There is no universal number of hours that makes an $80 game worth buying. Decide by weighing how well it fits what you want to play, what reliable information says about its likely experience, how it compares with realistic alternatives, and whether you are comfortable paying full price now. Without a specific game, edition, platform, retailer, and country, no title-specific buy-or-wait verdict is possible.
Start with what you want from the game
Before calculating hours, name the experience you are paying for: a story, a particular genre, a challenge, time with friends, or accessibility features that make play enjoyable for you. A short game may justify its price if it delivers the experience you want. A much longer game may not if its systems, repeated tasks, or style do not appeal.

Estimate how you are likely to use it
Read more than one review or preview, looking for campaign length, optional content, replayability, online population, accessibility, and technical condition. Pay attention to which kinds of players liked or disliked the game, and whether coverage reflects your platform and the current patched version. Advertised completion times and an individual reviewer’s playtime are clues, not promises about your own experience.
Reviews can help reduce uncertainty, but they cannot predict your enjoyment precisely. A study by Imke Reimers, Christoph Riedl, and Joel Waldfogel, dated November 4, 2025, analyzed Steam data covering 50,000 consumers and 100 games. Among 59,139 observed reviews for owned user-game combinations, 7,407 (12.5%) were “not recommended.” The authors also found an association between lower playtime per dollar spent and a greater likelihood of a negative recommendation. That is an association in this particular dataset—not proof that playtime causes satisfaction or regret, and not a verdict on another platform or an unnamed game. Read the working paper by Reimers, Riedl, and Waldfogel.

Use cost per hour as a comparison, not a rule
You can divide the price by the hours you realistically expect to play: at $80, for example, an estimate of 20 hours works out to $4 per expected hour. This can help compare similar games when you value their experiences similarly. It cannot tell you whether those hours will be enjoyable, and there is no universal cost-per-hour target that guarantees a good purchase.
Compare the actual purchase options
Check the same game’s editions, platform compatibility, included content, format, and total price across retailers. Make sure a review or price listing is for the exact edition and platform you are considering. Compare the value of playing now with the value of waiting for a sale; whether launch-day access matters is personal.

Format and pricing details are platform-specific. Nintendo says Switch 2 packaged and digital games offer the same experience. Nintendo also says MSRP may differ for new Nintendo-published digital titles exclusive to Switch 2 beginning with May 2026 preorders; retail partners set their own prices, and pricing can vary by title. This guidance does not establish a general rule for other platforms, games, or retailers. See Nintendo Support’s “About Nintendo Switch 2 Game Pricing”.

Refund eligibility varies by storefront and may depend on region, product marking, download or streaming status, playtime, and local law. Treat a refund as a limited safety net, not as a free trial, and verify the current terms for your purchase:

Set a maximum price that fits your budget
Ask whether you would be comfortable spending the full amount if the game turns out to be less enjoyable or shorter than expected. If not, wishlist it and wait, or choose another edition or game that better fits your budget. Your reasonable price depends on your finances, alternatives, and how much you want to play now—not a universal sale schedule.

- Buy now if the experience strongly appeals, current information supports your expectations, the exact offer suits your platform, and the price fits your budget.
- Wait if important questions remain about performance, content, online activity, or the right edition—or if full price feels too high for the risk.
- Skip if the game’s core experience does not match what you want, even if it promises many hours.
To assess a specific $80 listing, you need the game title, edition, platform, retailer, and country. Those details determine what is included, what alternatives cost, which reviews apply, and what purchase protections are available.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
