You can lower grocery costs without giving up a varied, nutritious diet: start with food you already have, plan meals and leftovers, then shop a list and compare similar items by unit price. Use beans, frozen or canned produce, and store brands where they fit your meals; buy in bulk only when you can store and use the food.
Start with a realistic grocery budget
There is no single grocery bill that defines a healthy diet. USDA’s Food Plans model nutrient-dense foods and beverages at four cost levels: Thrifty, Low-Cost, Moderate-Cost, and Liberal. USDA describes the Thrifty Food Plan as a way to support a healthy diet on a limited budget. Its estimates are national benchmarks based on average food prices, not a forecast of what your household will pay at a local store.

For a dated reference, USDA’s July 2026 estimate for the Thrifty Food Plan was $58.60 per week, or $253.90 per month, for a woman aged 20–50; for a man aged 20–50, it was $73.30 per week, or $317.40 per month. Those amounts apply to the specified age and sex groups, are rounded to the nearest ten cents, and may not match local prices or an individual household’s needs. USDA updates cost levels monthly using the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers; the Thrifty plan’s market basket was last updated in 2021, and Alaska and Hawaii adjustments were published in 2023. The higher-cost plans use older underlying market-basket work, so their estimates are not methodologically interchangeable with the Thrifty plan. See USDA Food Plans and monthly cost reports.

Plan the week around food you already own
Before making a list, check the refrigerator, freezer, and cupboards. Note what needs using soon, then build meals around those ingredients. Choose a few overlapping ingredients that can work in more than one meal, and decide when leftovers will be eaten. Planning around busy days can also make it less likely that food bought for cooking goes unused.
#1 Best Overall
Write down the meals and ingredients you need, grouping the list by store section or food group if that makes shopping easier. Add staples as they run out, rather than buying duplicates just because they are on sale. A paper planner is optional: a notes app, calendar, or free MyPlate weekly calendar and grocery list template can do the job. MyPlate recommends planning meals and making an organized list to help you choose healthy options and stay organized.
Choose a practical mix of fresh, frozen, canned, and dried foods
Different forms of produce can suit different prices, recipes, and storage needs. Fresh food may be right for meals you will make soon; frozen or shelf-stable choices can be useful for later in the week or when fresh items might spoil before you use them. USDA MyPlate says frozen fruits and vegetables are picked ripe and frozen quickly. For canned fruit, look for packing in water or 100% juice; for canned vegetables, look for no-salt-added or low-sodium options. Check the Nutrition Facts label when a nutrient such as sodium, added sugars, or saturated fat matters to your choice. MyPlate’s Shop Smart guidance covers budget-friendly choices across food groups.
Build meals from fruits, vegetables, grains, protein foods, and dairy or fortified soy alternatives. Beans can stretch a dish while adding fiber, and canned or frozen vegetables can add vegetables to soups, stews, pasta, and other meals. Choose the form that fits the recipe and how quickly you can use it; fresh is not automatically the cheapest or best option for every meal.

Compare prices without buying food you will waste
Use unit prices for like-for-like comparisons
Unit prices help compare similar products in different package sizes. Compare products that serve the same purpose, and look at the quantity you are likely to use. A larger package is only a better buy if you can store it properly and use it before it spoils or loses quality.
Rank #3
Use sales, coupons, and store brands selectively
Sales, in-season produce, coupons, store brands, and loyalty discounts can make planned purchases less expensive. Check whether the deal matches a meal on your list, then compare the product’s unit price and label with alternatives. A discount is not a saving if it leads to an unneeded purchase or food that gets thrown away.
Buy shelf-stable and frozen foods in bulk only when practical
Dried beans, whole grains, canned goods, and frozen vegetables may suit bulk buying when you have adequate storage and a realistic plan to use them. Avoid overbuying perishables or large packages simply because the price per unit looks lower. The useful comparison is the cost of food you will actually eat, not just the sticker price or package size.
