On a supported iPhone, go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Always On Display to choose whether the dimmed Lock Screen shows wallpaper and notifications. To change its wallpaper, clock, or widgets, edit the Lock Screen itself: touch and hold it, tap Customize, and make your changes.
Choose whether Always-On shows wallpaper and notifications
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display & Brightness.
- Tap Always On Display.
- Turn Show Wallpaper and Show Notifications on or off independently.
These controls let you show both, hide either one, or hide both from the dimmed view. You can also switch Always-On off altogether on supported models. Apple says it is on by default on those models. Labels or placement may differ slightly with iOS version or localization. See Apple’s Always-On display instructions.

Change the wallpaper, clock, or widgets
Always-On is a dimmed version of your Lock Screen, not a separate screen layout. Apple describes it as keeping a dimmed Lock Screen visible while the iPhone is locked, with items such as the date, time, notifications, and widget information available at a glance. Changes to the Lock Screen therefore also change what can appear in its Always-On view.
Recommended Free Tools
- Wake the iPhone so the Lock Screen is visible.
- Touch and hold the Lock Screen, then tap Customize.
- Choose the Lock Screen editing controls. Use the wallpaper controls to change the background and the clock controls to adjust its appearance.
- Tap Add Widgets to browse available widgets, then tap or drag choices into the available slots.
- Finish editing to save the Lock Screen.
The widgets and layout available depend on installed apps and the space in the selected Lock Screen design. Apple’s guides cover personalizing the iPhone, adding and editing widgets, and using features from the Lock Screen.
#1 Best Overall
- Titanium frame combines strength and lightness, giving the iPhone 16 Pro a premium feel while reducing weight for prolonged daily use. The polished edges and textured back enhance grip and handling, making it easier to use during long calls, gaming sessions, or when capturing photos and videos on the move.
Why the Always-On display may turn off
Always-On can go dark automatically in some situations. Apple lists these conditions:
- The iPhone is face down or its display is obstructed.
- The iPhone is away from a paired Apple Watch.
- CarPlay is in use or the iPhone is being used with Continuity Camera.
- Low Power Mode or Sleep Focus is active.
- It is the user’s usual bedtime.
If the screen goes dark, check these conditions before changing your wallpaper or notification settings. Apple’s Always-On guidance describes when it turns off automatically.

Check whether your iPhone supports Always-On
Always-On is limited to supported iPhone models. Apple’s cited documentation confirms support for iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, but those examples do not establish the complete current compatibility list. Look for Settings > Display & Brightness > Always On Display on your iPhone, or check Apple’s support information for your exact model. Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro specifications list the feature, and its Always On design guidance describes Lock Screen items such as widgets and Live Activities on iPhone 14 Pro models.
Always-On and StandBy are different
Always-On presents a dimmed version of the regular Lock Screen while the iPhone is locked. StandBy is a separate charging mode: connect the iPhone to a charger, set it on its side while stationary, and it can show clocks, photos, and widgets in a landscape view. Swipe to move between StandBy views. On supported Always-On models, StandBy can remain visible; on other models, wake it by tapping the display, nudging the table, or asking Siri. A MagSafe charger is not required; Apple says MagSafe can help StandBy remember a preferred view for a charging location. See Apple’s StandBy setup and usage guide.
