Pin and unpin apps for a cleaner Start menu
One of the quickest wins is trimming the Start menu so it only shows what you actually use. To pin something, find it in the Start menu list (or search), right-click the app, and choose Pin to Start. To remove clutter, right-click an app tile you don’t need and select Unpin from Start.
For apps you use frequently, keeping them pinned makes everything feel faster—especially if you’re trying to reduce how often you need to search.

Resize and rearrange the Start menu layout
The Start menu tiles can be more than just “there.” You can move them into a layout that matches how you think—work apps together, entertainment together, or whatever keeps your flow smooth.
- Move tiles: Click and drag tiles to rearrange them.
- Resize tiles (where available): Right-click a tile, then choose Resize.
- Create a “home base”: Put your top 4–8 apps near the top so they’re always within thumb reach.
Yes, it’s small stuff—but when you customize the layout, the Start menu stops feeling like a generic launcher and starts feeling like yours.

Turn Start menu suggestions on or off
Windows sometimes shows “suggested” content and recommendations in the Start menu. If you prefer a calmer experience, you can dial that back.
Go to Settings > Personalization > Start. Look for options related to suggestions, recommendations, and recent activity, then switch them off if you’d rather keep things focused.
This is especially helpful if you want the Start menu to be purely functional—apps and shortcuts—without extra distractions.
Customize the taskbar behavior
Now let’s talk taskbar customization—the part of Windows you’ll look at all day. Start by tuning how it behaves so it fits your workflow instead of the other way around.
Pin the apps you use every day
Pinning is the fastest way to personalize the taskbar. Open Start, find an app, right-click it, and choose Pin to taskbar. If you later change your mind, right-click the taskbar icon and select Unpin from taskbar.
Adjust taskbar alignment
If you prefer the taskbar icons on the left (like older Windows versions), you can switch the alignment.

By default, Windows may combine icons and labels based on your taskbar settings. If you want text labels for clarity, this is where you can change it.
In Settings > Personalization > Taskbar, look for options related to combining taskbar buttons and labels. Choose a layout style that makes the taskbar easier to scan.
Use system tray settings to clean up your notification area
If you hate hunting for which icons are active, you’ll like this. You can control what shows up in the system tray and reduce the number of constantly blinking or cluttered icons.
Go to Settings > Personalization > Taskbar, then find the section for notification area and icons. From there, you can show/hide icons and control which apps can display notifications.

Make the taskbar more useful with keyboard and shortcuts
Even with perfect customization, the biggest “power upgrade” comes from shortcuts. Windows 11 rewards speed.
- Win + number: Launch or switch to the app pinned at that position on the taskbar.
- Win + T: Cycle through taskbar icons.
- Win + B: Focus the system tray area.
If you use these even occasionally, you’ll start feeling the difference immediately.
Final Thoughts: Customize for you, not for “perfect”
Customizing the Windows 11 Start menu and taskbar isn’t about making everything look flashy—it’s about reducing friction. When your pinned apps match your routines and your notifications are controlled, Windows stops feeling like a default setup and starts feeling like a tool that fits.

Bottom Line

Pin wisely, keep suggestions under control, and trim the notification noise. Once those pieces are in place, your daily workflow will feel noticeably smoother.
