How to Debug a Happo Visual Test That Fails Only in CI

A CI-only Happo failure may be a genuine visual change or a capture problem. Start by classifying the report, then compare commands, targets, resources, and logs.

First determine whether Happo produced a completed screenshot diff or whether the snap request failed or captured incomplete content. A real diff needs visual review; a failed or partial capture needs investigation of the CI command, configuration, target, resources, and page readiness. Without the report and CI artifacts, there is no reliable way to name one root cause.

Classify the failure before changing code

Open the Happo report and note the failing component and target. Then establish which of these cases you have:

  • Completed comparison with changed pixels: inspect the before-and-after images. Treat the difference as a candidate product change until you judge whether it is expected, material, or rendering noise.
  • Snap request errored, timed out, or captured incomplete content: investigate execution and page readiness rather than adjusting CSS based on an image that may not represent the finished page.

Happo describes visual diffs and side-by-side comparisons as ways to review changes. Its September 2026 report-log announcement says logs can help investigate snap-request errors as well as less obvious image, font, and asynchronous failures. The report’s exact component, target, and log lines matter: a failure alone does not establish its cause.

Compare the CI run with the successful local run

Write down the commands and inputs for both runs rather than relying on memory. Compare one category at a time so a change in outcome points to a useful difference.

  • Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
  • Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)
  • Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call
  • Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
  • Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
  1. Command and setup: compare working directory, package manager and install state, build and start steps, selected Happo configuration, and exact test command. Happo’s public package repository documents CLI invocation and automatic configuration-file discovery.
  2. Configuration and credentials: check that CI loads the intended configuration, project, and targets, and that required credentials are available to the job. The public repository’s sample uses HAPPO_API_KEY and HAPPO_API_SECRET. Confirm presence without printing secret values in logs.
  3. Target and viewport: identify whether the failure affects one browser or viewport, or all of them. Happo documents desktop targets including Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari, and accessibility, as well as mobile Safari targets and viewport settings. Compare the failing target with a passing one before changing shared styles.
  4. Page inputs: compare the data, images, fonts, and other resources available to the page in CI with those available locally. A successful local render does not show that CI received the same resources.

Use report logs to investigate capture problems

For the failing component, search the report-log context around the relevant snap request. Happo announced a unified, searchable logs page for report snap requests in September 2026. Look for evidence tied to the component and request, including:

  • Request errors or failed loads.
  • Missing images or image 404s.
  • Fonts that load late or fail to load.
  • Asynchronous work that completes after the capture.

A log message about a missing image is a lead to check resource delivery, not proof that every failure in the report has the same cause. Likewise, a font wait or unfinished task needs to be read in the context of the exact request and page state. Happo says it waits for fonts and assets as part of its flake-reduction behavior; logs can still expose specific resource or asynchronous problems.

Review dynamic content and rendering noise

Animations and changing content

Check for time-dependent values, random ordering, rotating content, or motion that can change what appears at capture time. Happo documents animation-silencing options and describes silencing animations as a way to control noise. Use such a control when motion is the identified source of an unstable frame, not as a substitute for investigating a failed request or missing content.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Color-delta tolerance

Happo offers color-delta tolerance to suppress small rendering differences such as anti-aliasing or image-compression noise. Review the actual diff first and decide whether the difference is immaterial. A threshold can suppress a small real regression as well as harmless pixel variation, so do not raise it just to make a failing status disappear.

Interpret what the comparisons show

  • Consistent, localized layout, color, or typography change in a completed comparison: review it as a possible visual regression. Happo presents visual testing as complementary to functional and end-to-end assertions; a passing functional check does not establish that the page still looks right.
  • Failure confined to one target: compare that target’s browser and viewport settings with a passing target before modifying shared CSS.
  • Snap-request error or log evidence of missing or late resources: trace the specific request, asset, or asynchronous work shown by the report.
  • Failures clustered around external requests: Happo’s September 23, 2026 homepage announcement describes an option to allow-list hostnames that snapshot requests may contact. Happo reported that one unnamed customer went from about 2,000 flaky examples to about 20 after using it. This is a vendor-reported example for one customer, not a general expected result or independently measured benchmark.

Make one controlled change and rerun

  1. Keep the same CI workflow and failing target.
  2. Change one suspected input, such as the selected configuration, a specific resource-delivery issue, or an identified animation source.
  3. Rerun and compare the new report with the previous one, including whether the screenshot completed and whether the relevant log evidence changed.
  4. If the result is unchanged, revert or set aside that change and test the next supported hypothesis rather than layering unrelated fixes.

This method helps isolate variables; it does not guarantee that a rerun will identify the cause. A specific diagnosis requires the report, CI logs, configuration, and failing target.

Troubleshooting by symptom

What you see What to check next
A completed diff with a stable, localized change Inspect the changed component and decide whether the visual difference is intended. Compare the target and viewport before editing styles.
A snap request errors or times out Read the report-log lines around that request; compare CI’s command, configuration, and credentials with the local run.
An image is missing or returns 404 Check whether the CI page can retrieve that asset and whether the report logs show a failed request.
Text differs or a font appears late Check font availability and loading in the captured page; use the report-log context to distinguish a font issue from a completed visual change.
Only one browser or viewport fails Compare that target’s browser and viewport configuration with a passing target.
The diff changes between captures Look for time-dependent values, random ordering, rotating content, animation, or asynchronous work that is not complete at capture time.
Differences appear to be tiny pixel-level noise Review the diff before considering color-delta tolerance; verify that suppressing those pixels would not hide a meaningful change.
Failures cluster around external requests Inspect which hosts the snapshot needs and whether the documented hostname allow-list option applies to those requests.
