You do not lose debugging concepts when you leave VS Code; you have to connect them to the debugger and runtime more explicitly. In Neovim, the shortest route for a GDB-based workflow is the built-in Termdebug plugin. If you want an editor-integrated workflow using the Debug Adapter Protocol (DAP), nvim-dap can provide it, but you must install and configure a compatible adapter as well. The right choice depends on your language, debugger, operating system and project—not just your editor.
What changes when you leave VS Code
Breakpoints, stepping through execution, inspecting state, passing arguments and attaching to a process are not VS Code-specific ideas. What changes is how much of the machinery the editor sets up for you and where you configure it. The work is best approached as a translation: identify the debugger and launch details behind your existing setup, then reproduce the minimum required pieces in the terminal editor.

Microsoft documents debugging support for JavaScript, TypeScript and Node.js in VS Code; for other languages and runtimes, users generally add a debugger extension. The VS Code interface can therefore hide which debugger is doing the work and how it is launched. Its basic workflow still provides a useful checklist: set a breakpoint, start a debug session, and use a launch configuration when the program needs a custom entry point, arguments or other setup.
A terminal-editor setup may involve four components: the editor, a debugger client or interface, an adapter when using DAP, and the debugger or language runtime. They must fit together. Installing an editor plugin alone does not guarantee that a suitable debugger or adapter is installed, available on your PATH and compatible with the project.

Inventory the working VS Code setup first
Before changing editors, record what the current setup actually launches. A simple program may run as the active file; if it needs a custom entry point, arguments, environment or other setup, Microsoft’s VS Code debugging guide says a launch configuration is needed. Treat your existing launch configuration as a record of the behavior to reproduce, not as a file that can automatically be copied into a different editor.
- Language and runtime: note what is being debugged, including whether the target is a native executable or a managed/runtime-based program.
- Debugger: identify the actual debugger selected by VS Code or its extension. The editor’s interface may not make this implementation obvious.
- Target: record the executable or launch target and how it is produced.
- Launch context: capture the working directory, command-line arguments and environment variables that the program expects.
- Session type: establish whether you launch a new program or attach to an existing process, and whether remote debugging is involved.
- Input and output: note where the target reads input and writes output. Debugger commands and program I/O may need separate terminals.
This inventory narrows the choice. If the existing debugger is GDB and direct interaction with GDB is acceptable, Termdebug is a straightforward Neovim route. If you want an editor-integrated client and a compatible adapter exists for your language and debugger, nvim-dap is another route.
Choose between Termdebug and nvim-dap
| Decision point | Termdebug | nvim-dap |
|---|---|---|
| Core model | Neovim’s documented plugin workflow wraps GDB and uses separate debugger and program terminals. | A Neovim DAP client communicates with a debug adapter, which connects to the debugger or runtime. |
| Setup shape | Load Termdebug and launch GDB with a command or target. | Install and configure nvim-dap, then install and configure a compatible adapter for the language and runtime. |
| Debugger interaction | Issue debugger commands in GDB’s terminal; the target runs in its program terminal. | Use the editor’s DAP client workflow, with the adapter handling communication to the debugger or runtime. |
| Coverage | Fits projects for which GDB is the appropriate debugger. | Can serve other language and debugger combinations where a suitable adapter is available; support is not universal. |
| Version consideration | Depends on the installed GDB and the program’s toolchain. | Depends on the selected adapter and its requirements. The nvim-dap GDB setup cited for C, C++ and Rust requires GDB 14.0 or later. |
Pick Termdebug for a direct GDB workflow
Termdebug is documented by Neovim as a way to debug a program with GDB while viewing source in a Vim window. It opens a debugger terminal and a program terminal while leaving source available in the editor. When execution pauses, Neovim highlights the source location if it can resolve it. This arrangement is useful when you want to see the program’s source but are comfortable typing GDB commands directly.

The documented entry points are :packadd termdebug, then :Termdebug or :TermdebugCommand followed by a command. The exact command depends on your program and launch needs; use the Termdebug documentation for the accepted command syntax rather than assuming a VS Code launch configuration maps directly to it.
Pick nvim-dap when a suitable adapter exists
The Debug Adapter Protocol is a JSON-message protocol between a development tool, such as an editor, and a debug adapter. Microsoft describes DAP as the protocol used between a development tool and a debugger; its specification page identifies version 1.71.0, without stating a publication year on that page. nvim-dap is a Neovim client for this model. The adapter is a separate dependency and must work with the language, runtime and debugger you intend to use.
The nvim-dap project wiki includes a GDB adapter example for C, C++ and Rust. For that documented GDB route, it requires GDB 14.0 or later. The setup notes identify lldb-dap as the modern LLDB adapter binary. These are route-specific details, not a promise that every operating system or installed debugger provides the same executable or setup. Check the current nvim-dap instructions and the selected adapter’s documentation before copying an example.

