into exactly 42 squadrons. Without published evidence, it would be speculation to supply a squadron aircraft multiplier, readiness or attrition allowance, geographic allocation, or two-front calculation.

Why the active count changes
Squadron strength reflects the timing of retirements as well as new aircraft entering service. In a 3 February 2021 reply, the Ministry said deficiencies arise through obsolescence and the phasing out of equipment, and that planned induction is a continuous process. A falling active count after a retirement therefore does not, by itself, show that the authorized benchmark has changed. Ministry of Defence, 3 February 2021.

Procurement milestones are not interchangeable with operational squadron strength. Approval, an order, delivery, induction into service, and formation of an operational squadron are different stages.

Quick Recap
How to read claims about the IAF’s strength
- Check whether a figure is an authorized target or an active count.
- Look for the source and reporting date; squadron counts can change after retirements and inductions.
- Distinguish approvals and orders from aircraft delivered, inducted, and operating in formed squadrons.
- Treat claims that explain the exact 42-squadron calculation as proposals or commentary unless they cite a disclosed official method.
