Rainmeter adds independent, movable desktop widgets—called skins—to Windows 10 and Windows 11. You can use it for a clock, system monitor, launcher, calendar, weather panel or media controls without replacing Explorer, the taskbar or the Start menu. Install it from the official Rainmeter site or the official GitHub releases page, then build a small layout you can edit, save and restore.

Rainmeter itself is free and open source. Third-party skins and plugins vary in quality and may include scripts, fonts, network requests or additional software, so use reputable creators and inspect packages before installing them.

What Rainmeter is—and is not

Rainmeter is a Windows-only desktop customization tool. Each skin is an independent widget or widget group, normally defined by one or more text-based .ini files in its own folder. A skin can be loaded, moved, resized, refreshed, edited, hidden or unloaded without changing other skins. The official skins documentation describes skins as movable, dynamic and sometimes interactive windows.

Rainmeter does not automatically replace the Windows taskbar, Start menu, File Explorer, system icons or wallpaper. A complete “desktop theme” may also need a wallpaper, icon pack, launcher, taskbar utility, fonts or other Windows customization software.

wacuaao 24 Inch Monitor Backlight - Reactive LED Strip for PC and Mac - Screen Color and Music Sync Gaming Lights - Software Control Ambient Lighting for Desktop Setup - USB Powered (24 inch)
  • 🔥Behind monitor light with screen sync: The RGB LED strip follows on-screen colors in real time, adding responsive ambient lighting behind the display for PC gaming, movies, streaming and desktop setups without a camera.
  • 🌈🎵Music sync and lighting modes: Use Skydimo to switch between music rhythm, static colors for bias lighting and dynamic RGB effects, giving your monitor LED lights flexible options for gaming, entertainment or everyday desk ambiance.
  • 🌈Compatibility first: Screen sync is software-driven and requires a Windows or Mac computer running Skydimo. It does not screen-sync directly from a standalone game console or Smart TV, and no physical remote is included.
  • 🔧Guided PC/Mac setup: Connect the light to a computer USB 3.0 port or powered USB hub, install Software, confirm the device, select your display and enable Screen Sync. On Mac, allow Screen Recording permission and reopen the app.
  • 🖥️Made for 24-inch monitors: Sized for 24-inch displays with peel-and-stick mounting behind the screen. The hidden LED strip keeps the front of your monitor clear while creating a clean ambient wall glow.

What you need before installing

  • A Windows PC and permission to install software.
  • Enough storage for Rainmeter, skin files, optional fonts and plugins.
  • A text editor such as Notepad for basic configuration changes.
  • Optional wallpaper or other visual tools if you want more than widget overlays.

Download the program from the official site or GitHub project, not an unverified mirror. Rainmeter’s repository says the application does not transfer information to other networked systems unless specifically requested by you or the installer; that statement does not certify every third-party skin, plugin, API or package. Copy a skin before making substantial edits, and avoid random “all-in-one” theme bundles.

Install Rainmeter

  1. Open the official Rainmeter site or official releases page and download the current stable Windows installer. Release information can change, so check that page rather than relying on an old version number.
  2. Run the installer and choose Standard installation unless you have a specific reason to use portable mode.
  3. Keep the default installation location in most cases.
  4. Launch Rainmeter and confirm that a sample skin appears.
  5. Open the management window from the notification-area icon or by launching Rainmeter directly.

The documentation history currently identifies Rainmeter 4.5.25 (May 17, 2026), while the GitHub repository identifies 4.5.26 (May 20, 2026). Use the release page for the build that is actually current when you install.

When portable mode makes sense

Portable mode keeps Rainmeter and its configuration together, which can help when you lack administrator access or want to carry a setup between Windows installations. In a normal installation, the default user skin directory is C:Users<YourName>DocumentsRainmeterSkins. In portable mode, skins are under the Rainmeter installation folder. See the installation documentation and skins documentation for the path used by your installation.

Learn the Rainmeter interface

  • Manage: Load, unload, refresh and edit skins, and change their options.
  • Skins tree: Browse installed folders and their .ini files.
  • Layouts: Save and restore a set of active skins and their arrangement.
  • Settings: Configure startup, skin paths, logging, update behavior and application-wide options.
  • Notification-area menu: Quickly reach installed skins and Rainmeter controls.
  • Skin context menu: Right-click a widget to edit, refresh, configure or unload it.

Labels and arrangement can differ slightly between releases, so use the current build’s interface rather than an old screenshot.

Install your first skin

Install an .rmskin package

  1. Download an .rmskin file from a creator you trust.
  2. Double-click it and review the Rainmeter Skin Installer contents and options.
  3. Install the package. It may contain several skins, fonts, plugins or support files.
  4. Open Manage if nothing appears automatically.
  5. Select the relevant .ini file and click Load.

Installing a package does not necessarily produce one visible widget; suites commonly contain multiple variants.

Install a ZIP or manually packaged skin

  1. Extract the archive.
  2. Place the skin’s folder directly under the active Rainmeter Skins directory.
  3. In Manage, choose Refresh all or restart Rainmeter.
  4. Open the new folder in the skins tree, select the intended .ini file and click Load.

