Inspect the expected, actual, and diff images first; then reproduce the baseline environment and stabilize the page before adjusting comparison tolerance or updating snapshots. Playwright’s visual comparison guide warns that rendering can vary with the host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode.
1. Read the failure artifacts before changing settings
Playwright produces expected, actual, and diff images when a screenshot assertion fails. Compare all three and identify where the pixels diverge. The shape of the mismatch is a clue, not proof of its cause.

- Broad shifts or changed dimensions: check viewport, device scale, project selection, and layout state.
- Text or font differences: check the operating system, installed fonts, and browser version.
- Thin edges around otherwise matching shapes: antialiasing may differ, especially across environments.
- Missing or incomplete content: check whether assets and data were ready before capture.
- Differences in a localized region: look for live data, animation, hover state, a caret, or other changing UI.
Confirm the mismatch by examining the rendered page and test inputs. Do not update the accepted image just to make the failure disappear.

2. Reproduce the environment that created the baseline
Before changing the test, compare the failing run with the run that generated the accepted snapshot. Check the operating system, browser engine and version, Playwright version, project configuration, headless or headed mode, viewport, device scale, and installed fonts. Hardware and power source can also affect rendering, according to Playwright’s visual comparison documentation.

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Snapshot names include browser and platform context, or the configured project name. If a test is selecting a different project or target, it may be looking for a different baseline than you expect. Separate browser engines or platforms can require separate snapshots because their rendering and fonts differ.
For repeatable comparisons, run visual tests in a consistent CI image or reproduce the environment that generated the baseline. If your team intentionally tests several browser or platform targets, treat each as its own rendering context and review its expectation separately.

3. Make the page state repeatable
toHaveScreenshot() waits until two consecutive page screenshots match, then compares the final capture with the expectation. That helps with transient rendering, but it does not make changing data deterministic. A live clock, randomized content, changing API response, rotating banner, or ongoing animation can still produce a different settled image on another run. See Playwright’s PageAssertions documentation.
Control readiness and data
- Wait for the intended UI state, and ensure required data and assets are ready before capture.
- Use deterministic fixtures or stub changing network responses when that is appropriate for the behavior under test.
- Check whether a rotating banner or other live content is expected to vary; freeze its inputs if the test is meant to protect a stable design.
Control animation and pointer state
If animation is not what the test is intended to verify, disable or finish it using the screenshot API’s animation option; consult the documentation for its current behavior. Hover effects present at capture time are included, so move the pointer away or deliberately establish the hover state you want tested.
Normalize only irrelevant variation
Playwright’s stylePath screenshot option applies a custom stylesheet during capture and can filter dynamic content. Use it only for genuinely volatile regions that are outside the test’s purpose. Hiding a component or state the test is supposed to protect would conceal a regression rather than stabilize the test.

If the mismatch suggests a caret or capture-size problem, review the screenshot options for caret handling and CSS-pixel versus device-pixel capture. The available controls are documented in Visual comparisons.
4. Adjust comparison tolerance only after stabilizing inputs
Playwright Test uses pixelmatch for visual comparison. The threshold setting controls the accepted perceived color difference for corresponding pixels; the SnapshotAssertions API describes it as a YIQ color-space measure and documents a default of 0.2. This is a configuration default, not a statistic about test reliability.

maxDiffPixels limits the number of differing pixels, while maxDiffPixelRatio limits the share of pixels that may differ. These limits can be set for an assertion or in test configuration. threshold changes sensitivity to per-pixel color differences; the pixel-count options govern how many differences are accepted.
Choose the narrowest setting that fits the test’s purpose. A small tolerance may help with understood antialiasing differences in a fixed environment. A broad tolerance can also let meaningful visual regressions pass. If you depart from defaults, record why so maintainers can distinguish an intentional trade-off from accidental weakening.

5. Decide whether the change is a bug or an intended update
- If the actual image reveals a bug, fix the page or test setup and rerun the test.
- If the UI change is intended, inspect the changed screenshot and confirm it is the desired result.
- Update expectations with
npx playwright test --update-snapshots. - Review and commit the changed snapshot files alongside the code change.
Playwright documents the update workflow in Visual comparisons. A regenerated baseline is an assertion about the desired UI, so it should be reviewed like a code change.
6. A practical decision checklist
- Does the diff affect most of the page? Verify viewport, project, platform, browser, and device scale.
- Is it mainly text or glyph edges? Verify OS, fonts, browser version, and whether the baseline came from the same environment.
- Does it move between runs? Control data, animation, timing, and pointer state before touching tolerance.
- Is it a small, understood pixel-level discrepancy? Consider a narrowly scoped threshold or diff limit and document the reason.
- Does the actual image show the intended new design? Review and update the baseline; otherwise fix the regression or test setup.

For a standalone screenshot rather than a Playwright visual assertion, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return an image or PDF; for example, this cURL request captures a WebP image. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does `toHaveScreenshot()` make a visual test deterministic?
No. It waits for two consecutive screenshots to match, but changing page data or state still needs to be controlled.
Should I update snapshots whenever a test fails?
No. Update only after reviewing the actual image and deciding the visual change is intended.
