A 403 during a screenshot run does not, by itself, prove that login failed. First identify the exact request receiving the status, then verify authentication in the automation browser context, and finally check whether that account is allowed to access the requested resource. The right fix depends on the response and trace; a screenshot alone cannot establish the cause.
What a 403 means in a screenshot workflow
RFC 9110 defines 403 Forbidden as a response indicating that the server understood the request but refuses to fulfill it. The RFC notes that credentials may be insufficient, but a request can also be forbidden for reasons unrelated to credentials. A 403 is therefore not synonymous with a failed login.

When a person can open a site interactively but a capture run fails, the interactive browser and the automation context may not share cookies, local storage, account, network, or other state. Alternatively, the automation may be signed in but lack access to a particular page. Determine which request failed before choosing between these possibilities.
Find the exact request that returned 403
Inspect the browser Network panel or a Playwright trace. Record the request URL, method, status, redirect sequence, response body, and relevant request and response headers. Redact cookies, authorization values, account identifiers, and personal data before sharing logs or traces.

- Redirect: a redirect destination or an intermediate request was refused; record the final URL as well as the sequence.
- API request: the page may load while a data call it needs receives 403.
- Embedded resource: an image or other asset may fail after the document succeeds. That is different from a 403 on the page navigation.
In Playwright, page.goto() can return a response whose HTTP status is an error; do not assume a 403 will be thrown as an exception. Check the returned response explicitly. A null response is possible for some navigation cases, so guard it:

Use a trace or developer tools to find failures that occur in API calls or assets and correlate them with the navigation and screenshot timing. Check authentication in the same Playwright context
A normal browser profile and a Playwright browser context are separate. Verify the capture context completes the site’s authorized login flow and is signed in before saving or reusing state. Playwright recommends waiting for an expected final URL or a visible signed-in element; redirects can be part of the process that sets authentication cookies.

- Run the authorized login flow in the capture context. Do not assume that being signed in in your regular browser signs in the automation context.
- Wait for completion. Confirm the expected final URL or a stable signed-in UI element before saving state.
- Persist the state the application actually uses. Playwright storage state covers cookies and local storage, and can include IndexedDB when requested. If authentication depends on sessionStorage, use the separate save-and-restore technique in Playwright’s authentication guide; the standard storage-state API does not cover it.
- Validate state for the target URL. Check cookie domain, path, expiry, and secure settings, and verify that the saved state has not expired.
- Regenerate expired or incomplete state. Repeat the authorized login flow and save state only after login completes.
Playwright’s authentication guide documents storage-state use and sessionStorage handling. Its BrowserContext API documents cookie fields and storage-state operations. Authentication state files may contain live cookies or other secrets capable of impersonating an account: exclude them from version control and keep them out of logs and shared artifacts. A least-privileged test account reduces the impact if state is exposed.

Separate login problems from permission problems
Once the automation context appears signed in, test a harmless page known to be available to that account using the same context. Compare its result with the requested resource:

| The known-permitted page and target both fail | Check whether the automation context has valid state, whether login actually completed, and whether the same account and execution context are being used. |
| The known-permitted page works, but the target fails | Check the account’s role, tenant, entitlement, and permission for that specific resource or URL. |
| The document works, but an API request or asset fails | Investigate that request’s response and the permission or policy governing that endpoint or resource; do not label the whole navigation a 403. |
A valid session does not guarantee access to every page. If account permissions do not explain the refusal, preserve the response and ask the site administrator whether the account, network origin, or automation workflow is permitted. Treat these as questions to verify, not assumptions about a particular site’s policy.

Make the failure reproducible with a trace
For a minimal reproduction, capture a Playwright trace around the navigation and screenshot. Traces can expose actions, snapshots, logs, and network requests, helping correlate the failing request with the browser’s execution context. Browser developer tools can also show DOM, console, and network activity. Review traces before sharing: redact cookies, bearer tokens, account identifiers, and personal data. - Assuming a screenshot proves the document was forbidden: identify whether the 403 belongs to the document, a redirect, an API call, or an embedded resource.
- Reusing a browser login without transferring its state: authenticate the automation context through an authorized flow and confirm the signed-in result there.
- Saving state too early: wait for the final URL or signed-in UI; redirects may set cookies as login completes.
- Ignoring sessionStorage or IndexedDB: determine where the application stores auth state; use Playwright’s documented handling for the storage type involved.
- Repeating the same request with unchanged credentials: RFC 9110 says a client should not automatically repeat a 403 request with the same credentials. Gather evidence and take an authorized next step instead.
- Trying to bypass site controls: do not use CAPTCHA bypass, stolen cookies, or access-control evasion. Ask the site’s owner or administrator to authorize the workflow.

FAQ
Why am I getting a 403 when logged in?
The session may be missing or expired in the automation context, or the signed-in account may not have permission for the particular resource. A 403 can also arise for reasons unrelated to credentials, so inspect the response and request context before deciding.

Not necessarily. A navigation response can have status 403 without being thrown as an exception, while a subrequest can fail even if navigation succeeds. Check the response status and trace or network activity.
Can Playwright storageState restore every kind of login state?
No. It handles cookies and local storage and can include IndexedDB when requested; sessionStorage needs a separate save-and-restore approach documented by Playwright.
Should I retry a logged-in screenshot that returns Forbidden?
Do not automatically repeat the same 403 request with unchanged credentials. Identify the failing request, inspect state and access, and pursue an authorized fix.
