Short answer: EC2 Spot can lower the compute rate, but AWS may reclaim a Spot Instance and ordinarily gives two minutes’ notice. For a single encoder that must stay live, On-Demand is the simpler, more predictable starting point. Neither option alone guarantees an uninterrupted YouTube stream: a fair comparison includes failover capacity, recovery work, and other AWS charges—not just the hourly instance rate.
What you are comparing
EC2 Spot uses spare AWS capacity. Its price varies by instance type and capacity pool, and AWS advertises savings of up to 90% versus On-Demand. That is a maximum, not a guaranteed discount for a particular instance in India. Spot capacity can be interrupted when AWS needs it; availability varies with supply and demand, and past availability does not guarantee future supply. AWS’s EC2 Spot guidance describes the trade-off.

On-Demand has a fixed listed rate for the selected configuration and no long-term commitment. AWS recommends it for workloads that cannot be interrupted. It avoids Spot reclamation, but it does not prevent encoder software failures, host or network problems, or a YouTube ingest issue. AWS’s On-Demand documentation explains the purchase model.

For 24/7 YouTube streaming, the key question is not simply which rate is lower. It is whether the lower Spot compute cost still wins after you account for the design needed to meet your acceptable interruption and recovery target.

How to estimate the monthly cost in India
There is no meaningful single “India monthly price” without a specified EC2 setup and pricing date. Region alone is not enough: the instance type and size, operating system, Availability Zone, runtime, and—if using Spot—the capacity pool all affect the calculation. Check AWS’s live pricing for the precise configuration before budgeting; Spot prices vary by Region and instance type. AWS Spot pricing provides current Spot price information.
Start with the compute estimate
- Choose the AWS Region and Availability Zone you intend to use.
- Select an instance type and size suitable for your encoder and video workload, plus the operating system.
- For Spot, identify the relevant capacity pool and check its current rate. For On-Demand, check the listed rate for the same configuration.
- Multiply the selected hourly rate by 24 hours and by the number of days in your billing period. This is a first-pass compute estimate, not a full bill.
Add costs outside the instance rate
Budget separately for storage volumes and snapshots, network data transfer, IP addresses if applicable, monitoring, taxes, and any failover or standby capacity. These items can change the total materially; the compute rate by itself is not the price of an always-available streaming service.

Compare equivalent service levels. A single On-Demand encoder is one scenario. A Spot-based design that can recover may need a second pool, replacement or standby capacity, automation, and time spent operating failover. Comparing that complete design with one On-Demand rate—or treating Spot’s advertised maximum discount as your actual saving—would not be apples to apples.

Will Spot interrupt a live YouTube stream?
It can. AWS ordinarily sends a two-minute interruption notice before reclaiming a Spot Instance. AWS also documents a rebalance recommendation that can signal elevated interruption risk earlier, but it is not a guarantee that a replacement will be available. Design automation to respond to interruption and rebalance signals; do not depend on a person manually rebuilding an encoder within two minutes. A stream encoder is a poor fit for Spot if it is a single, tightly coupled process and viewers cannot tolerate it stopping. Spot is more plausible when the encoding job is restartable or the stream can move across instance types and Availability Zones, with tested recovery that makes a brief outage acceptable. AWS advises flexibility across instance types and Availability Zones and fault-tolerant design; capacity remains uncertain.
When On-Demand is the more straightforward choice
For one persistent encoder feeding a channel where an interruption is costly, On-Demand is easier to reason about: AWS will not reclaim the instance as Spot capacity. That is a compute-capacity distinction, not an end-to-end availability guarantee. If continuity matters, consider a second encoder and tested failover, and monitor YouTube stream health. Spot can be part of a resilient design
AWS has published a live-streaming case study describing a containerized architecture using EC2 Spot. It shows that Spot can be an ingredient in a system designed around resilience; it does not establish that a lone Spot encoder will stay live or that Spot is suitable for every always-on channel. AWS’s Quortex live-streaming case study is an architectural example, not a price benchmark.

Your YouTube bitrate and encoding settings help define the encoder workload and required upload capacity; they do not determine EC2’s hourly rate by themselves. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not EC2 instance specifications or estimates of bandwidth delivered to viewers. YouTube’s setup uses a server URL and stream key, and encoder software or standalone hardware can provide the stream. The documentation does not make any one encoder product necessary for this pricing decision. YouTube’s encoder settings guide has the current setup details.
Do not mix EC2 compute with Amazon IVS delivery charges
Amazon IVS is a separate managed video service with its own delivery pricing. Its India delivery-hour rates are not EC2 instance prices and are not an automatic charge for sending an EC2 encoder to YouTube. Keep EC2 compute and any managed streaming service costs in separate estimates. If you are evaluating IVS as a different distribution option, use its own pricing table rather than adding those rates to a YouTube EC2-encoder calculation.
