Some Android apps work well on a wide foldable screen; others merely run. An app may fill the unfolded display without adapting its layout, so the experience depends on the app and its version, the device and Android version, and how it handles folding, rotation and window resizing.
What “works well” means on a foldable
Android separates basic compatibility from a layout that is optimized for a large screen and from experiences designed around foldable-specific features. In its basic adaptive-ready tier, an app can run full-screen or in a full app window and support critical tasks even if its layout is less than ideal. Filling the inner display, therefore, does not by itself mean an app uses the space well.
A useful assessment asks whether the app lets you complete essential tasks, arranges content and controls sensibly at wider sizes, preserves state when the display changes, and makes relevant foldable postures or multitasking modes useful. Android’s quality guidance describes these as distinct dimensions rather than a guarantee that every app meets them. Android’s large-screen app quality guidance sets out the tiers and criteria.
What Android 16 changes—and what it does not
For apps targeting API level 36, Android 16 overrides certain app restrictions on displays with a smallest width of at least 600dp. Android’s documentation identifies tablets, inner displays of large-screen foldables and desktop windowing among the relevant cases. The restrictions include certain orientation locks, resizability settings and minimum or maximum aspect-ratio settings; the guide also documents exceptions and an opt-out. It says the opt-out capability is planned to be eliminated at API level 37. These platform details can change, so consult the current Android orientation, aspect-ratio and resizability guide for the applicable release.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
This affects how a qualifying app can be displayed; it does not automatically redesign the app. An app forced to fill a larger window may still show a phone-oriented layout with wasted space, stretched content or awkward proportions. The target API level, device and Android version all matter, so behavior can differ between apps and devices.
How to judge an app on the wide inner display
- Look at how it uses width. Useful extra space might reveal more content or support a sensible multi-pane layout, rather than simply stretching a phone layout. Android gives a two-pane layout with a navigation rail on an unfolded landscape display as one example. Android’s foldable guidance discusses fold-aware layouts.
- Check readability and proportions. Android’s quality guidance gives a 45–75 character line-length guideline for supported languages and calls for graphics and interface elements without noticeable distortion, blur or pixelation. These are criteria for evaluating an app, not evidence that a particular app meets them.
- Check continuity. Fold and unfold the device, rotate it or resize the app window. Notice whether the app retains your place and state, and whether important actions remain available.
- Consider posture. Book posture can suit reading; tabletop posture can suit video or calls when the app’s use case supports those arrangements. Check that controls remain usable and that dialogs or pop-ups do not land awkwardly over the fold. Android’s foldable app quality guidance covers posture-related behavior.
- Try the window modes you expect to use. Large-screen foldables can support split-screen, and desktop windowing is available on some devices. Check whether the app remains usable in the modes offered by your particular phone.
- For camera apps, inspect the preview in both states. Android’s foldable quality guidance calls for camera preview behavior to adjust between folded and unfolded states.
A quick test using your own apps
- Open the app on the folded display and complete a task you commonly use it for.
- Unfold the device and repeat the task. Check whether the app uses the added width productively and whether content remains readable.
- Rotate the device, then fold and unfold it again. Look for lost state, missing controls or disruptive layout changes.
- If available, try split-screen or another resizable window mode, especially if you expect to multitask.
- For apps where posture matters—such as video, reading or camera apps—check the relevant book or tabletop arrangement and the folded and unfolded camera preview.
Android recommends testing across multiple device and window configurations; the options available depend on the device. Its large-screen testing and quality guidance provides further criteria.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Can you tell which apps are optimized?
Not from the fact that an app opens or fills the screen alone. Use basic compatibility, layout quality, continuity and foldable-specific usefulness as separate checks. Android’s guidance defines quality expectations, but it does not establish how a named app performs, and there is no representative figure here for the share of Android apps optimized for wide foldables. Results can also change with app updates and differ by device or Android release.