A typical structure is:

Rainmeter
└── Skins
    └── ExampleSkin
        ├── ExampleSkin.ini
        ├── Variables.inc
        ├── @Resources
        └── other supporting files

A folder with several .ini files usually contains variants of one skin. Load only the variant you want.

Arrange, control and remove widgets

  1. Load a skin from Manage and drag it to the desired position.
  2. If it will not move, right-click it and enable Draggable. Turn Draggable off after placement.
  3. Enable Keep on screen to prevent accidental placement outside the usable desktop area.
  4. Use Click-through for decorative widgets that should not intercept mouse clicks.
  5. Adjust Z-position when the skin must sit above or below other windows.
  6. For multiple monitors, choose the intended Display monitor or monitor-selection setting.
  7. Use Unload to remove a widget from the current session.

Unload is temporary. Delete removes the skin’s files. Disabling Rainmeter startup prevents the application from launching with Windows but does not uninstall it. Unload a skin before deleting its folder, and close any related installer or editor.

Govee Gaming Light for Monitor G1, RGBIC LED Backlight for 27-34 Inch PC
  • Govee VibraMatch Technology: With Govee's VibraMatch color-matching technology, vivid RGBIC lighting is presented by reading pixel points on the screen when playing games with high scene-changing speed and vibrant colors.(Note: Some streaming media content has copyright protection, and the content of the screen cannot be selected)
  • Enhanced RGBIC Lighting: High-density LED gaming light beads make a more even distribution of the lights to create exquisite lighting effects. Divide and filter the RGB values to highlight game elements such as explosions and lightning.
  • Non-Divisive Atmosphere: With Govee PC DreamView Technology, you can achieve intelligent synchronization with at least 10 Govee gaming LED light products and create an all-encompassing lighting experience. The lights are also compatible with Razer Chroma.
  • Personalization Settings via App: With 123 preset scene modes and 11 music modes, users can freely select the lighting effects suitable for different scenes and moods, creating more focused lighting effects and making their gaming world more dynamic.
  • 360° 4-sided Color Matching: The length of the gaming strip light fits perfectly on all four sides of the screen, fully capturing color changes on the screen for an all-around presentation of color effects, creating more realistic visual experiences.

Customize a skin safely

  1. Right-click the widget and choose Edit skin.
  2. Copy the .ini file, or the entire skin folder, as a backup.
  3. Change one or two settings at a time, then save.
  4. Right-click the widget and choose Refresh skin.
  5. If it fails, undo the last change or restore the backup.

Common settings include:

FontSize=18
FontColor=255,255,255,255
X=20
Y=20
Update=1000
  • X and Y commonly control placement.
  • FontSize and FontColor commonly affect text meters.
  • Update=1000 commonly requests a one-second interval, although measures and skin logic can alter effective behavior.

Do not assume every skin uses these names. Shared values may be in Variables.inc or another file under @Resources, and a dynamic setting can override the visible value. References: variables, meters and measures.

How Rainmeter skins work

Measures

Measures retrieve or calculate values such as CPU usage, memory, disk space, network traffic, time, feeds, audio information or plugin data.

Meters

Meters display or use those values. String, image, bar, histogram, shape and interactive meters are common types.

Variables

Variables let a skin reuse values such as fonts, colors, scale factors, image paths and coordinates.

Bangs

Bangs are commands beginning with !. They can refresh skins, activate configurations, load layouts or execute programs. For example:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
LeftMouseUpAction=[!Refresh]

LeftMouseUpAction=[!DeactivateConfig]

LeftMouseUpAction=[!ActivateConfig "FolderName" "SkinName.ini"]

LeftMouseUpAction=[!LoadLayout "MyLayout"]

Syntax is context-dependent; verify commands against the bangs reference and the specific skin. The broader architecture is documented in the Rainmeter manual.

Build a useful, maintainable layout

Start with three or four purposeful skins rather than an entire suite:

Fiotura Monitor LED Backlights for PC & Mac, RGBIC LED Strip Lights that Sync with Screen Color or Music, Computer Light Bar Behind Monitor, LEDs for Desk Gaming, USB Port, Software Control (24 in)
  • Screen Sync Technology: The G100 monitor backlight captures the screen color accurately for an immersive lighting experience that gives you a cool ambiance while gaming (Not compatible with some copyrighted streaming content)
  • Music Sync Mode: The G100 has a music sync mode that allows the lights to pulsate with the music
  • Easy Installation Process: G100 is suitable for 24-32 inch computer screens, after downloading the software (PC or Mac), plug the USB port of the light strip into your computer case, the computer will automatically recognize your light strip
  • Software Control Capability: With our control software, you can use all our screen synchronized fixtures, and you can set different lighting modes to create a better neon effect
  • System Compatibility Requirements: The light strip only supports PC or Mac, the light sync function needs to be used with Skydimo software
  1. A clock or date display.
  2. A CPU, memory or storage monitor.
  3. A launcher or productivity widget.
  4. Weather or media controls only when the skin and its service are maintained.