Build a minimal debugging session
Start with one small program or a minimal reproducer rather than reproducing every option from a complex launch setup at once. The point is to establish each layer independently: the program can be built and started, the debugger can reach it, and the editor can show the relevant source.
- Confirm the target exists. Build the executable you intend to debug and check that the configured target points to that file. If the project uses a debug build, verify that you are launching that build rather than a stale or release executable.
- Check debug information. Ensure the build includes suitable debug symbols for the debugger and toolchain. Without useful symbols, source locations and program state may be difficult or impossible to inspect as expected.
- Choose the interface. For a GDB-based Termdebug session, load the plugin with
:packadd termdebugand launch it with:Termdebugor:TermdebugCommandand the appropriate command. For DAP, follow the language-specific nvim-dap and adapter setup, including the adapter’s executable and version requirements. - Reproduce launch context. Use the correct working directory and supply the arguments and environment variables the program needs. If the VS Code session attached to a process or used remote debugging, account for that explicitly rather than treating it as an ordinary launch.
- Set one breakpoint that should execute. Choose a line on a path the program reaches. A breakpoint on an unvisited branch cannot confirm that the debugger is configured incorrectly or correctly.
- Start and verify the stop. Confirm that the debugger reaches the breakpoint, that the displayed source location corresponds to the checked-out code, and that stepping moves to the next expected location.
- Check program I/O. Confirm where output appears and where the program expects input. In Termdebug, the target’s program terminal is separate from GDB’s terminal, so enter program input in the former and debugger commands in the latter.
These checks are practical consequences of the documented roles of the editor, debugger and adapter; they are not a claim that one configuration works for every project. Once the minimal session behaves correctly, add the remaining launch details one at a time. That makes a bad argument, path or environment setting easier to isolate.
Translate common VS Code actions
- Set a breakpoint: place it on executable code in the source buffer. If the line is never reached, investigate the program’s execution path before changing adapter settings.
- Start a session: launch through Termdebug or the configured DAP client. The debugger or adapter must be installed and discoverable, not merely represented in editor configuration.
- Pass arguments and environment: reproduce the values from the old launch setup in the new route’s documented configuration or command. There is no general rule that a VS Code
launch.jsonentry is directly reusable in Neovim. - Step and inspect: use the controls offered by the selected route. With Termdebug, the interaction is through GDB; with nvim-dap, the editor communicates through the adapter. Both rely on the debugger being able to interpret the target and its symbols.
- Handle input: identify the target’s terminal separately from the debugger interface if the program reads from standard input. A session can be running correctly even when input is being sent to the wrong terminal.
- Attach or debug remotely: verify that the chosen debugger and adapter support the required session type. The fact that an editor client supports DAP does not establish that every adapter supports every attach or remote-debug scenario.
Troubleshoot in dependency order
When a session fails, check the components from the outside in. First establish that the executable and debugger exist, then check adapter compatibility if using DAP, then test launch context and source mapping. Changing several layers at once makes the failure harder to diagnose.

The debugger or adapter is not found
Check that the required program is installed and available on PATH, and verify the executable name configured for the session. An adapter name in an example may not match the binary installed on your operating system. For LLDB, the nvim-dap setup notes refer to the modern adapter binary as lldb-dap; verify your installed version and the adapter’s current instructions.
DAP startup fails
Check the adapter’s documented requirements, including the debugger version. In the nvim-dap documentation’s cited GDB setup, GDB must be version 14.0 or later. That requirement should not be generalized to unrelated adapters or Termdebug configurations. If the debugger is too old or the adapter points to a different executable, align those dependencies before revising the program’s launch arguments.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A breakpoint does not stop
First confirm that the program actually executes the chosen line. Then check that you launched the intended debug build and that it contains useful symbols. Inspect the debugger’s own output for errors. Neither the editor nor the protocol can make an unreachable line execute; the source documentation does not establish one universal fix for every missed breakpoint.
Best Value
The debugger stops but source is missing or misplaced
Check whether the debugger can map the running binary to the source path in your current checkout. This can matter when a binary was built from a different directory or source tree. Termdebug’s documentation qualifies source display with “if possible”; a successful pause does not by itself guarantee that the editor can resolve every source location.
The program appears stuck while waiting for input
Check which terminal belongs to the target process. Termdebug intentionally separates the GDB terminal from the program terminal. Send input to the program window, not to GDB’s command interface. For other adapters, consult their documentation for how target I/O is presented.
What to verify before copying a configuration
- Does the example target the same language and runtime as your project?
- Does it use the same debugger, and is the debugger installed at the expected executable path?
- Does the adapter support your operating system and the session type you need?
- Does its documentation specify a minimum debugger version?
- Are the executable, working directory, arguments and environment appropriate for your project?
- Does the setup account for source paths and target input/output?
nvim-dap configuration is adapter-dependent, and the project’s wiki can change. A snippet for one language or operating system is a starting point only when those assumptions match your setup. Confirm version-sensitive details in the current adapter documentation rather than treating an old example as a universal configuration.

Which route should you use?
Choose Termdebug when GDB is the right debugger for your program and a separate debugger terminal is acceptable. It offers the most direct documented transition for that case: load the plugin, launch GDB, keep source visible, and use the program terminal for target I/O. Choose nvim-dap when you want a DAP-based editor workflow and have confirmed that a compatible adapter exists for your language, debugger and operating system. Its broader potential depends on adapter availability, and that flexibility comes with additional installation and configuration work.
In either case, do not begin by recreating every part of a mature VS Code launch setup. Identify what that setup actually does, establish a minimal session, and add its custom launch behavior in small, testable pieces. The move is not from “debugging” to “no debugging”; it is from a more bundled workflow to one where the connections among editor, adapter, debugger and runtime are more visible.
