To make a custom Nintendo Switch profile icon, open Nintendo Switch Online from the HOME Menu, redeem icon elements in Missions & Rewards with My Nintendo Platinum Points, assemble them in Icon Collection, then select the finished icon there to apply it. Redeeming elements requires an internet connection and an active, paid Nintendo Switch Online membership.
Before you start
- Use a Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, or Nintendo Switch OLED system. Nintendo’s US instructions cover all four models.
- Connect the console to the internet and sign in with the user profile that should receive the elements.
- Have an active, paid Nintendo Switch Online membership and My Nintendo Platinum Points available for any elements that cost points. Some eligibility rules vary by element; check its details on screen.

Redeem icon elements
- Update the console if needed: from the HOME Menu, open System Settings → System → System Update.
- Launch Nintendo Switch Online from the HOME Menu and choose the user who will receive the elements.
- Open Missions & Rewards. Press L or R to browse the games and their available elements.
- Select an element and choose Redeem. The available building blocks are characters, backgrounds, and frames. Generic frames and background colors are available without Platinum Points; game-specific frames and backgrounds may require points.
Offerings rotate: Nintendo says elements refresh weekly and monthly themes feature different elements. The exact selection can change, so rely on the current console screen rather than expecting a particular character or game item. Nintendo’s Missions and Rewards announcement describes the rotating program.

- In Nintendo Switch Online, open Icon Collection with the icon at the top right.
- On the Icons screen, select the + icon and choose a game, or open Icon Elements, select a redeemed element, and choose Use to Create Icon.
- Choose either a suggested combination or Create Your Icon, then select the frame, character, and background you want. Confirm to save the new icon to your collection.
- Select the saved icon in Icon Collection to set it as the profile icon for that user.
Element rules and limits to know
- Eligibility differs by item. Some elements are restricted to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members. Others may require playing the relevant game while the item is available, or playing on at least three separate days within the previous 30 days. Read the individual element and mission conditions.
- Mixing has limits. You can combine elements from the same game, or use generic frames and backgrounds. Elements from unrelated games cannot freely be mixed. If a character element already includes a background, you may not be able to add a separate background.
- Collection capacity: Icon Collection can store up to 100 user icons.
- Redeemed items persist. Once an element is redeemed, it remains accessible even if the membership later ends. Created icons are associated with the Nintendo Account and appear on consoles linked to that same account; elements cannot be shared with other Nintendo Accounts.
Why the custom icon is missing from System Settings
The custom icon maker is separate from the standard profile editor. Nintendo’s regular User Settings workflow lets you change a nickname, choose a character or Mii, or adjust the background; the custom icons made with Nintendo Switch Online are applied only from Nintendo Switch Online → Icon Collection. They do not become choices in System Settings or the User Page’s standard icon picker. See Nintendo’s guide to editing user profile settings for the standard editor.

If you cannot redeem or use an element
- Confirm that you opened Nintendo Switch Online under the user profile that should receive the element.
- Check that the console is online and that the membership is active; the purchase of elements also requires enough Platinum Points where applicable.
- Open the element’s details and review any Expansion Pack, game-play, or recent-activity conditions.
- If a combination will not work, check whether its components come from the same game and whether the character already includes a background.
- After redemption, return to Icon Collection to create and apply the icon; do not look for it in the regular System Settings icon picker.
