Amazon Prime is worth its price only if the delivery, entertainment, and other benefits you actually use are worth more to you than the membership fee. In the U.S., standard Prime costs $14.99 a month or $139 a year; compare the plan you would choose with the delivery costs and alternatives you would realistically have without it.
Start with the price and how long you expect to subscribe
Amazon lists standard U.S. Prime at $14.99 per month or $139 per year. Paying monthly for 12 months would cost $179.88 at those listed rates, making annual billing $40.88 less over a full year. The annual fee averages about $11.58 per month. That comparison assumes a full year of membership and excludes taxes or account-specific terms. Check Amazon’s Prime page for current prices and terms.

If you only need Prime for a short stretch, compare the monthly price for that period with the annual fee rather than assuming you will keep it all year. The annual plan is cheaper only if your expected membership duration and use justify paying for the year.

Check whether you qualify for a lower-priced plan
Amazon lists Prime Access at $6.99 per month for qualifying government-assistance recipients and income-verified customers. It also lists Prime for Young Adults at $7.49 per month or $69 per year for eligible students and people ages 18–24. The cited Amazon page describes a 30-day Prime Access trial and a six-month trial for eligible young adults and students. Eligibility, trial availability, and prices can change, so verify them during enrollment.

Estimate what Prime would actually save you
Use this worksheet with your own realistic estimates:
Membership fee − value of benefits you would otherwise pay for − delivery charges you would otherwise incur = estimated net cost.

A negative result suggests the benefits you counted exceed the fee; a positive result means you are paying more than the estimated value. This is a decision aid, not a guarantee of savings. Count only expenses you would genuinely have incurred or benefits you personally value.
Compare delivery with your non-member alternative
Amazon says non-members can get free delivery on qualifying orders of at least $35, with delivery taking five to eight days. Eligibility varies by item, and the delivery estimate appears at checkout. Check Amazon’s non-member delivery information before assigning a value to Prime shipping.

For each order, ask whether you would otherwise pay for faster shipping, meet the free-delivery threshold, or simply wait. Count only delivery charges you would actually pay without Prime. Faster delivery may be valuable even when it does not replace a fee, but assign it a personal value rather than calling it cash savings.
Value entertainment and other benefits by your own use
Amazon’s bundle spans delivery, video, music, reading, gaming, photos, grocery offers, and other benefits. Their inclusion does not automatically make them valuable to your household. Count a service when it replaces something you would pay for, or when you place a value on access you will use.

Prime Video includes a mix of included titles and separate paid channels, rentals, and purchases. Do not treat every title as included; check the viewing terms for the specific content you want. See Prime Video’s storefront for current options and terms.
Do not confuse a discount or a bundle with savings
- Do not count an item as a saving just because it is on sale. If you would not have bought it otherwise, the discount did not reduce an expense you planned to make.
- Do not count every listed benefit at its full retail price. Include only services you would otherwise pay for or value enough to use.
- Account for purchases the membership may encourage. More shopping is not a benefit if it raises your spending.
- Use Amazon’s savings statistic cautiously. About Amazon reported that U.S. Prime members saved an average of over $500 each on deliveries “last year,” but the surfaced page does not clearly identify the measurement year. It is an Amazon-published average, not a forecast for your household. See About Amazon’s delivery-savings statement.
Make the decision for your household
- Choose the billing period you expect to keep. Compare the corresponding membership fee with your likely membership duration.
- Estimate your non-Prime delivery behavior. Review your typical orders and decide which would qualify for free non-member delivery, which you would wait for, and which would lead you to pay for speed.
- List only benefits you will use. For video and other services, compare Prime with the alternatives you would otherwise pay for; do not assign value to unused features.
- Subtract realistic avoided costs from the fee. Exclude hypothetical savings, unwanted purchases, and benefits you do not value.
- Check discounted-plan eligibility. If you qualify, redo the calculation using that plan’s current price and terms.
Amazon presents Prime as a bundle of savings, convenience, and entertainment, but that is the company’s promotional viewpoint. The right answer depends on your own order habits, delivery preferences, and use of included benefits; no household-specific independent valuation establishes a universal break-even point.
