What to Do If You Fail the Mexico City Driver’s License Theory Exam

If you fail the theory evaluation for a Mexico City permanent driver’s license, SEMOVI says you can repeat it. Use SEMOVI’s current licensing and appointment route, review its official study guide, and confirm the current retake details before traveling: the agency’s FAQ does not state a waiting period, retake fee, or total attempt limit.

Who needs to take the evaluation?

SEMOVI’s first-time permanent-license information says applicants with an address in Mexico City or the State of Mexico who have never held a CDMX-issued license must take the evaluation. The FAQ describes it as a theoretical assessment and directs applicants to book at a Macromódulo.

The FAQ also contains a statement that the program began on November 16, 2024 and would end in December 2025. That end-date wording conflicts with SEMOVI’s later notice that permanent-license services continued at modules in June 2026. Confirm your eligibility and current appointment availability with SEMOVI rather than relying on the older end date.

How to arrange a retake

  1. Open SEMOVI’s permanent-license information and appointment route. Its FAQ names the appointment option “Evaluación de licencia permanente.” Check that the option and a suitable slot are currently available.

  2. Study the official guide linked from SEMOVI’s licensing information, focusing on its traffic and road-safety material. The official sources do not establish that you need to buy a commercial book.

  3. Use SEMOVI’s current booking route to schedule or confirm your evaluation. A June 5, 2026 SEMOVI notice said appointments for permanent, Type A, and Type B license services could be made online using Llave or in person. It listed weekday service hours as 9:00–14:00 and 15:00–17:00, and Saturday hours as 9:00–13:00. Check current hours and slots before going; the notice confirms service at that time, not future availability.

  4. If you need to know the waiting period, permitted attempts, fee, current test format, or required identification and documents, ask SEMOVI directly before attending. The current FAQ does not give these retake details.

  5. Retake the evaluation. If you pass, continue with the remaining application steps and meet the applicable documentation requirements; SEMOVI’s FAQ says passing comes first.

What is known—and not known—about retakes

SEMOVI’s FAQ says applicants who fail can repeat the assessment: “Tendrás la oportunidad de repetirlo para poder acreditarlo.” It does not specify how long to wait, how many retakes are allowed in total, or whether a retake has a fee. Do not assume those details without current confirmation from the agency.

Are the 2024 exam rules still current?

A December 3, 2024 announcement from the Agencia Digital de Innovación Pública and SEMOVI described an online exam with 20 randomly selected questions from a pool of more than 200, a 25-minute limit, and a minimum passing grade of 8.0. It also described a second attempt after an initial failure and a limit of two opportunities per day. Those figures are historical details, not verified current rules.

SEMOVI’s FAQ instead describes a theoretical evaluation at a Macromódulo, while its June 2026 service notice confirms licensing services but does not clarify the current exam format or retake limits. The available information therefore does not establish that the former online format, timing, score, or attempt cap still applies. Confirm the current format and rules with SEMOVI before relying on them.
