Start by identifying where the voice chat is coming from: Xbox party chat or a game’s built-in chat. Party-chat accessibility options are set on the console; game chat, music, and effects usually need to be adjusted inside that game. The available controls and their labels vary by game and Xbox software version.
First, identify which chat you want to change
Xbox party chat is the console’s group voice and text chat. Its speech accessibility features are separate from the audio mixer in an individual game. In-game chat is provided by the game itself, so its voice volume and mute options are generally found in that game’s Audio, Chat, or Accessibility settings. A game may also have separate controls for music and effects.

Use party-chat transcription and text-to-speech
Xbox’s 2021 announcement and June 2021 update documented party-chat speech-to-text and text-to-speech controls at Settings > Ease of Access > Game and chat transcription. Speech-to-text can show other party members’ speech as text; text-to-speech can read aloud a message you type in party chat. See Xbox Wire’s feature announcement and the June 2021 Xbox update.

Balance in-game voice, music, and effects
- Open the game’s own Audio, Sound, or Accessibility menu. The exact menu name and location depend on the game.
- Look for separate sliders or mute controls for voice chat, music, effects, and dialogue. Lower or mute only the category that is masking speech or adding unwanted sound.
- If the game offers only a master-volume control, it may not let you reduce chat independently from the rest of its audio. Check its communication settings as well; controls differ by game.
Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 105 recommends that games provide separate volume controls for audio types such as music, effects, character dialogue, voice chat, and screen readers. This is developer guidance, not confirmation that every game includes every slider. Guideline 120 also addresses communication features such as voice and text chat, whose accessible settings depend in part on how a game implements them.
Handle interface sound effects separately
Menu clicks and other interface sounds are distinct from party chat and a game’s music or effects. Xbox Support has a guide titled “How to mute sound effects,” but its current steps and console menu path are not established here. For the current instructions, consult Xbox Support or follow the live settings shown on your console rather than relying on an unverified click path.

If chat is still difficult to hear
If you use a headset, check the console’s headset or chat-audio options and the headset’s own controls. Which settings appear—and whether they can balance chat against game audio—depends on the connected hardware and current Xbox software. A headset is optional: party-chat accessibility features and a game’s available audio settings do not require you to buy one.