This approach keeps the desktop readable and makes troubleshooting easier. Web-connected weather and feed skins can fail when APIs change, keys expire or the network is unavailable.

Save layouts and enable startup

  1. Load and arrange the skins you want.
  2. Open Manage and go to Layouts.
  3. Save the current configuration with a descriptive name.
  4. Optionally include the wallpaper and unload skins that should not belong to that layout.
  5. Restore it later from the same interface.

A layout records Rainmeter’s active configurations and arrangement. It is not a complete backup of skin files, plugins, fonts, wallpapers, external applications or API credentials. Save a copy of those dependencies separately before reinstalling Windows or changing monitors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Rainmeter’s built-in startup option in Settings, then sign out or restart Windows to verify it. A skin loading late may be waiting for a plugin, companion application or network service. Do not add a Startup-folder shortcut or Task Scheduler entry unless the built-in option fails; duplicate methods can launch Rainmeter twice or restore conflicting layouts.

Multiple monitors and high-DPI displays

Place each skin on its intended monitor and test the layout after changing monitor order, primary-display status or Windows scaling. Coordinates can shift when displays change, and a design made for 1080p may need scaling on 4K or ultrawide screens. Monitor-aware variables and screen-selection settings can help, but a portable layout may still need manual adjustment. See built-in monitor variables and skin settings.

Performance and privacy

Simple clocks, text and system monitors are typically lightweight. Animated visualizers, rapid updates, large images, scripts, web requests and third-party plugins can increase CPU, memory, GPU or network use. Raise update intervals for information that does not need second-by-second refreshes, unload unused skins and test while gaming or using full-screen applications instead of assuming there will be no impact.

Measures and plugins can gather system or internet data, so inspect what a skin requires. A weather or feed skin may contact an external service, require an API key or stop working when an endpoint changes. Rainmeter’s own privacy statement applies to Rainmeter itself, not automatically to those services.

Troubleshoot common problems

The skin does not appear

  • Confirm Rainmeter is running and the package is in the active skin path.
  • In Manage, select the correct .ini and click Load.
  • Refresh Rainmeter after manually copying files.
  • Check that the skin is not off-screen, behind another window or hidden by an unexpected transparency setting.
  • Read the error log for configuration problems.

Red error text or “measure not found”

Common causes include a missing or incompatible plugin, an incorrect path or variable, an older skin, a missing companion application, or a changed web endpoint. Read the log and the skin creator’s documentation before reinstalling the entire suite.

  • 【Tip】: The light strip only supports PC or Mac , the light sync function needs to be used with "SyncLight" software.

Weather, music or web data is broken

The service may have changed its API, require a key, need a browser extension or companion application, be unavailable, or be blocked by a firewall. Choose a maintained skin and follow its current setup instructions.

The skin is stuck or cannot be moved

Re-enable Draggable, turn off Click-through, move it with Manage, unload it, or close conflicting overlays. Keep it inside the work area.

The layout is wrong after startup

Check monitor arrangement, Windows scaling, deleted skins, missing fonts or plugins, and duplicate startup methods. A layout can reference a configuration that is no longer installed.

Win+D leaves skins visible

The official history records a Windows 11 24H2-or-later fix in Rainmeter 4.5.25 for skins remaining visible after Show Desktop. Update from the official release page before trying obscure workarounds; behavior depends on the exact Rainmeter build and Windows version. See version history.

Reset a problematic skin

  1. Unload it.
  2. Open it again from Manage.
  3. Restore the original .ini or variables file from your backup.
  4. Remove only documented user configuration files if necessary.
  5. Test without optional plugins.
  6. Delete the skin package only if it continues to fail.
  7. Restart Rainmeter after correcting the configuration.

Do not delete the entire Rainmeter configuration folder as a first step; that can remove layouts and custom settings.

When Rainmeter is—or is not—the right tool

Choice Advantage Cost or limitation
Prebuilt skin Fastest route to a finished desktop Quality, compatibility and maintenance vary
Edit an existing skin Easier than building from scratch Requires understanding its variables and structure
Build your own skin Maximum control Requires learning Rainmeter syntax
Many skins More functionality More clutter, updates and possible resource use
Web-connected skins Live weather, feeds and services APIs can break or require keys
Saved layout Easy switching between arrangements Does not package every external dependency

Rainmeter is a good fit for persistent widgets, system monitoring, configurable clocks and text-file customization. It is a poor fit for a one-click theme that changes Windows UI, a cross-platform solution, or animated wallpaper as the primary feature.

Alternatives by goal

  • Animated wallpaper: Wallpaper Engine is a paid option, with regional pricing shown on its store page. Lively Wallpaper is a free/open-source project for animated wallpapers.
  • Multi-monitor and window management: DisplayFusion focuses on taskbars, window rules and monitor workflows rather than widget skins.
  • Simplicity: Windows personalization and built-in widgets are more integrated but less configurable.
  • Linux: Conky is a comparable customization tool for Linux, not Windows.

Finish with a small layout, save it, keep backups of the skin folders and dependencies, and use each creator’s support documentation when a plugin or online service fails.
