To change whether Windows 11 groups taskbar buttons or shows labels, right-click an empty area of the taskbar, choose Taskbar settings, expand Taskbar behaviors, then change Combine taskbar buttons and hide labels.
Choose how taskbar buttons are combined
Windows 11 offers three behaviors. The right choice depends on whether you value a compact taskbar or want to see a separate labeled button for each open window.

| Never | Each open window keeps its own labeled button. | Buttons become smaller as the taskbar fills and eventually scroll. |

- Right-click an empty area of the taskbar.
- Select Taskbar settings.
- Expand Taskbar behaviors.
- Open the menu for Combine taskbar buttons and hide labels and select Always, hide labels, When taskbar is full, or Never.
Choose Never to stop Windows from combining taskbar buttons and to show labels for each window. If you want separate buttons only while there is room, choose When taskbar is full.

Set a different behavior for other displays
If you use more than one monitor, Taskbar settings includes a separate combine-buttons choice under Multiple Displays for other taskbars. Use it to choose how buttons behave on those additional displays rather than assuming the main taskbar’s choice applies identically everywhere.
Why you may not see the option
Microsoft announced never-combined taskbar mode in a Windows configuration update dated September 26, 2023. Its documented path was Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors. If the option is missing, check that Windows is up to date and look under Taskbar behaviors. The feature’s availability announcement does not establish which builds or editions currently receive it.

Microsoft’s March 26, 2024 update note documented a fix for labels that could have the wrong length and be cut off with When taskbar is full or Never. The note identified Preview OS Builds 22621.3374 and 22631.3374; it does not establish whether the issue remains on current builds or how widespread it was.
