Debug on the device where the problem occurs: select the physical phone or tablet as the run destination, reproduce the issue, then inspect execution with the platform debugger. Use simulator testing for fast iteration and broad virtual configurations, but verify hardware-sensitive behavior on real devices. Apple warns that simulators do not reproduce all physical-device features or performance, and recommends testing on one or more devices: Apple’s Xcode documentation.
What to record before debugging
Make the reproduction specific enough that another developer can repeat it. Record the device model, operating-system version, app build and configuration, and the steps that trigger the behavior. Note whether it happens every time or intermittently, and whether it depends on a particular device capability, connection, or state.
- Keep the failing device available during the investigation, if possible.
- Use the same app build and configuration that exhibits the problem.
- Write down the shortest reliable sequence of actions that produces the issue.
Debug an iOS app on a physical device
Run from Xcode
- Connect the iPhone or iPad to the Mac and make it available to Xcode.
- In Xcode, choose the connected device as the run destination for the app’s scheme.
- Build and run. After a successful build, Xcode launches the app on the selected device and opens a debugger session.
- Set a breakpoint close to the failing behavior. Reproduce the issue, then step through the code and inspect variables in Xcode’s debug area.
For the current device and project setup details, follow Apple’s instructions for running on a simulated or physical device. Exact prompts and device availability can depend on the installed Xcode and iOS versions.
Use logs and crash reports for failures you cannot catch live
A live debugger is most useful when you can reproduce the issue while the app is running under Xcode. For an intermittent failure or a crash that has already happened, inspect device logs and crash reports instead. Apple says a crash report describes how the app terminated and the code running on each thread at the time; logs can also help investigate problems that do not end in a crash. Connect and debug an Android device
Enable device debugging and connect
- On the Android device, enable Developer options, then enable device debugging. The setting names and locations vary by Android release and device manufacturer.
- Choose a connection method: connect over USB, or use Android’s documented wireless debugging route when supported by the device and development setup.
- For USB, use a cable that supports data transfer and fits both the device and host connectors. A charging-only cable will not provide the wired debugging connection.
- Open the project in Android Studio and select the connected device as the deployment target. Confirm any device prompt needed to authorize the development computer.
- Run or attach to the app, set a breakpoint near the suspected failure, and reproduce it.
Android’s physical-device setup guide covers USB and wireless connection options. Paths differ across devices. In particular, Android’s developer-options documentation says Wireless debugging is under Settings > System > Developer options on Android 16 (API level 36) and later; confirm the location on the actual target device: Android Developer options.
Inspect Java and native code
Android Studio supports Java and LLDB debuggers for inspecting Java and native code. Set a breakpoint in the relevant part of the app, launch or attach the appropriate debugger, then step through execution and inspect values around the failure. When the bug appears only on a phone
First check whether the difference is tied to real hardware, device performance, operating-system behavior, or the exact app state. A simulator is useful for quick iteration and exploring virtual configurations, but it cannot stand in for every physical-device feature or performance characteristic. Apple explicitly recommends verification on physical devices. Compare the failing device against a simulator or another device using the same app build and as similar a reproduction sequence as possible.
- Hardware-dependent behavior: reproduce on a device that has the relevant physical capability; a simulator may not provide an equivalent.
- Performance-sensitive behavior: measure and reproduce on the target hardware rather than assuming simulator timing represents phone performance.
- Device- or OS-specific behavior: preserve the exact model and OS version in the bug report and test another relevant device or version to narrow the scope.
Capture evidence when the debugger is not enough
For intermittent or post-crash issues, preserve the logs or crash report together with the device model, OS version, app build and reproduction steps. This context helps distinguish a repeatable code-path problem from a device-specific or timing-sensitive failure. Apple’s crash reports include termination information and thread state at the time of the crash. On Android, use Android Studio’s debugging workflow and device tools to inspect the running process and retain the relevant diagnostic details.

Expand coverage beyond devices you own
If an issue is limited to a device model you do not have, or appears only across a subset of devices, Android’s physical-device guide points to Firebase Test Lab for testing on a wider range of real devices hosted in the cloud. Check the service’s current availability and terms directly before planning a test workflow; the Android guide establishes it as an option, not its current pricing or availability for every developer. Troubleshooting connection and debugging problems
The Android device does not appear in Android Studio
- Check that Developer options and device debugging are enabled.
- For USB, verify the cable supports data, the connectors fit, and the device is connected to the host.
- Check the device for an authorization prompt and confirm the computer if one appears.
- If using wireless debugging, verify that the device and Android Studio setup follow the documented wireless path; menu locations vary by OS version and manufacturer.
The issue cannot be reproduced under a debugger
Record the exact trigger steps and switch to post-incident evidence: device logs and, for crashes, the crash report. Include the device, OS, and app-build details so the failure can be compared with a later reproduction.

The simulator works but the physical device does not
Keep the physical device as the source of truth for hardware-dependent behavior and performance. Reproduce there with the debugger or collect logs and crash data if the problem is intermittent; do not treat simulator success as proof that the device behavior is correct.
