You can shorten a video without altering its source file. The key choice is whether to keep the cut as a reversible edit in a project, or to create a separate trimmed file. Project editing preserves the full source for later revisions; a cutter or FFmpeg can make a new output without another encode when stream-copy boundaries work. Re-encoding creates a more flexible export, but encoding settings affect its quality and size.
What “without touching the original” can mean
There are two practical interpretations. A non-destructive editor stores your trim as project information and leaves the source media available. A cutter or command-line tool instead writes a shortened file while leaving the input file unchanged. In either case, save the result to a different filename and location from the source.

“Without re-exporting” is sometimes used to mean avoiding another encode. Stream copy can do that, but it is different from keeping an editable project: it produces a separate file, and its cut points can be limited by the way the video is encoded.

1. Keep the trim in an editor project
A project-based editor records which portions of source clips to use rather than deleting the unused footage. In Final Cut Pro, the clips in a project point to source media; trimming or deleting a portion changes project information, while the underlying media remains available. Apple’s Final Cut Pro User Guide puts it plainly: “No matter how you edit clips in Final Cut Pro, the underlying media is never touched.”

This is the clearest option when you may revise the cut, combine footage, or add transitions and effects. The project is the edit; a shareable video file still generally needs to be rendered or exported separately.
2. Use a visual lossless cutter
A GUI cutter lets you select ranges visually and save the kept sections as a separate output. LosslessCut describes its cutting and rearranging as near-direct data copy and supports saving cut segments in a project file. That can be convenient when the task is mainly removing or extracting sections rather than building a full timeline edit. See the LosslessCut project page for its feature description.

Do not assume every source can be cut at any exact frame without re-encoding. Inter-coded video may depend on earlier packets or keyframes to decode correctly, and LosslessCut marks smart cut as experimental. Check playback around each boundary after saving.
3. Use FFmpeg stream copy
FFmpeg’s stream-copy mode copies encoded packets instead of decoding and encoding them. Its documentation says this is very fast and avoids quality loss from re-encoding because no encode occurs. It is useful when you want a separate file and your chosen boundaries and output container work with the source streams. Read FFmpeg’s documentation on stream copy.

Stream copy is not a universal frame-accurate cutting method. FFmpeg warns that container and stream compatibility can prevent an operation, and filters cannot be applied to copied packets. Its codec options documentation explains the relevant constraints. If a boundary is unsuitable, playback fails, or you need an effect or filter, use a workflow that decodes and re-encodes instead.
4. Export a re-encoded clip
A conventional export decodes the source, applies edits or filters, and encodes a new file. Keep the original at its existing path and choose a distinct output filename. This approach offers room for effects, format conversion, and cut boundaries that packet-copy mode cannot handle acceptably.

Encoding is typically lossy, although lossless encoders exist and can produce larger files. A new export does not automatically mean visible degradation: the result depends on the codec, settings, and source. FFmpeg’s stream-copy documentation distinguishes copying packets from encoding; its codec options documentation describes the limits that can make a different workflow necessary.

How to choose
- Keep the edit reversible: use a project-based editor and retain the source media if you may change the trim later.
- Prefer a visual interface for a simple cut: try a GUI cutter, save to a new filename, and inspect the output near each cut.
- Prefer a quick, repeatable command-line workflow: try FFmpeg stream copy if packet boundaries and container compatibility are adequate; save to a distinct output file and check playback.
- Switch approaches if the result is wrong or you need processing: if a boundary is unsuitable, playback breaks, the output container rejects the streams, or a filter or effect is required, use a decoded and re-encoded export or return to a timeline editor.
For valuable footage, keep a separate backup as well as the working source. A non-destructive project protects the media from edits recorded in that project; it is not a substitute for a separate copy.
